Abstract

This study examines the strategic determinants of MSME sustainability in East Java by investigating the effects of credit facilities, digital marketing, innovation strategy, pricing strategy, distribution strategy, circular economy, and inclusive partnerships. Market competition is positioned as a mediating variable, while institutional regulation acts as a moderating variable. A quantitative explanatory research design was employed using survey data collected from 396 MSMEs selected through simple random sampling across East Java. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings reveal that credit facilities, digital marketing, innovation strategy, pricing strategy, distribution strategy, circular economy practices, and inclusive partnerships significantly influence MSME sustainability. Market competition mediates the relationship between strategic factors and sustainability, indicating that competitive dynamics enhance the effectiveness of internal business strategies. Institutional regulation also moderates the relationship between market competition and sustainability by supporting a fair and conducive business environment. These findings demonstrate that MSME sustainability is determined by the interaction of strategic capabilities, competitive market conditions, and supportive institutional frameworks.

Abstract

This study examines the effects of Digital Financial Inclusion, QRIS Utilization, and Embedded Finance Adoption on Retail MSME Scalability through Customer Engagement. The increasing adoption of digital financial services has created new opportunities for retail micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to improve business performance and expand market reach. However, empirical evidence regarding how different dimensions of digital finance contribute to business scalability remains limited, particularly in emerging economies. This study employs a quantitative approach using primary data collected from 250 retail MSME owners who have adopted digital financial services. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that Digital Financial Inclusion, QRIS Utilization, and Embedded Finance Adoption significantly influence Customer Engagement. Digital Financial Inclusion and Embedded Finance Adoption also have significant positive effects on Retail MSME Scalability. Customer Engagement demonstrates the strongest direct effect on scalability. In contrast, QRIS Utilization does not have a significant direct effect on Retail MSME Scalability. These findings suggest that digital payment technology alone is insufficient to drive business growth unless it contributes to stronger customer relationships. The study highlights the strategic role of Customer Engagement in translating digital financial transformation into sustainable business expansion. The results contribute to the growing literature on digital finance and MSME development by providing evidence that customer-centered digital financial strategies are essential for improving scalability in the retail sector.

Abstract

Climate change and economic pressures pose challenges to the business sustainability of micro-traders, primarily due to erratic weather patterns, rising raw material costs, and declining public purchasing power. These conditions cause fluctuations in the income of micro-traders in Kembangbahu District, Lamongan Regency, necessitating an examination of the influencing factors. This study aims to describe the income dynamics of micro-traders, analyze the impact of climate change and economic pressures on income, and identify the adaptation strategies employed by traders to sustain their businesses. The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving micro-traders as key informants, and subsequently validated using source and technique triangulation. The results indicate that micro-traders' income fluctuates, influenced by climate change, which leads to a reduction in the number of consumers and disruptions in the distribution of goods. Furthermore, economic pressures manifesting as rising raw material prices, increased operational costs, and declining public purchasing power further reduce traders' profits. To sustain their businesses, traders implement various adaptation strategies, such as adjusting operating hours, diversifying products, cutting operational costs, and utilizing social media for marketing. The study concludes that climate change and economic pressures significantly impact the income dynamics of micro-traders. Therefore, government support is required through business capacity building, access to capital, and business digitalization. Future research is encouraged to expand the study area to obtain more comprehensive results.

Abstract

The existence of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), particularly in the coffee shop sector, is significantly influenced by customer satisfaction levels. This research aims to analyze the influence of employee communication competence and price on customer satisfaction, with service quality as a mediating variable at Warung Kopi Sekar Jagad in Tuban Regency. The study adopts a quantitative associative methodology. Data are collected through structured questionnaires distributed to customers using accidental sampling techniques. The data analysis is performed using Path Analysis to examine both direct and indirect effects within the research model. The findings indicate that employee communication competence and price significantly influence service quality. Furthermore, service quality has a significant impact on customer satisfaction and serves as a vital mediator that links communication competence and price to overall satisfaction levels. In conclusion, to enhance customer satisfaction, SMEs must prioritize improving communication skills among staff and maintaining competitive pricing policies, both of which are manifested through superior service quality.

This Community Service Program (KKN) aimed to empower the residents of Sumberagung Village, Modo District, Lamongan Regency, by transforming plastic waste into economically valuable paving blocks through a circular economy approach. The initiative involved 38 participants, including village officials, youth organization members, and local residents. The methods employed included awareness-raising sessions, training, demonstrations of paving block production, and ongoing guidance. The program's innovation lies in integrating circular economy concepts with the processing of plastic waste into simple construction products that offer both utility and economic value. Evaluation results indicated significant improvements in participant knowledge: understanding of the circular economy rose from 45.6% to 86.3%, knowledge of paving block production increased from 32.5% to 89.1%, and awareness of the economic potential of waste grew from 48.2% to 87.6%. The program also produced plastic-waste-based paving blocks, serving as a practical example of circular economy implementation at the community level. These activities demonstrate that converting plastic waste into paving blocks offers a viable waste management alternative that supports the reduction of environmental pollution while simultaneously creating sustainable economic opportunities for the community. Keywords: Circular economy; Community empowerment; Plastic waste; Paving blocks.

Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a critical role in economic growth and job creation, yet achieving long-term sustainability remains challenging in increasingly competitive business environments. Drawing on the Resource-Based View and Institutional Theory, this study examines the effects of digital marketing, circular economy practices, credit facilities, inclusive partnerships, distribution strategy, pricing strategy, and innovation strategy on business competition and MSME sustainability, with business competition as a mediating variable and institutional regulation as a moderating variable. A quantitative research design using a survey was employed to collect data from 250 MSME owners and managers in East Java, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicate that circular economy practices, distribution strategy, and pricing strategy significantly affect business competition. Circular economy practices, inclusive partnerships, pricing strategy, and institutional regulation have significant positive effects on MSME sustainability. Business competition has a significant negative effect on MSME sustainability, suggesting that intense competitive pressure may weaken long-term business performance. In contrast, digital marketing, credit facilities, and innovation strategy have no significant effects on either business competition or MSME sustainability, while the moderating effect of institutional regulation on the relationship between business competition and MSME sustainability is not significant. Business competition also does not significantly mediate the relationships between the predictor variables and MSME sustainability. Practically, the findings suggest that MSME managers should prioritize circular economy practices, inclusive partnerships, and effective pricing strategies, while policymakers should strengthen institutional support mechanisms that directly enhance MSME sustainability.
