Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) as a strategic planning tool in a non-profit, community-based Early Childhood Education institution, using a case study of ECE Kemah Pujian in East Jakarta. The research contributes to the understanding of how BMC can be adapted within rural education settings characterized by diverse socio-cultural dynamics. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with school administrators, parents, and community partners, as well as through field observations and institutional documentation. The findings reveal that ECE Kemah Pujian has successfully developed a business model that emphasizes active community participation, the integration of local values, and flexible financing strategies. The institution’s main value proposition lies in providing early childhood education that is safe, affordable, and contextually relevant to local social needs. Its funding, sourced from voluntary contributions, village funds, and community donations, illustrates a high level of community empowerment. The interconnection of all nine BMC components, such as partnerships with local government and community leaders (key partnerships), and personalized approaches to engaging with parents (customer relationships), plays a crucial role in sustaining the institution. This study confirms that BMC can be effectively applied in non-profit educational settings and may serve as a strategic model for similar institutions in other areas. Furthermore, it demonstrates how local value-based business modeling can enhance the role of education institutions as integral actors in grassroots social development.

Abstract

Science learning at the early childhood education (PAUD) and elementary school levels, particularly in 3T (disadvantaged) areas such as South Papua, is plagued by a serious problem: a learning process that is still theoretical, non-contextual, and disconnected from students' real environments. This condition causes students to simply memorize science concepts without understanding their relevance. This gap ironically occurs amidst the wealth of local wisdom (such as the stone-burning tradition and sago processing) that is rich in scientific value, yet its potential has not been optimally utilized as a visual and manipulative learning medium. This study focuses on exploring the scientific values ????in South Papuan local wisdom as a fundamental basis for developing contextual science learning media. The important stages of this research adopt a simplified Borg & Gall R&D model, including a preliminary study, exploration of science values ????through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies at Santa Maria Fatimah Kindergarten and SDN 1 Merauke, prototype design, expert validation, and limited practicality testing. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. Key findings identify various cultural practices relevant to science concepts (heat transfer, changes in matter, ecosystems). This research produced a local wisdom map, a media prototype, and an initial model for culture-based science integration. It concluded that South Papuan local wisdom has great potential to be used as a valid and practical contextual science medium, which not only strengthens scientific understanding but also supports Freedom to Learn.

Abstract

The "Crabs in a Barrel Syndrome" (CBS), a behaviour characterised by undermining peers to maintain one’s own position, can hinder collaboration and innovation in Early Childhood Education (ECE) institutions. This study aims to examine how CBS manifests in the workplace culture of ECE teachers and to explore collaborative leadership strategies to mitigate such behaviours. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving 9 participants across three ECE centres in Merauke, Indonesia. Thematic analysis was conducted using Braun and Clarke’s six-step framework. The findings reveal that CBS manifests as fear of dominance, resistance to change, and avoidance of open collaboration. However, interventions such as weekly reflection forums, collective appreciation systems, and participatory leadership proved effective in fostering trust, enhancing team cohesion, and nurturing a more constructive work environment. This study concludes that organisational designs that promote psychological safety and transparent communication are essential in countering harmful competitive cultures. Theoretically, the research contributes to the understanding of micro-organisational dynamics in educational settings, while practically, it offers concrete recommendations for ECE administrators to cultivate inclusive and collaborative workplaces.

Abstract

Digital learning media management is a crucial skill required by the heads of educational institutions to navigate the digital era. This research aims to depict: (1) the challenges faced by the leaders of Early Childhood Education (PAUD) institutions in Merauke City in managing technomedia in the learning process, and (2) the strategies employed by these leaders to overcome challenges in technomedia management during the learning process. The informants for this study were purposefully sampled from school principals in Merauke City. The primary challenges confronted by school principals in managing digital learning media in Early Childhood Education institutions (PAUD) include the availability of adequate technological resources, the development of teachers' skills in using technology, and the management of student data security and privacy. School principals also need to take into account parental involvement in supporting the use of digital media at home and ensure that technology use remains balanced with the physical and social activities of children. To tackle these challenges, strategies employed by school principals include organizing training and developing teachers' skills in technology use, selecting quality digital learning content, and establishing clear policies and guidelines related to technology use. Additionally, careful monitoring of students' technology use and maintaining a balance between technology use and traditional learning experiences are also emphasized. By implementing these strategies, PAUD school principals can effectively manage digital learning media, enhance the quality of early childhood education, and ensure that technology is used judiciously in the learning process.
