Abstract

Language plays a crucial role not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of the values and character of society. In the context of youth mosque da'wah, the use of polite language is crucial because it influences the effectiveness of conveying religious messages and shaping the morals of listeners. This study aims to examine the application of the principles of polite language in youth mosque da'wah in Karanganyar Regency and efforts to improve it through training activities. The method used was a qualitative approach with observation techniques, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions interactively. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the participants' understanding and practice of polite language after attending the training. Based on the questionnaire results, participants' post-test scores increased compared to the pre-test, indicating the effectiveness of the training in strengthening their understanding of the concept of polite speech. Furthermore, observations of da'wah practices showed positive changes in the use of more polite, structured, and empathetic language. This activity not only improved participants' communication skills but also raised awareness of the importance of language ethics in da'wah. Thus, this language politeness training contributes to the character development of mosque youth, helping them become moral, communicative, and civilized young preachers. It is hoped that similar activities can be developed to a more advanced level in the future to strengthen the application of politeness in religious communication among youth.

Abstract

Writing in English is an essential skill in today’s globalized world. As one of the most widely used international languages, English plays a crucial role in education, business, technology, and communication. The ability to write effectively in English allows individuals to express ideas clearly, share information, and interact with people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The mastery of English grammar remains a significant challenge for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners, particularly in environments where English is not used in everyday communication. This study examines grammatical errors found in written English compositions produced by Indonesian high school students. Using the Error Analysis framework developed by Corder (1967) and expanded by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), this study aims to identify, categorize, and analyze the most common grammatical errors and their possible sources. The data were obtained from thirty narrative essays written by students in their second year of senior high school in Surabaya. The analysis revealed that errors in verb tense, article usage, subject-verb agreement, preposition use, and word order were most frequently encountered. These findings suggest that both interlingual and intralingual factors contribute significantly to the errors produced by EFL learners. The study concludes with pedagogical implications for improving grammar instruction in EFL contexts, especially in Indonesian classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the use of African-American slang in the episode "Dueling Hats" from the comedy sketch Key & Peele, which aired on July 16, 2009. The research aims to understand the function and meaning of slang usage in social communication, particularly as a marker of identity and solidarity within the African-American community. The method used is a qualitative descriptive analysis with Miles and Huberman's (1992) data analysis techniques, involving data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification. The analysis results show that slang in dialogue not only functions as everyday communication tools but also as strong cultural identity symbols. The use of words like "yo," "cuz," and "dog" reflects closeness and solidarity, reducing social and emotional distance between individuals. Slang also enables more efficient and rapid communication. The use of slang in this context creates a special communication code that reinforces a sense of membership and togetherness within the African- American community. This study contributes to understanding the complexity and richness of African-American culture through slang, as well as highlighting the importance of language in forming and maintaining social relationships. The findings are expected to enhance insights in sociolinguistics and media analysis studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes code-switching in some cases of informal classroom conversations among students from diverse regional backgrounds. The linguistic diversity within the campus environment makes code-switching a natural phenomenon that frequently occurs in daily interactions, especially before lectures begin. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using observation and spontaneous conversation recording techniques involving two or more students. Data analysis is conducted using Fishman’s theory, which emphasizes the relationships among language choice, domain, and underlying social functions. The findings indicate that code-switching appears in both internal and external forms, occurring inter-sententially and intra-sententially. In the seven cases examined, code-switching is used to build rapport, reinforce group identity, clarify meaning, and adjust to the situation and interlocutors. Factors influencing the occurrence of code-switching include linguistic diversity within the class, conversational context, language habits, and specific communicative purposes. This study concludes that code-switching is a natural and adaptive communication strategy that plays an important role in maintaining smooth social interactions in a multilingual classroom environment. his research also contributes academically to enriching sociolinguistic studies on language use among students.
