Abstract

This study aims to explore the pedagogic competence of an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in teaching English, focusing on three main aspects: learning activities, classroom communication, and assessment practices. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study in Grade VIII Junior High School, with one English teacher as the subject. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using descriptive qualitative techniques, including data reduction, display, and interpretation. The findings indicate that the teacher demonstrated strong pedagogic competence by designing engaging, technology-based learning activities that utilized tools such as Quizizz, Kahoot, Canva, and educational videos. The use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) encouraged students to think critically and work collaboratively. The teacher also maintained positive classroom communication and used varied assessment methods, including formative, summative, authentic, and performance-based evaluations. In conclusion, the teacher’s pedagogic competence reflects a student-centered and technology-integrated approach that effectively supports English learning.

The results show that most of the students have positive sentiment towards the use of Duolingo as it is shown by the dominant prevalence of "Agree" and "Strongly agree" answers. However, in terms of competitiveness, Duolingo might not that convincing in making students have the desire to compete and get better score than their peers. Overall, students are aware with the motivational value that Duolingo potentially offers

Abstract

Reading is one of the fundamental skills needed to improve language skills and global knowledge. The key to increasing students' reading interest is to get them used to read from an early age. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of picture story books to increase students' reading interest in literacy activities and to find out teacher and student responses to it. This research is a qualitative descriptive study that includes teachers and 32 first-grade students in an elementary school in Trenggalek as research subjects. Based on the study's results, the use of picture story books in literacy activities was carried out in six steps with a different story at each meeting. Furthermore, teachers and students gave positive responses about it. Teachers agree that learning with picture story books can increase students' reading interest because pictures can help them understand the meaning of unknown words. Also, the use of picture story books can be an illustration to guide students in understanding the storyline and help develop students' cognitive aspects in critical thinking, as well as creating a sense of pleasure and enthusiasm during the reading process.

Abstract

This study investigates how students perceive the use of Padlet in collaborative academic writing. As digital platforms become increasingly integrated into language classrooms, understanding learners’ engagement with these technologies is essential for optimizing pedagogical outcomes. It employed a descriptive qualitative research design that involved 14 third-semester undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program at STIT Miftahul Midad Lumajang as the participants. The data of this study were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and documentation. The findings reveal five major themes that reflect students’ perceptions in using Padlet for collaborative academic writing, including enhanced engagement and confidence, support for the writing process, technological and interpersonal challenges, emotional and cognitive impact and metacognitive reflective practice. These themes provide a comprehensive understanding of how Padlet mediates students’ engagement, interaction, and learning development in digitally supported writing context. Overall, the study highlights Padlet’s potential to transform academic writing from an individual task into a dynamic, socially situated learning experience that promotes engagement, reflection, and collaborative knowledge construction in digital EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the correlation between students’ self-efficacy and critical thinking in argumentative writing. Employing a quantitative correlational research design, the study investigates how students’ confidence in their writing abilities influences their capacity to construct logical, well-supported arguments. The findings reveal a strong positive correlation (r = 0.684, p < 0.01) between self-efficacy and critical thinking, suggesting that students with higher self-efficacy tend to engage more effectively in analytical reasoning and evidence-based argumentation. Additionally, a paired t-test indicates a substantial improvement in both self-efficacy (mean difference = 15.88, p < 0.001) and critical thinking (mean difference = 17.22, p < 0.001) following targeted writing interventions. These results highlight the importance of integrating self-efficacy-enhancing strategies into writing instruction to foster students’ confidence and critical thinking skills. Despite its contributions, the study acknowledges limitations related to sample size (N = 32) and external influencing factors. Future research should explore broader and more diverse student populations to validate these findings further.

Abstract

Low motivation in learning English poses a major challenge in Indonesian elementary schools due to its non-native status and insufficient environmental support. This pre-experimental study examined the effectiveness of reward and punishment strategies to improve fifth-grade students’ English learning motivation. Employing a one-group pretest-posttest design, 33 purposively sampled students from Class 5-D at MI Perguruan Mu’allimat completed a 10-item, 4-point Likert motivation questionnaire adapted from Purmama et al. (2019) with acceptable reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.823). SPSS analysis showed a significant increase from pre-test (M = 24.91, SD = 3.70, moderate) to post-test (M = 33.52, SD = 3.25, high), confirmed by paired t-test (t = -11.197, df = 32, p 0.001). The strategy effectively boosted motivation through immediate feedback, recognition, and consequences, addressing intrinsic and extrinsic needs via competence, autonomy, and relatedness per Self-Determination Theory. Teachers can apply age-appropriate rewards and constructive punishments to foster engaging, disciplined classrooms that sustain interest in English.

Abstract

Vocabulary development is a fundamental component in early English language learning, especially for young learners in elementary school, yet third-grade students often struggle to retain new vocabulary due to limited exposure and the use of less engaging instructional media. This qualitative case study investigates the role of flashcards in enhancing animal vocabulary retention among third-grade students at Elementary School through the implementation of a custom-designed teaching module that integrates visual flashcards into interactive learning activities such as recognition drills, pronunciation practice, matching games, and creative labeling tasks. Data were collected through classroom observation, document analysis of the instructional module, and teacher reflection. The findings demonstrate that flashcards significantly increased students’ attention, enthusiasm, and willingness to participate orally, as picture–word associations helped students recall vocabulary more confidently and accurately. Game-based learning fostered collaboration and deeper memory retention, while the creative tasks enabled students to apply vocabulary in written form, indicating meaningful learning transfer. Additionally, flashcards supported inclusive learning by providing visual cues that assisted students with lower proficiency while encouraging higher-performing students to extend their vocabulary knowledge. Overall, the study concludes that incorporating flashcards into a structured and engaging teaching design is an effective strategy to improve English vocabulary retention among young learners.
