Abstract

English learning materials that incorporate local culture are limited, particularly those that reflect and preserve the Riau heritage. As Malay culture is deeply rooted in Islamic values, integrating these elements into language education can promote cultural transmission while enhancing student engagement. This study aims to design English learning materials that embed Riau cultural elements for tenth-grade students in Pekanbaru. This study adopts a descriptive-evaluative method within the Research and Development (RD) model proposed by Borg and Gall. The full model includes ten phases, but this research focuses specifically on the design phase (stages 2 and 3): learning objective planning and initial draft creation. Activities during this phase involved identifying and analyzing learning goals, assessing student characteristics, and developing a structured instructional plan. The subjects consisted of 40 tenth-grade students. The design process yielded English learning materials that integrate Riau heritage through culturally relevant texts and context-based exercises. The content was tailored to students' backgrounds to foster deeper comprehension, engagement, and emotional connection with the material. The materials were structured to support language acquisition while simultaneously promoting cultural preservation. Embedding local heritage into English language learning helps students develop linguistic proficiency and cultural identity simultaneously. These culturally infused materials are expected to enhance student motivation, interest, and participation by making learning more meaningful and relatable. This study provides a framework for developing localized educational content that fosters both academic and cultural growth, enabling students to share their heritage with a global audience.

Abstract

We carried out this community service project in RT 02/RW 08 of East Labuh Baru District, Pekanbaru, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Indonesian Independence in 2025. The program combined a gate decoration contest with various traditional community games (e.g., tug-of-war, sack races, and pole climbing) and special children’s competitions. These activities served as a vital mechanism for promoting social participation and citizen unity. Our main goal was to strengthen the community’s spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), enhance social solidarity, and instill a deeper sense of nationalism. We used a participatory approach for implementation, involving residents in every stage, from initial planning to final evaluation. The results demonstrated significant success: resident participation reached 95%, the neighborhood became noticeably cleaner and more attractive, and the RT 02/RW 08 residents even secured third place in the District-Level Gate Decoration Contest. This project proves that combining art, sport, and mutual cooperation (gotong royong) through community service effectively strengthens social cohesion and actively fosters a more harmonious character among urban residents

Abstract

This community service program aims to integrate a green project through the production of Tatakura (Takakura Home Method) compost into the school curriculum as a form of environmental education and sustainable learning. The program was implemented at SMPN 10 Pekanbaru and involved 25 students and four science teachers through stages of socialization, hands-on compost production, mentoring, and the application of the compost to school plants. The activity employed a Participatory Action Research approach that emphasized the active involvement of both teachers and students. Evaluation was conducted using learning achievement tests, environmental awareness attitude questionnaires, and partner satisfaction surveys. The data were analyzed descriptively by comparing mean scores and achievement percentages. The results indicate an improvement in students’ average scores from 84.8 to 87.2, an environmental awareness level of 88%, and partner satisfaction rates of 100% among teachers and 97% among students. These findings demonstrate that the program is effective in supporting the integration of environmental education and the implementation of Education for Sustainable Development.

Abstract

Speaking proficiency remains a persistent challenge in Indonesian EFL higher education, where students often demonstrate adequate linguistic knowledge but limited confidence and high speaking anxiety in oral communication. Although Virtual Reality (VR) has been widely discussed as an innovative tool in language learning, empirical evidence examining its effectiveness in improving both speaking performance and affective factors in Indonesian university contexts remains limited. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measures to examine the effectiveness of Virtual Reality (VR) technology in improving speaking skills among second-ssemester EFL students at the Islamic University of Riau. The study involved administering assessments before and after the intervention, without a separate control group, allowing measurement of changes attributable to VR-assisted instruction. The findings indicate that the use of VR contributed to positive developments in students’ speaking abilities and learning motivation. Quantitative data showed improvements in several key areas, while qualitative feedback highlighted increased motivation and engagement. The research outputs include empirical evidence supporting the integration of VR in EFL speaking classes, comparative assessment data, and the development of an instructional model for VR-based activities. These results are aligned with recent studies and the original research objectives.

