Abstract

Autism is a developmental and behavioral disorder characterized by difficulties in communication, which is why various intervention methods are used to address it, one of which is the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). This research aims to determine whether the application of the PECS method can improve communication skills in children with autism. The method used is an experimental method, as this research is conducted with the aim of observing the effects of a treatment. Based on the results of the program for children with interaction and communication impairments that we applied to the subject with the initials SHD using PECS media over 5 meetings in Phase I, the result is that SHD can perform the Phase I tasks well and correctly. The result is that SHD was able to carry out Phase I tasks well and correctly. This allows SHD to proceed to Phase II of PECS, and if successful in this phase, it can continue to the next stages up to Phase VI. The use of the PECS method should be implemented intensively to achieve more optimal results, both in school and continued at home with guidance from parents. It is recommended for those who want to implement the PECS method to read the PECS method guidebook to gain a clear understanding and perspective, thus helping children develop their communication skills.

Abstract

This research began from a problem experienced by a sixth-grade student with mild intellectual disabilities who was unable to read at the beginning level, especially words with the KV-KVK pattern. The student could only read KV syllables and KV-KV patterned words. To address this issue, the Orton Gillingham method was used, which has been proven to enhance early reading skills. This study aims to improve beginning reading abilities through the Orton Gillingham method for students with mild intellectual disabilities. This research used a quantitative approach with a Single Subject Research (SSR) design of the A-B type. The subject was one student with mild intellectual disability. The independent variable was the Orton-Gillingham method, while the dependent variable was the student's early reading ability. Data were collected through tests and analyzed visually using graphs. The results showed an improvement from 30% during the baseline phase (three sessions) to 100% by the end of the intervention phase (seven sessions). Thus, the Orton-Gillingham method was effective in improving early reading skills in a student with mild intellectual

Abstract

The background of this research stems from the low ability to recognize numbers in children with ASD due to the lack of variety in teaching methods and engaging learning media. This study aims to describe the process and demonstrate the results of applying the Guided Discovery Learning (GDL) model in improving the understanding of natural numbers 1–10 in students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at SLB Negeri Muara Bungo. This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, each consisting of four meetings. The research subject is a teacher who teaches in a second-grade class. The data were collected through observation and learning outcome tests, and then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in a descriptive manner. The research results show a significant increase in the ability to recognize natural numbers 1–10, with the average score of students rising from 15% in the pre-cycle to 65% in Cycle I, and reaching 92% in Cycle II. This improvement demonstrates that the Guided Discovery Learning model is effective in helping GSA children understand number concepts concretely and enjoyably through exploratory activities and gradual guidance.

Abstract

This article discusses efforts to improve the ability to determine place value using number trees in students with autism spectrum disorder. This study used a quantitative approach with a single subject research (SSR) A-B design experimental method. The research subject was a student who had difficulty determining place value. Data collection techniques consisted of tests conducted during 15 meetings, consisting of 5 baseline phase meetings and 10 intervention phase meetings. Data analysis was performed visually using graphs to observe changes in the subject's performance. In the baseline phase, the student's completion rate was stable at 30%, 30%, 30%, 30%, 30%. After the intervention with the number tree media, there was a significant increase with the percentage of number place values ranging from 60%, 60%, 70%, 70%, 70%, 90%, 80%, 80%, 80%, 80%. The intervention was stopped after 10 meetings because the data showed a stable increase and met the criteria for successful intervention in SSR, namely that student performance was achieved and there were no indications of a decline (maintenance). The results of this study prove that the number tree media is effective in improving the ability to determine place value in students with autism spectrum disorder at SLB Al-Ikhlas Bukittinggi.
