Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate EFL students’ difficulties in writing their thesis. This research used qualitative approach. The English Education Study Program of UNPARI students which still doing a thesis took part in this research as subject of the research. The data were collected by asking the students to fill out the questionnaires and being interviewed afterward. In analyzing data, it was done by checking the students’ answer in the questionnaire, classifying the students’ answers, describing the data and concluding the results. The result showed that there were several internal factors of EFL students’ difficulties in writing a thesis. In internal factors are difficulty in choosing the title of the thesis, feel are not sure (pessimistic), bored or saturated, doubtful or pessimistic, fears or worries, having a health problem or down while working on the thesis. Other factors are students' ability in understanding the systematics of writing the thesis, tending to use translation tools, lack og grammar and vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation in writing the thesis correctly. While, external factors were having communication problems with supervisors and supervisors’ writing, have difficulty in finding references related to thesis titles in the internet, there are no complete reference sources and no free access to digital libraries on campus, having technical problems on devices, have financial problems, personal problems, surrounding environment is not/less conducive. The researchers hope the result of this research will become important considerations for lecturers in advising their students especially in writing their thesis. Abstract

This research aimed to find out the University Students’ Needs in Learning General English Subject at PGRI Silampari University and the lecturer needs in designing RPS. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative. The population of this research was non English education study program students especially history education study program consist of 130 students. The sample of this research was sixth semester students with 28 students that was choosen by using purposive sampling. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. After that, the data were analyzed with description. The results showed that the purpose most of students learn English is being able to communicate with English and can speak English fluently. The students’ want from the lecturer were to help them to mastering English skills, make an enjoyable class, and give them interesting teaching method. Students’ wants of using English skills were they can being able to communicate with English, they can understand what the lecturer said in English, and can help them in applying job in the future. Furthemore, the students’ lacks were in speaking English, lack in writing, lack in listening and less of confidence with their skills. As the conclusion, the students’ needs more spesific English material that related to their major and interesting learning method from the lecturer to fulfil their needs. The lecturers’ need in designing syllabus were the lecturer should know the used of curiculum and what do the students usually learn. From those aspect the lecturer looking for the references that can be used to design materials to be given in one semester, which are on the syllabus add English components and English skills that related to their need and major. Abstract

The research aimed to describe the challenges done by English teachers in Lubuklinggau face in implementing effective vocabulary teaching. This research conducted in qualitative design with descriptive approach. Sample in this research as four English teachers at different junior high school that consist of state and Privat. In collecting the data, the researchers crated online questionnaire through google form and shared to the subject. The result showed Teaching English vocabulary to students presents challenges like lack of resources, motivation, and emotional barriers. Strategies include providing resources, motivating students, managing classroom dynamics, and using interactive exercises, multimedia resources, and differentiated approaches. To effectively teach English vocabulary, educators should utilize real-world examples, customize materials, and create a nurturing learning environment, while also ensuring efficient classroom control and time allocation. Abstract

The objective of this research was to analysis of compliment used by teacher in the classroom at SMA Negeri 5 Lubuklinggau. The method applied in this research was descriptive qualitative. The subject in this research was an English teacher at SMA 5 Lubuklinggau. The data was analyzed by describing the types of compliments used observation sheet, interview and documentation (field note and voice record). In analyzing the data, the research identified two types of compliments verbal and nonverbal compliments used by the teacher by using Usman (2017) theory. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found five kinds of verbal compliments, namely good (31 data), very good (19 data), well done (2 data), good job (20 data), excellent (3 data). And also the researcher found five kinds of nonverbal compliments namely applause and thumbs (5 data), gesture head movement (43 data), contact touching (5 data), gesture face expression (28 data), standing near to students (5 data). In conclusion, by giving a compliment the students’ mood to participate in the learning process can increase so that it will create a good atmosphere for both teachers and students.

Abstract

Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarkat yang telah dilaksanakan selama 3 hari pada tanggal 12, 13 dan 14 Agustus 2024 ini adalah untuk penguatan Self Eficacy pada siswa slow learner yang tergabung pada kelas Inklusif dengan bahan materi yaitu Basic English atau English Literacy dan Numeracy. Pelatihan penguatan Self Eficacy dan English Literacy dan Numeracy dilaksanakan dalam durasi 3 pertemuan dan terdiri dari beberapa sesi. Metode- metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, kelompok diskusi dan konseling, games serta vocabulary challenges. Pelatihan ini berisi tentang pengenalan Self Eficay Training, Generasi Z cinta Literasi dan English vocabulary. Untuk mengukur kegiatan berhasil atau tidak pelaksana PKM menggunakan tes Bahasa inggris dan interview. Hasil capaian yang diperoleh adalah terlaksananya pelatihan penguatan Self Eficacy, dalam hal ini terlihat slow learner yang mengikuti kegiatan yang awalnya tidak mau mengerjakan tugas berbahasa inggris setelah diberikan penguatan self efficacy slow learner dengan jumlah 20 siswa mengumpulkan tugas yang sudah di perintahkan sesuai dengan waktu yang sudah ditentukan dan Peningkatan dalam memahami Bahasa Inggris dalam kata hingga kalimat sangat sederhana serta peningkatan dalam mengenal angka atau simbol dengan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris, dalam hal ini dibuktikan dari total 20 slow learners yang tergabung pada kelas khusus terdapat 12 siswa yang bisa menjawab dengan minimal skor yaitu 70 sesuai dengan standar KKM pada kurikulum sekolah. Kemudian, 8 siswa lagi mendapatkan skor dibawah KKM yang artinya belum memenuhi kriteria ketuntasan minimal. Pada pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini juga ada 2 dosen Unpari yang dibantu oleh 3 mahasiswa yang sudah memiliki kemampuan English for young learner sangat baik dengan dibuktikan ketiga nya lulus Mata Kuliah English for Primary Learner.

