Additionally, this study employs two theories: the first is from Sigmund Freud and is referred to be the model of the mind; the second is from Kenney and is referred to as the forms of conflict. Following that, this study discovered that conflict between a single man and conflict between men happened mostly in Joe Goldberg's character. Abstract

Machine translation has become one of the important features in social media especially on Instagram. This case study investigates the English-Indonesian translations of sentences as the caption on Instagram, as well as analyses the source-oriented and target-oriented translations shown by the target language structures and styles. The frequency of occurrence is also calculated in order to analyze the different parts of sentences that are translated by applying source-oriented and target-oriented approaches. The data were collected from an Instagram account that has a long caption consisting twenty-nine sentences and also one phrase in English and their translations in Indonesian. The data were classified into the language expressions types and then analyzed based on the source-oriented and target-oriented translation approaches (Toury, 1980, 2012). The results show that there are three types of language expressions, they are common expressions, idiom, and phrasal verbs. In terms of the frequency of occurrence, 62% of all parts of sentences are translated based on the target-oriented approach. It reveals that the TL is good enough for the target readers to understand the messages and meanings of the original language. The common expressions are the most frequent parts of sentences that are translated based on the target-oriented approach. Idiom and phrasal verbs do not represent the analyzed data to draw the conclusion as there are only one idiom and four phrasal verbs out of twenty-six data (19%) found. Keywords: source-oriented, target-oriented, machine translation, English-Indonesian, Instagram caption

Abstract

Many studies found out that peer review can improve students' abilities in writing activities. In conducting peer reviews, students carry out two roles, namely as review providers and receivers. Do these two roles have a positive impact on improving writing skills? To answer this question, this study aims to identify students' perceptions as review providers and receivers on writing activities and to analyze the comparison of the benefits received from the role of review providers and receivers. The data in this study were taken from 50 second semester students who took the intermediate writing course at the English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. The instrument used in the data collection was a questionnaire consisting of 40 closed questions. The obtained data was analyzed descriptive qualitatively. The results of data analysis show that review receivers get greater benefits from peer review activities compared to providers. The benefits of peer review are far greater for receivers, especially in terms of better thesis statement formulation and better grammar used in their essay writing. The benefits of peer review for review providers and receivers in terms of increasing vocabulary are almost the same. However, overall it can be stated that the review provider and receiver gave a positive response to the peer review method in essay writing.

Abstract

It is said that men and women communicate differently, attaching different meanings to the same words. Men speak in concrete words to convey information, while women use artistic license and dramatic vocabulary to express and convey their feelings. Therefore, this research aims to (1) identify men's and women’s language features used by the characters in the Do Revenge movie and (2) examine the factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women. This research applied the theory from Lakoff (1975) about women’s language features and factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women, and Coates (2013) about men’s language. The data source is taken from a movie entitled Do Revenge (2022) directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The researcher got the data from the dialogue of males and females characters. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The technique of data analysis is the descriptive method. The findings show that female characters showed 9 out of 10 women’s language features in total 175. They were lexical hedges or fillers, avoidance of strong swear words, empty adjectives, intensifiers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, hypercorrect grammar, emphatic stress, and super polite forms. On the other side, male characters showed 4 out of 5 men’s language features in total 37. They were minimal responses, the use of swearing and taboo language, commands and directives, and question. The researcher also found that psychology and social status are factors that affect the differences in the language of women and men in the Do Revenge movie.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and identify the fulfillment of basic psychological needs how this fulfillment shapes the types of motivation. The data were taken from the movie Good Will Hunting through the documentation method and note-taking technique. The data analyzed descriptively using qualitative research methods by applying Self-Determination Theory by Ryan and Deci (2017). Informal methods supported by narrative technique were used in presenting the data analyzed. The findings reveal that the fulfillment of the main character basic psychological needs autonomy (asserted through confronting fears and making authentic decisions), competence (realized by reframing challenges as growth opportunities), and relatedness (achieved through bonds of trust and vulnerability with Sean and Skylar) directly shapes his motivational landscape. His motivations transition dynamically from amotivation, characterized by disengagement and self-sabotage when needs are thwarted, through various forms of extrinsic motivation, culminating in intrinsic motivation driven by emotional liberation and self-determination as needs are met. The analysis underscores that psychological need fulfillment is foundational to motivational quality, facilitated by supportive relationships and self-reflection. Keywords: movie, motivation, basic psychological needs, types of motivation

Abstract

Taboo words are deeply shaped by the context of the situation, including the relationships between speakers and listeners, the topic being discussed, the setting, and the function of the conversation. This study focuses on the use of taboo words in Horrible Bosses movies, aiming to identify the types of taboo words used and to analyze their functions in expressing anger, frustration, and joke. The data for this research were collected using the documentation method, which involved note-taking. A checklist instrument was also used to help identify and collect specific dialogue adjacencies. The data analysis method employed in this study is descriptive qualitative. The research questions were addressed by applying the framework of taboo word types and functions proposed by Jay and the context of the situation proposed by Holmes, both of which fall under sociolinguistics theory. The findings show that taboo words are mainly used to express anger or frustration, especially in scenes involving unfair treatment or emotional outbursts. Some types of taboo words, such as epithets, cursing, profanity, slang, and insults or slurs, are closely tied to emotional release and conflict. Meanwhile, obscenity, vulgarity, and taboo appear in both serious and humorous contexts, depending on the context in which the taboo words are delivered. Additionally, scatology appears only in joking scenes. These patterns suggest that while some taboo word types only serve anger or frustration function, others are more flexible. Overall, the context plays a key role in shaping how and why taboo words are used in the movie. Keywords: taboo words, anger, frustration, joke, context of situation
