Abstract

Background: Stunting is a nutritional problem that still occurs frequently in toddlers and can have long-term impacts on physical growth, cognitive development, and future productivity. Maternal knowledge about nutrition and appropriate supplementary feeding practices play a crucial role in meeting children's nutritional needs and preventing growth disorders. However, low maternal knowledge and inappropriate feeding practices remain contributing factors to stunting in toddlers. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between maternal knowledge about nutrition and supplementary feeding practices and the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 12–36 months. Method: Using an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach, the study was conducted among mothers of toddlers aged 12–36 months in the Sori Utu Community Health Center working area. A total of 114 respondents were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire to measure maternal knowledge about nutrition and supplementary feeding practices provision practices, while stunting status was determined through anthropometric measurements based on the height-for-age index. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: Most respondents had adequate nutritional knowledge (40.4%) and good supplementary feeding practices (54.4%). The prevalence of stunting in toddlers was 37.7%. Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between maternal knowledge of nutrition and the incidence of stunting (p<0.001). A significant association was also found between supplementary feeding practices and stunting (p<0.001). Toddlers whose mothers had poor nutritional knowledge and poor supplementary feeding practices were at higher risk of stunting. Conclusion: This study shows that maternal knowledge of nutrition and supplementary feeding practices are significantly associated with the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 12–36 months. Suggestion: Further research is recommended to examine other factors associated with stunting, such as history of infectious diseases, environmental sanitation, household food security, family socioeconomic status, birth weight, and maternal nutritional status during pregnancy.   Keywords: Maternal Knowledge; Nutrition; Supplementary Feeding; Stunting; Toddlers.

Abstract

Background: Stunting remains a major nutritional problem in Indonesia and can affect children's growth and development. Utilizing nutrient-rich local foods is one strategy to support nutritional improvement in stunted children. Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) is a good source of high-quality animal protein, while moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera) are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These ingredients have the potential to be developed into nutritious food products. However, consumer acceptance is a critical factor determining product utilization. Purpose: To analyze the acceptability and differences in sensory evaluation of mackerel meatballs enriched with moringa leaves in stunted children aged 36–59 months. Method: This experimental study used three formulations of Spanish mackerel meatballs with different concentrations of moringa leaves: F1 (10%), F2 (15%), and F3 (20%). The study was conducted in June 2025 within the working area of the Langgudu Timur Community Health Center, Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. Acceptability testing was conducted by 30 panelists using a hedonic test covering aspects of taste, color, aroma, and texture on a five-point scale. Data were analyzed using the Friedman test at a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). Results: Significant differences in acceptability were found among the three formulations for all sensory aspects (p<0.05). Formulation F2 had the highest average ratings for taste (2.53), aroma (2.60), and texture (2.82). Meanwhile, formulation F3 had the highest average rating for color (2.82). Overall, formulation F2 demonstrated the highest level of acceptability among panelists. Conclusion: There were significant differences in acceptability of mackerel fish balls with added moringa leaves based on taste, color, aroma, and texture. Formulation F2, containing 15% moringa leaves, was the most preferred formulation and has the potential to be developed as a nutritious local food alternative to support stunting prevention and management programs. Suggestion: Further research is recommended to analyze the nutritional content, product shelf life, and examine the effect of mackerel fish ball and moringa leaf consumption on the nutritional status and growth of stunted children to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the product's benefits.   Keywords: Acceptability; Moringa Leaves; Local Nutritious Food; Spanish Mackerel Meatballs; Stunting.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a major public health issue, with prevalence rates remaining above the WHO critical threshold. At the family level, a mother's formal education and accurate understanding of the first 1000 days of life period are key pillars determining a child's nutritional status and growth. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between maternal education levels and knowledge regarding the first 1000 days of life period and the incidence of stunting in children aged 0-59 months. Method: This observational analytic study, utilizing a case-control design, was conducted in the working area of the Rasanae Timur Community Health Center, Bima City, between February and March 2026. The study sample consisted of 89 mothers with children aged 0–59 months. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire regarding education and knowledge concerning the "First 1,000 Days of Life" period, while stunting status was determined through direct anthropometric measurements analyzed using WHO Anthro software. Data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-Square (χ²) test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Bivariate analysis showed a highly significant relationship between maternal education levels and stunting incidence (p< 0.001); 40.6% of mothers with low education levels had stunted children, compared to 7.0% of mothers with high education levels. Additionally, a significant relationship was found between maternal knowledge regarding the first 1000 days of life period and stunting (p < 0.001), with the highest incidence of stunting observed in the group of mothers with poor knowledge (66.7%), compared to those with adequate (7.1%) or good (14.3%) knowledge. Conclusion: Maternal education levels and knowledge regarding the first 1000 days of life period are significantly associated with the incidence of stunting in children. Strengthening cognitive literacy focused on specific phases within the first 1000 days of life cycle is crucial for inclusion in behavior change intervention programs aimed at preventing stunting.   Keywords: 1000 First Days of Life; Maternal Education; Maternal Knowledge; Stunting.

Abstract

Preterm birth is a maternal-neonatal health problem that contributes to morbidity, mortality, and long-term healthcare needs. This study aimed to develop and conduct preliminary internal validation of a preterm birth prediction model based on chronic energy deficiency (KEK) status and anaemia among pregnant women in Bima City. This quantitative analytical study developed a prediction model for preterm birth using logistic regression. A total of 44 pregnant women were recruited through purposive sampling, based on predetermined inclusion criteria and the availability of complete data on birth outcomes, chronic energy deficiency (CED/KEK) status, anaemia, maternal age, parity, and antenatal care (ANC) visits. The analyses comprised descriptive and bivariate analyses, multivariable logistic regression, discrimination assessment using the receiver operating characteristic-area under the curve (ROC-AUC), calibration assessment using the Brier Score, threshold determination using the Youden Index, and internal validation through bootstrap resampling. Five of 44 respondents (11,36%) experienced preterm birth. The main model yielded the equation Logit(P) = -2,9517 + 0,2041(KEK) + 3,3171(Anemia). KEK yielded an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 1,226 (95% CI 0,069-21,715; p=0,889), while anaemia yielded an AOR of 27,579 (95% CI 2,800-271,677; p=0,004). The apparent ROC-AUC of 0,7487 decreased to 0,6725 after optimism correction using bootstrap. The apparent Brier Score was 0,0697. At a threshold of 0,5903, model sensitivity was 60,0% and specificity was 94,9%. The combination of KEK and anaemia can be formulated into a probabilistic model for predicting preterm birth, with anaemia providing the strongest predictive signal in the study sample. However, the limited number of preterm birth events resulted in unstable estimates and performance optimism. The model should be positioned as a pilot model and requires further development in a larger sample and external validation before being used for risk stratification in ANC services.