Abstract

Stabilitas psikologi siswa sangat mempengaruhi keberhasilan siswa dalam mencapai tujuan pembelajaran dan berdampak pada prestasi belajar siswa. Salah satu faktor yang mempengarui prestasi belajar siswa adalah motivasi berprestasi siswa atau disebut dengan efikasi diri (self-efficacy). Berdasarkan hasil data yang didapat melalui angket yang dibagikan kepada 50 siswa kelas XII SMK Muhammadiyah Sarolangun Jambi, terdapat 17% siswa memiliki motivasi di bawah skala 7. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa motivasi berprestasi siswa masih rendah. Pelatihan efikasi diri adalah pelatihan yang bertujuan untuk menjaga kestabilan kondisi psikologis siswa dan motivasi berprestasinya. Pelatihan ini diharapkan dapat membantu siswa mengenali potensi diri dan menanamkan mindset positif. Pelatihan ini diberikan kepada siswa kelas XII SMK Muhammadiyah Sarolangun Jambi. Prosedur pelaksanaan pelatihan ini meliputi tiga tahapan, yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan refleksi. Metode pelaksanaan dilaksakanan melalui metode penyuluhan, diskusi, dan hypnoterapi. Pelatihan memberikan manfaat positif dalam memahami potensi diri dan menanamkan rasa syukur. Pelatihan mendapat respon baik dari siswa dimana pelatihan berlangsung sangat interaktif yang terlihat dari antusias siswa mengikuti kegiatan. Selain itu terdapat peningkatan peningkatan motivasi sebesar 12,3% setelah pelatihan. Motivasi siswa rata-rata berada pada skala 9 dan hanya 4,7 % siswa yang berada di bawah skala 7.

Abstract

The researcher formulated the problem What are the students’ motivation in Extensive Listening for the second semester at Universitas PGRI Silampari. In addition, the objectives of this research was to find out to describe the students motivation in Extensive Listening. This research will be conducted by using qualitative as well as descriptive method and it is designed to find out some information from actual condition. The subject of the research is the students of second semester at Universitas PGRI Silampari and the researcher collected the data based on the questionnaire is made based on google form for main data for supporting the data as the research instrument. The data from the online questionnaire was put into a table and summarized in form of percentages for each part of the questionnaire. The result of distributing students questionnaire consist of indicator included 20 statements for the second semester with a total of 24 students’ was explained descriptively by using the percentages.

Abstract

The aimed of this research to find out what were the types of second semester students’ communication apprehension and to find out the factors of second semester students’ communication apprehension in learning English as foreign language at PGRI Silampari University. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method and data collection was done through observation checklist and interview. The research involved 23 students of second semester English Education study program at PGRI Silampari University. The results showed that students communication apprehension experienced trait-like, context-based, audience-based and situational of CA. the factors of students’ communication apprehension in learning English as foreign language were nervous, lack of vocabulary, not confident, shy or embarrassed, afraid making mistakes, not comfortable with the situations, insecure and afraid for bad judgement or negative evaluation from others. In addition, the conclusion of this research were mostly students experienced trait-like and situational of CA and the factors students experiencing both types were due to nervous, lack of vocabulary, afraid making mistakes and afraid for negative evaluation or bad judgement.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe he types of directive speech act found A Man Called Otto movie. The method applied in this research was designed in qualitative descriptive. This research used human instrument by herself. The data was analyzed by describing the type of directive speech act in a movie. In collecting the data, the researcher watched A Man Called Otto movie and in analyzing the dataBased on the result of data analysis, the researcher found out four types of directive speech acts. The first type was commanding as the highest with 30 utterences. The second types was requesting with 28 utterances The third types was suggesting with 22 uttences. The last type was ordering. In conclusion, command was used to direct people or person to do something or do what the speaker wants, requesting was the expression of the speaker wants, request usually used in polite ways, suggestion was the opinion about what the addressee should or should not do from the speaker and in order, before do what the speaker wants, the listener will check the order of the speaker.
