Abstract

The long-tailed mcaque (Macaca fascicularis) has a fairly wide population distribution in Indonesia. According to IUCN data, the population of long-tailed mcaque is decreasing every year, the cause is a decrease in habitat quality. One of the habitats of long-tailed mcaque which is currently under pressure due to conversion is located in a buffer village around the Orang Kayo Hitam Forest Park (Tahura OKH). This study aims to analyze the composition and age class of long-tailed monkeys. Observation methods were used to observe long-tailed mcaque based on morphological characteristics such as coat color and body size. Based on the results of the study, the composition of long-tailed mcaque was divided into two groups, the residential group (KP) and the river border group (KS). The number in KP is 8 individuals with an age class of 5 adults, 3 immature while the number in KS is 27 individuals with an age class of 18 adults, 4 immature, 3 juvenile, 1 infants. This condition illustrates that the river border habitat is better than the residential habitat. In addition, adults and adolescents are more numerous, indicating individuals who have a function for reproduction and continue reproduction. This breeding rate is the potential for regeneration of long-tailed mcaque and the potential for the regeneration process of peat ecosystems through the role of long-tailed monkeys as pollinators for seed dispersal.

Abstract

The sustainability of forest functions is closely related to the perspective of the communities living around it. This study aims to analyze community perspectives on forest conditions in KTH Talang Ponijan and Sidodadi I. Data was collected using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results of the research show that there are still differences between the community's views and their behavior towards community forest management (HKm). Most people in KTH Talang Ponijan and Sidodadi I utilize HKm land to improve their welfare. However, conditions in the field reveal that illegal practices such as logging, poaching, opening up new land for cultivation, and unsustainable land management threaten the balance of nature and worsen forest conditions. The government is expected to provide environmental education programs and facilitate training or guidance to strengthen the community's capacity to manage and utilize forests wisely.

Abstract

Peatlands are vulnerable to fire, causing ecological damage that threatens biodiversity, one of which is amphibians. The nature of amphibians which are sensitive to environmental changes can be used as a bioindicator of the quality of a disturbed environment, including in buffer villages around conservation areas. This research aims to analyze the diversity of amphibians and their relationship with temperature and air humidity. The method used is Visual Encounter Survey (VES) in two types of habitats, namely oil palm plantations and swamps. Data analysis used the Shannon-Wiener species diversity index, the Pielou species evenness index, and the Pearson correlation test. The research results found 6 species of amphibians, namely Hylarana erythraea, Hylarana nicobariensis, Fejervarya limnocharis, Fejervarya cancrivora, Duttaphrynus melanustictus, and Hylarana baramica. The diversity index (H') in oil palm plantations and swamps is H'=1.46 and H'=1.10 in the medium category. This shows that ecologically, the conditions of the habitat types of oil palm plantations and swamps in the buffer villages around the Orang Kayo Hitam Forest Park after land burning can support amphibian life. Key words: Amphibians, conservation area, diversity, tropical peatland.

Abstract

The global focus on endangered mammals highlights urgent, effective conservation strategies addressing habitat destruction, land-use changes, poaching, agricultural expansion, and encroachment. This study aims to identify research gaps in stakeholder engagement, map research trends and assess leading contributors of endangered mammal conservation, and explore opportunities for international collaboration for biodiversity conservation. This study was done using bibliometric analysis of 716 initial documents that were further selected to 85 publications based on PRISMA guidelines in R-Studio tools. This review highlights the fact that there is a limited focus on stakeholder engagement within mammal conservation research. Countries with high biodiversity, such as Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil, contribute less to the scientific literature than high-income countries. This imbalance suggests the need for equitable research funding and expanded collaboration. Strengthening partnerships with research-intensive countries could increase publication output and knowledge sharing. Furthermore, regional cooperation with other original countries with similarly endangered species, like Malaysia and Thailand, is essential for improving research quality and optimizing resource exchange. The findings further highlight the importance of sustainable conservation practices and stakeholder engagement in effectively fostering the protection of endangered mammal species. Keywords: conservation governance, endangered species, research partnership, stakeholder engagement, systematic literature review

Abstract

Indonesia has the second largest peatland area in the world, of which 19% is damaged due partly to forest fires and encroachment. The Orang Kayo Hitam (OKH) forest park located in the Indonesian province of Jambi is one among several peat forests in the country that remain largely intake. But as do other forested areas, the park faces severe encroachment threats. Multistakeholder partnership as stipulated by Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 17 offers a reasonable strategy to mitigate the threats. This article studies the driving and restraining factors, both externally and internally, that affect preservation of the park’s peatland as well as the development of effective partnership strategies. Results of the force field analysis show that community’s knowledge and awareness about the link between the park’s ecological and economic functions are the strongest internal driving factors, while lack of them are the strongest restraining ones. Availability of endemic species and frequency of forest fires are the strongest external driving and restraining factors, respectively.
