Abstract

The lack of vocabulary mastery often becomes an obstacle in writing, whereas vocabulary determines how skilled a person is in language. It is also supported by qualified grammatical skills so that the writing is directed and by existing rules, producing readable and coherent writing content. This study aims to describe pupils' essay writing skills and the link between grammar competence and vocabulary mastery. The study is ex post facto. The sample in this study is 104. The research data were obtained through three instruments: an essay text, a grammar mastery test, and a vocabulary mastery test. The data analysis technique used is product-moment correlation and multiple regression. Mastery of vocabulary and grammar together has a considerable impact on English Education students' essay writing skills; grammar competence considerably impacts English Education students' essay writing abilities; and vocabulary knowledge substantially impacts English Education students' essay writing abilities. It implies that mastery of vocabulary and grammar significantly impacts students' essay-writing abilities at Universitas Islam Lamongan.

Abstract

This research was conducted on Tenth Grade students at a vocational high school in Lamongan, this study aims to describe, explain the form of code mixing and code switching that occurs in learning, find out the factors and reasons teachers use code mixing and code switching in learning English in Tenth Grade . The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative using a sociolinguistic approach. Data collection techniques research results in the form of data collection obtained by means of observation and open interviews at the time of the study. The results showed that code-switching and code-mixing in learning English in one of the vocational high schools in Lamongan City found a form of code mixing and code switching that occurred in learning in Tenth Grade , in total only two types of code mixing were found. The factors causing code-switching include: the speech of the interlocutor, the third presence, the subject (topic), to evoke a sense of humor. Factors causing code mixing include: wanting to explain something, because of the situation, wanting to establish intimacy between teachers and students. The impacts of code switching and code mixing include: positive impacts, namely students are easier to understand the subject matter presented by the teacher, negative impacts of the Indonesian language order resulting from interference and integration, as well as code switching and code mixing. the use of Indonesian is not done properly and correctly so that in learning the situation becomes informal. This research is expected to provide knowledge and become a reference for further research with different references.Key Words: Sociolinguistic, Code Mixing, Code Switching

Abstract

Language is very important in our life, because without language we cannot communicate with each other. In communication, language has an important role because with a language we can express what is on our mind. In this case, learning speech act theory becomes important to overcome this problem. Speech acts are actions that can be done through speech. The purpose of this study was to determine the types of speech acts performed by the main character and to determine the function of the speech acts performed by the main character in Luca's film through the script. speech acts are divided into three acts; locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. In this study, illocutionary acts are the most important speech acts and are related to what the speaker meant. The illocutionary acts are divided into five illocutionary speech acts; representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. In this study, the researcher found all illocutionary acts performed by the main character in Film luca through the script. And the illocutionary acts used by the main character in Luca's film through the script, the researchers found 113; 27 representative, 45 directive, 4 commissive, 34 expressive, and 3 declarative. The most common illocutionary act is the directive illocutionary act, which is often done by the main character in Luca's film through the script. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method in the form of documents in the form of films and scripts to describe and analyze the speech acts selected in the script, then classify them according to the concept of John R. Searle's illocutionary acts. In this study, the researcher found that Luca performed all illocutionary acts: representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative.Keywords: Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts, Luca Film Script

Abstract

This study was conducted to observe the phenomenon of language that creates humor in Stand up Comedy. The researcher aims to analyze the maxims that are violated to create humor, describe and explain the forms of humor that are created through the violation of the maxims, and explain the function of the humor created through the violation of the maxims in Stand up. Comedy Raditya Dika (SCURD). This research was conducted using mixed methods, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. This data source is in the form of Stand up Comedy Raditya Dika in a Youtube video. The researcher is the main instrument of this research, while the data sheet is used as a secondary instrument. After being collected, the data were categorized and analyzed based on the types of violation of maxims, forms of humor, and functions of humor. To increase confidence, the data were triangulated by linguistic experts and students interested in the field.Keywords: pragmatics, humor, maxim flouting, Stand up Comedy.

