Abstract

Fisheries activities at the Bitung Ocean Fishing Port (PPS) have the potential to cause pollution, particularly due to waste generated by fishing vessels. Waste generated on board is categorized into two types: organic and inorganic waste. Information on waste management aboard fishing vessels based at PPS Bitung is minimal and very limited. The aims is to study waste management aboard these vessels and analyze waste management strategies. The research was conducted from August to November 2024 at PPS Bitung. Data were collected using survey methods and interviews with respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using survey methods and interviews with respondents selected by purposive sampling. Data analysis used descriptive methods with a qualitative approach, and waste management strategies were analysed using SWOT analysis. The results showed that the categories of waste generated by fishing vessels include wet waste (food), which is directly dumped into the sea, and dry waste such as plastic, bottles, cloth, glass, and metal, which are collected first. Dry waste management is carried out in two ways, namely without sorting and with sorting. The waste management strategy on board fishing vessels in PPS Bitung is designed to increase environmental awareness and waste management efficiency through an integrated approach. The combination of education, regulation and partnership provides a comprehensive solution to minimize the environmental impact of waste and increase the active participation of crew members in waste management. Consistent implementation of this strategy can serve as a model for sustainable waste management in the fisheries sector.

Abstract

Light fishing are an essential piece of equipment for purse seine operations because they increase catch efficiency by drawing schooling fish with their phototaxis response. Nonetheless, variations in light design and operation significantly affect fishing productivity. The purpose of this study was to examine the fishing lights' operational efficiency and construction features on the KM. Mutiara Sejati purse seine vessel that operates at the Bajomulyo Fishing Port in Central Java. Data was collected through organized interviews with the captain and crew, technical measurements of the lighting system, and direct field observations during ten fishing expeditions. According to the findings, the ship used a multi-light system with 40 units: 16 funnel lamps (corong), 16 galaxy lamps, 8 LED lamps, and 1 raft light. Before the net was deployed, illumination was progressively reduced using galaxy lamps, LED lamps, and finally funnel lamps to optimize fish aggregation. Fish were located using fish finders, and they were concentrated using raft light. According to the study, by keeping fish concentration close to the vessel, this sequential light operating strategy increased catch efficiency. These results offer purse seine fishermen useful advice on how to maximize fishing light operations and increase catch productivity. Abstract

Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) is one of the most economically important tuna species in tropical waters, including Indonesia. High levels of tuna exploitation can be minimized through fisheries management that requires stock and biological data.  The purpose of this study was to analyze the size distribution, percentage of fish suitable for capture, and the relationship between length and weight of Albakora (Thunnus alalunga) landed at Benoa Port. The study was conducted from January to April 2024 by taking 200 samples of Albakora (Thunnus alalunga) landed at Benoa Port. The analysis methods used were length distribution, length and weight relationships, and catchable size of Albacore (Thunnus alalunga). The analysis results showed that the frequency distribution of Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) length was highest in the range of 100 cm – 106 cm, with 66 fish. A total of 85% of Albacore (Thunnus alalunga) were in the catchable category, while 15% were in the non-catchable category. Albacore growth is negatively allometric (b<3), meaning that fish length grows faster than weight. The condition of Albacore fisheries in the Indian Ocean is classified as overfishing, thus requiring proper management...
