Abstract

Abstract

E-learning has become a popular tool among 21st-century learners as the importance of lifelong learning has grown. However, most teachers find converting teaching and learning from face-to-face to online learning difficult. Current e-learning theories and practices are neither straightforward nor consistent, implying that this solution is implemented irregularly, arbitrarily, and with various degrees of success. Therefore, this study aims to discuss the Exploring the Learning Design on Learning Management System for Online Learning: A Case Study in Higher Education. This research's specific purposes are to determine how higher education teachers design their courses using LMS in an online teaching context. This research applied a qualitative approach with a case study to explore the implementation of the teaching approaches, methods, or strategies. Using purposive sampling, two lecturers who have been nominated in Online Learning System (SPADA) Award 2021 online were invited to participate as the subjects in this research. The data were gathered through interviews with open-ended questions developed by the researchers in data collection. The findings of this research show that the learning design on LMS basically can be done by stating the learning objectives. The well-defined learning objective plays vital roles since it determines the selection of activity and the learning content. Selecting learning activity, as the next phase, can be done by presenting blend materials such as text, audio, and interactive video. Providing a low-risk exercise after presenting the material is also important since it provides practice opportunities for students. The last phase is assessing the student’s performance. This activity, obviously, aims to evaluate the learning objective. So, the type of assessment, whether summative or formative, should be selected based on the learning objectives. It is important also to note that assessment may go hand-in-hand with its feedback, and the findings show that LMS enables us to apply immediate feedback for the students.

Abstract

Abstract

Language discord is one of problems experienced by Indonesian EFL learners when producing English utterances, and those problems can affect their language attitude towards English. The objectives of this research are to find (1) forms of language discord experienced by EFL learners when producing English utterances, (2) factors causing the language discord, and (3) language attitudes towards English as the effect of the language discord. Employing a qualitative approach, this case study was conducted at a university in South Sulawesi, and purposive sampling technique was used to obtain research participants. Based on certain criteria regarding the samples that were most suitable and considered to produce the desired data, four students from the English education department were selected as research participants. Data collection involved observations and in-depth interviews. The technique of data analysis involved a procedure consisting of data managing, reading and giving a memo, describing, classifying, data interpretation, visualizing, and representing. Findings showed three forms of language discord: naked language discord, disguised language discord, and uncontrolled language discord. From the interview results, three factors that caused language discord were found: high excitement, unpreparedness, and deference. As the effect of the language discord, the EFL learners stated they were more enthusiastic to become proficient English speakers, and they felt trained to memorize English vocabularies.

The research data were collected by using observation and interview. The data obtained were analyzed by using the procedure proposed by Creswell (2013), consisting of data managing, data organizing, giving a memo, describing, classifying, and data interpretation. From the results of data analysis, it was found that (1) the English teacher used 3 form of code switching in teaching-learning activities: inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. (2) The teacher applied the code switching in teaching-learning activities for 5 reasons: for confirming, for motivating, for introducing unfamiliar vocabularies, for explaining the grammar, and for translating. Generlly, the use of code switching by English teacher in teaching-learning activities has positive implication for students in teaching English as a foreign language.