Abstract

Language is foremost a means of communication used by people to convey their ideas and feelings to others when they talk directly or indirectly. Current phenomenon is common in society the code switching used by individuals who live in a bilingual or multilingual community in which the code switching can occur. The researcher chooses one of Malinau students in Lamongan. Her name is "Siti Bakhiatus Sholikhah" Faculty of Fisheries, Lamongan Islamic University, on eighth semester.The purpose of this study is to find out the types of code switching and find out the functions of code switching used by Malinau Student in Lamongan. This study examines the types of code switching that occurred during the conversations used by Malinau Students in Lamongan. The research design of this study is using qualitative descriptive method. The collection technique of the data is from of recording and chatting in social media : like a WhatsApp and Facebook from “Lika’s” talks. The data analysis techniques used found that are preparing, reading and undesrtanding, coding and classifying, interpreting and drawing te conclusion. From this data found the types and functions of code switching are analyzed by using the theory of Poplack’s and Apple and Muysken. From the results of analysis, three types of code switching (tag switching, inter-sentential switching and intra-sentential switching) and four functions of code switching are (referential function of code switching, directive function of code switching, expressive function of code switching and metalinguistic function of code switching).

Abstract

This research aims to discover the responses of student in Lamongan folklore character education values. The folklore is the title Panji Laras Liris and Mbok Rondo Barang Danureksa, which was famous as the Lamongan legendries for a banning marriages between men from Lamongan and women from Kediri and prohibition for eating catfish. Most of in several Lamongan part is belief about this folklore. This research employed descriptive qualitative research methods, using data collection technique are observed the student in reader respons after read the folklore, and choose from ten students in C class in 9th at one of the Junior High Schools in Turi. Based on the results from interviews and reader responses, several factors impact the reader's manifestation of social function after reading literary works, including the knowledge of literature, reading experience, and individual attitudes toward daily life to face the milenials era.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies used by English Study Program student. The student is first semester in study process. In completing this research, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method and the theory of Brown and Levinson. From this study, the researcher found four kinds of politeness strategies used by the English Study Program student, those are bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and Off-record. The factors influence the politeness strategy used by the main ss are the payoffs and social variables. Furthermore, sociological variables also affect the use of politeness strategies used by students, which are social distance, relative power and rank of imposition.

Abstract

This article looks critically the comparison between English and French Gender. The problem that will be discussed in this article is: What kind of similarities and differences do they have in gender, especially in distinguishing male from female persons? The significance of the study are to get inputs on gender in English and French in order to improve their ability in understanding gender from both languages . One of the characteristics of Indo-European language is gender, which classifies nouns to express sex distinctions. The following discussion will deal with two forms of gender, natural and grammatical gender, and the ways of showing gender. From the linguistics analysis of English and French gender that has been done in this article and the comparison between them, it can be concluded that both languages have some differences and similarities in the application of gender. The differences are focused on the kinds of gender used, English uses natural gender while French uses grammatical gender. The use of grammatical gender makes French does not have neuter gender. So the inanimate objects are considered to have gender, masculine or feminine, and the ways of showing their gender are afforded by the use of article, le for masculine and la for feminine.

Abstract

Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan literasi siswa melalui integrasi teknologi dalam pendidikan, dengan fokus pada penggunaan media digital reading. Berdasarkan data UNESCO yang menunjukkan rendahnya minat baca di Indonesia, program ini dilaksanakan di SMP Mambaul Ulum Mayong, Lamongan. Metode yang digunakan mencakup pelatihan interaktif menggunakan platform Kahoot, e-book, jurnal online, dan artikel digital. Selama pelatihan, siswa diberikan materi mengenai cara mengakses dan memahami teks digital, serta strategi membaca yang efektif. Hasil dari pre-test dan post-test menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan sebesar 25% dalam kemampuan literasi siswa. Selain itu, guru-guru dilibatkan dalam pelatihan untuk mendukung siswa dalam menggunakan teknologi digital. Evaluasi melalui kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa siswa merasa lebih percaya diri dalam membaca teks digital dan guru-guru berkomitmen untuk mengintegrasikan media digital dalam proses pembelajaran. Pengabdian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penggunaan teknologi digital secara efektif dapat meningkatkan kemampuan literasi siswa dan memberikan dampak positif bagi kualitas pendidikan..
