An ethnolinguistic approach is used because the way Makassarese people speak is shaped by ethnic and customary values. This research applies qualitative research method. Data sources are utterances and field note results obtained from three families with Makassar ethnic background who live in Makassar city. To collect data, the researcher stayed in their homes. The results show that direct prohibition utterances are used more dominantly than indirect prohibition in family conversations in Makassar society. It indicates that the Makassar community tends to prioritize positive politeness, show closeness in relationships, and convey messages clearly and unambiguously. Those directive prohibition utterances contain philosophical values, namely honesty, firmness, clarity, spontaneity, affection, respect, and maintenance of harmonious relationships.

For gaining the deepest data about students’ responses toward the teacher’s humor, the researchers randomly interview 10 from those 29 students. The researchers found that in the online teaching-learning activities, the teacher inserted humorous words that based on the theory were classified into pun fan, joke, innuendo, malapropism, and absurdity. Besides that, the researchers also found new types of humor used by the teacher, which were then named as local humor and plesetan humor. From the interview result, it is found students’ responses towards the teacher’s humor indicate that humor maintains students’ focus in learning activities, stimulates students to solve problems quickly, and keeps students’ self-confidence in online learning.

Abstract

English is often perceived as a difficult and boring subject, which can lead students to become indifferent and unmotivated to learn it. This issue is also prevalent among the students of class III IPS at MA Darussalam Barandasi. On the other hand, spending time on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat is one of their favorite pastimes. These students often spend hours on these platforms daily, with little to no benefit for their studies. A team of lecturers from the English Education Department and students from the KEMAL program at FKIP Universitas Muslim Maros recognized this as a problem that needed a solution. A creative and effective approach was required—one that could combine both interests into a meaningful and beneficial activity. As a result, a service program was developed with the aim of boosting students’ motivation to learn English through the use of social media applications. The outcomes of this initiative were very promising. Students responded positively, with enthusiasm and excitement, to the idea of learning English via social media. They began following several educational accounts, carefully engaging with content related to English learning materials. This content was then studied and practiced effectively. Students also agreed that using social media made English learning sessions more enjoyable, which in turn motivated them to engage with the subject with greater enthusiasm.

Abstract

Teacher competency development is an important aspect in improving the quality of learning. The program of Kemahiran Mengajar Aplikasi Lapangan (KEMAL) is designed to provide hands-on teaching experience for students of Universitas Muslim Maros at MAS Darussalam Maros, South Sulawesi. The aim of this activity is to improve pedagogical competence, creativity in learning methods, and classroom management of students through participatory interactions with supervising teachers, principals, and students. The methods used include field observation, preparation of action plans, teaching practice, intensive mentoring, evaluation, and reflection. The results of this community service show an increase in students’ competence in compiling teaching materials, managing classes, and implementing creative learning strategies that are adaptive to students’ character. The active involvement of the school community encourages the creation of a participatory and conducive learning atmosphere. The implications of this activity show that the integration of field practice with a collaborative and reflective approach is effective in shaping the professionalism of prospective teachers and improving the quality of learning in partner schools. The novelty of this program lies in its sustainable and contextual participatory mentoring model.

Abstract

The level of student learning independence in e-learning-based lectures has not been fully able to improve learning achievement without being supported by adequate learning motivation. This study aims to find the effect of the use of e-learning and learning independence, which is mediated by learning motivation, on learning achievement, in university level. This research is a quantitative study with a survey method, where learning motivation is a mediation variable or intervening, learning independence and the use of e-learning are independent variables, and learning achievement is the dependent variable. Involving 20 students of the English language education study program at Universitas Muslim Maros as research subjects, the researchers used documentation and distributing questionnaires to collect data. The data obtained were analyzed using path analysis using the application of IBM SPSS Statistics 19. This research finds that the use of e-learning has a significant effect on university students’ learning motivation, learning motivation has a significant effect on university students’ learning achievement; and can mediate the use of e-learning in influencing university students’ learning achievement. As an implementation in the development of science, the findings of this study reveal the fact that students’ learning outcomes are influenced by learning motivation, learning independence, and learning media such as e-learning.
