Abstract

Abstract: Four novelettes of Yoshimoto’s, which are Kitchen (1988), Moonlight Shadow (1988), Hardboiled (2001), and Hard Luck (2001) bring death and sense of loss in the beginning of the narrative. The death and sense of loss give new probabilities as parts of the queer identity constructions, for instance the death as the partition of the heterosexual matrix, the loss feelings as a gender identity alteration, agree to accept foreigners as members of the family, the relationship tend to be incest, female homosexuality, transgenderism, and change the family members role. This study conducted to analyze the way of death and loss feelings give probabilities of queer identity in the Yoshimoto’s narration. As for seeing theshape ofqueeridentity, The research applies Butler’s thinking on gender performativity to analyze how ambiguous sexual and gender identities are presented. The research finds that the probabilityof deathcanopen upleads toqueeridentity and  the analysis of queer identity’s performativity on character’s performativity in the novelettes renders it possible for sexual and gender construction to be constantly changing and everlastingly displaced performances.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the depiction of formation of the new identity of immigrant characters in four short stories written by two immigrant authors in contemporary German literature, Wladimir Kaminer and Dilek Güng?r. This study discusses how the immigrant characters build their new identities and their self-subjectivities in four short stories, namely ?Schlechte Vorbilder?, ?Deutsch-russisch Kulturjahr?,  "Geld oder Leben? and ?Blondes Barbie?. This study applies Hall?s (1990) identity theory and Bhabha?s (1994) hybridity theory. This study uses the qualitative approach with the descriptive-analytics method. The result of this study argues that the identity formation of immigrant characters is performed by imitating other cultures and presenting the past memory of the immigrant characters in their present lives as an effort to liberate the immigrant characters from their otherness and to build their self-subjectivities. In addition, the depiction of formation of the immigrant characters? new identities also shows that identity is a fluid concept, and a means of rejection of the two immigrant authors towards the essentialism concept of identity.

Abstract

Negotiation Discourse of Femininity Through Disney Princesses’ Movies. Femininity tends to be explained as a condition ‘to be a woman’, making it an ideology that gives limitations to women. Mills uses discourse theory to explain femininity, stating femininity is a process that is constructed and negotiated in every interaction. Disney Princesses show changes through times and each animation film, showing a negotiation of what defines femininity. The data collection was carried out by qualitative method narrative study, with Performativity of Gender by Judith Butler and Negotiation Discourse of Femininity theory by Sara Mills. Thirteen Disney Princesses were used as researched objects to show the slow changing of femininity. The results of this study show a change in Disney Princesses, through long negotiations based on the wave of feminism that occurred with the Disney Princess characters featured. Indications have shown through the Disney Princess characters who initially showed only stereotypes of feminine elements—such as being passive, gentle, not leaving their safe zone, becoming a Disney Princess who also showed stereotypical masculinity elements— such as being physically active, not easily afraid to discover new things, and showing bravery. This slow shift does not change the identity of Disney Princesses as a princess and as a woman.

Abstract

By applying the mixed research methods combining new historicism and digital humanities with AntConc-assisted distant reading techniques, this research aims to explore a reconstruction of Jakarta's history offered in From Batavia to Jakarta (1619–1999), a collection of poems by Zeffry J. Alkatiri. Results show that history can be reconstructed through the physical structure of narrative poetry represented by the dominant usage of pronoun "they" and intra-sentence conjunctions and prepositions such as "and", "in", and "the" instead of licentia poetica which can violate language rules. However, in the structural analysis, AntConc was not able to detect several linguistic aspects such as typography, figures of speech, metaphors, hyperboles, and personifications in several subchapters, so manual analysis was still required. Results show that the reconstruction of Jakarta’s history by Alkatiri revolves around four main themes, i.e. violence, the struggle against colonialism, Betawi and peranakan cultures, and Jakarta as a city, each of which is imbued with issues pertaining to identity, such as race, class, and urban lifestyle. This reconstruction also features the words "child" and "person" as markers of certain identities.

Abstract

In the early 20th century circa 1914–1940 were Sundanese novels almost "silent" from the colonialism narratives. This condition shows that memories were forgotten, suppressed, ignored, or even omitted in literary works because of the domination of the Dutch East Indies. However, the colonial traces can be revealed through how the narratives are constructed and presented. Through their works, the authors (from the middle class and educated) told about social reality and themselves in the challenges of social change in the early 20th century. This paper aims to reveal the memory selection process of Sundanese novelists in the early 20th century in producing their works under the dominant forces influences: feudal and colonial. The data analysis techniques were as follows, (a) data instrumens: narrative tools, special expressions, projection, and contruction (b) describing the data instrumens, (c) interpreting the data, (d) conclusions. The analysis results are: (1) the authors positioning (as teachers, natives, and employees of the Balai Pustaka) had an affects on the memories selections that were used to constructing narratives about domination and power, (2) the narratives of colonialism memories in five novels are built in three ways: suppressed, diverted, and even erased, (3) The voices behind the colonialism-narratives silent are expressed through the metaphorical traces of power, the pre-colonial and colonial memories as background, and indigenous marginal discourse.

Abstract

Homeira Qaderi’s memoir, Dancing in the Mosque (2020), portrays how cultural norms construct gender expectations and perpetuate stereotypes. Using a dual narrative structure that intertwines Shah Pesar’s magical adventures with Qaderi’s poignant reflections illustrates how Qaderi skillfully employs focalization to shed light on the cultural limitations imposed on Afghan women, blending realistic storytelling elements. This study utilizes Bal’s theory of focalization alongside Genette’s concept of zero focalization to analyze the narrative shift from an omniscient narrator to a first-person perspective. By applying these theories, we examine how the shift in perspective highlights emotional intricacies and sharp feminist critique, while also revealing the narrative control and the lens through which the characters’ experiences are portrayed. We investigate the marginalization of women through the issues of constrained mobility, loss of identity, and legal disenfranchisement. By centering on Qaderi’s perspective, the text critiques societal and legal structures that diminish women’s value while foregrounding their struggle for agency and self-definition in a patriarchal society. This study underscores the broader ramifications of gender narratives in Afghanistan, highlighting the resilience of women as they resist cultural suppression.

Abstract

Tahta untuk Rakyat Throne for the People, which is the principle that the highly respected Hamengkubuwono IX lived by as a democratic and nationalist King of Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, embodies the concept of the people, by the people, for the people. Under his rule, Kesultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Yogyakarta Sultanate in Indonesia) was committed to placing the people first. Nevertheless, the book Menanam adalah Melawan, or Planting is Resisting, challenges the very principle and questions the commitment of the present-day sultanate. The article explores the activist book, which contains the notes of an activist farmer who reflected on and wrote about his journeys and experiences as a farmer-turned-activist after the village where he farmed was claimed by the authorities, including the sultanate, and was planned to be made into a mining site. Faircloughs sociocultural linguistics frames the analysis, and more specifically through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The results indicate that at the micro level, Widodos writing uses emotive and technical language to construct a collective identity of marginalized farmers, opposing powerful entities like the sultanate and corporations. At the meso-level, the text challenges dominant power structures and neoliberal policies, advocating for social justice and a responsive monarchy, while emphasizing the need for transparency and genuine community partnership. The article indicates that the concern about the marginalized should take into account non-mainstream texts such as those produced by the marginalized so that social injustice can be minimized.