Abstract

Keselamatan lalu lintas di perkotaan menjadi perhatian utama seiring meningkatnya penggunaan sepeda motor dan risiko kecelakaan. Studi ini menganalisis hubungan antara kesadaran keselamatan dan perilaku berisiko pengendara sepeda motor di Kota Bengkalis. Metode kuantitatif digunakan dengan survei kuesioner terhadap 400 responden, dianalisis menggunakan regresi linier dan korelasi. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa meskipun mayoritas pengendara memiliki kesadaran tinggi terhadap keselamatan, masih ditemukan perilaku berisiko seperti tidak menyalakan lampu utama di siang hari dan berkendara dengan kecepatan tinggi. Analisis regresi mengungkapkan bahwa pemahaman keselamatan hanya berkontribusi 14,1% terhadap perilaku berisiko, sementara faktor eksternal seperti infrastruktur jalan dan kepatuhan terhadap regulasi memiliki pengaruh lebih besar. Studi ini menegaskan bahwa peningkatan keselamatan berkendara tidak hanya bergantung pada kesadaran individu tetapi juga kebijakan tata kelola transportasi yang lebih baik. Sebagai tindak lanjut, penelitian lebih lanjut disarankan untuk mengeksplorasi efektivitas teknologi seperti pemantauan lalu lintas berbasis AI guna mengoptimalkan strategi mitigasi risiko bagi pengendara sepeda motor.

Abstract

Budaya literasi merupakan suatu budaya yang dapat menjadi acuan sebagai kualitas sumber daya manusia di sebuah negara. Budaya membaca Masyarakat Indonesia masih sangat rendah, meski Indonesia seringkali menjadi role model bagi negara-negara di Kawasan Asia Tenggara. Permasalahan ini dapat diatasi dengan membangun koneksi yang baik dengan generasi Z melalui bedah buku.  Kisah-kisah inspiratif dari novel kontemporer dapat membantu meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam membaca maupun menulis. Melalui pendekatan expressivist writing, penulis mengajak generasi Z untuk mencintai membaca dan menulis fiksi melalui kisah pengalaman hidup. Setelah itu, penulis mengajak peserta didik menulis fiksi atau narrative text sebagai pemantik agar siswa memiliki motivasi menulis. Hasil yang didapat ialah sudah Sebagian besar siswi memahami teknik menulis yang baik dan benar sesuai dengan petunjuk yang disampaikan.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Pembelajaran konservasi di tingkat sekolah masih menghadapi berbagai tantangan, terutama terkait dengan rendahnya literasi lingkungan serta terbatasnya pemahaman siswa terhadap fauna lokal. Kondisi ini menunjukkan perlunya edukasi konservasi yang kontekstual dan berbasis potensi lokal. Tujuan: Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kesadaran konservasi siswa melalui edukasi konservasi berbasis proyek dengan menggunakan atlas mini hewan vertebrata endemik Riau. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di SMP YLPI Perhentian Marpoyan dengan melibatkan siswa kelas IX. Metode: Metode yang digunakan meliputi sosialisasi, edukasi interaktif, diskusi, serta pembelajaran berbasis proyek melalui penyusunan atlas mini secara berkelompok, dengan evaluasi dilakukan melalui observasi partisipasi siswa dan hasil proyek. Hasil: Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan keterlibatan siswa, pemahaman konsep klasifikasi hewan vertebrata, serta pengenalan terhadap fauna lokal. Atlas mini yang dihasilkan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai media pembelajaran kontekstual di sekolah. Kesimpulan: Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan literasi sains dan kesadaran konservasi siswa serta berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai sumber belajar berbasis potensi lokal yang berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Gotong royong represents a fundamental traditional value within Indonesian society, functioning as a means of grassroots empowerment and fostering social resilience. This community service initiative took place in RT 02/RW 08, Jl. Arjuna, Labuh Baru Timur Village, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's Independence. The program aimed to involve residents actively in environmental restoration efforts. Community members collaborated to clean drainage systems and enhance public spaces, thereby promoting sustainable environmental practices and strengthening social cohesion within the neighborhood.
