Abstract

Insect activity including its life cycle can determine the estimated time of death or Post Mortem Interval (PMI). One type of insect that plays an important role in determining the estimated time of death is flies. This study aims to determine the types of flies that come to the carcass and to determine the types of flies that dominate and less dominate from each treatment onwhite rat (carcassesR. norvegicusmale) outdoors. This study consisted of 3 treatments with 3 repetitions each. The treatments included A (neck bone dislocation), B (burned), and C (poisoned). Carcass observations were carried out for 10 days and larvae collection was carried out every 2 days starting from the third day of observation. The parameters observed included the number and morphological characteristics of instar 3 fly larvae. The types of fly larvae found in all treatments were Lucilia illustris (5.42%), Sarcophaga sp (12.80%), Sarcophaga argyrostoma (30.62%), and Sarcophaga variegata (51.16%). The dominant fly larvae of the three treatments was S. variegata and the less dominant fly larvae was L. illustris.

Abstract

Telenomus remus is parasitoid on many Lepidpoteran. Morphological analysis on T. remus is important to understand their behavior and assest the quality of parasitoid comes from the mass rearing process. However, the information of T. remus body setae cuticle characteristics were limited. This study aimed to explore the body setae on the mesonotum of of T. remus by using electron microscopy analysis and characterize their cuticle characterisics to infer the putative function of the body setae. The results showed structures that support the body setae on the mesonotum as mechanoreceptor. The structure included the long and dangling seta peg, a socket, and a gap between a socket and the base of the seta peg. The putative function related to the biology and behavior of T. remus were discussed.

Abstract

Houseflies (M. domestica) are vectors of disease in humans and animals, so vegetable insecticides are needed that can be used to control M. domestica populations, one of which is Arabica coffee fruit peel extract. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving various concentrations of 96% ethanol extract of Arabica coffee fruit peel on the mortality of M. domestica larvae, as well as calculating the LC50 and LT50 values of M. domestica larval mortality. The research design was a completely randomized design (CRD) using 20 third instar larvae of M. domestica. The concentration variations of Arabica coffee fruit peel extract tested were 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 0% as control with 3 replicates using the feeding assay method. Larval mortality was observed for 48 hours (hour 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, and 48) post extract. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential analysis using Kruskal-Wallis test and probit analysis of LC50 and LT50. The results showed a significance value >0.05, meaning that there was no significant difference in the mortality of third instar larvae of M. domestica between treatments. The LC50 value obtained was 0.01%. LT50 values at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% were 274.52 hours, 134.90 hours, 532.20 hours and 0 hours, respectively. The conclusion of this study is that 96% ethanol extract of Arabica coffee fruit peel has no effect on the mortality of M. domestica larvae, the concentration of Arabica coffee fruit peel extract that causes the fastest death of M. domestica larvae is 0.1%, and LT50 at extract concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5% is 274.52 hours, 134.90 hours, and 532.20 hours, at 0% and 1% concentrations have no LT50 value.

Abstract

The conversion of land functions can result in a decrease of environmental quality, which can reduce the diversity of butterflies. This study aimed to determine the diversity level and to find the most abundant and less abundant butterfly species around campus 4 UAD. The sampling was done at campus area, vacant land, rice fields and housing sites. Each of these sites had 2 plots and consisted of 5 subplots, respectively. Sampling was carried out four times, which was done in the morning at 08.00 - 11.00 and in the afternoon at 15.00 - 17.00. Butterflies caught using a sweep net. The data were analyzed by inferential analysis, namely Pearson correlation test. The calculation of the diversity level of butterflies was carried out by calculating the importance value index, the diversity Shannon-Wiener index, and the Simpson dominance index. The results showed that the diversity level of Shannon Wiener index of butterflies around the campus 4 UAD showed a low level (0.67). The species of butterflies found around campus 4 UAD were Acraea violae, Aphrissa statira, Appias libythea, Appias olferna, Catopsilia pyranthe, Catopsilia Scylla, Danaus Chrysippus, Elymnias hypermnestra, Junonia almana, and Junonia atlites. The most abundant butterfly was C. pyranthe with 125 individuals whereas the least abundant was A. libythea with 1 individual. This suggested that the ecosystem around campus 4 UAD is disturbed category; causing instability of the diversity that exists, including butterflies.
