Abstract

Microplastics in the body of fish can damage the function of organs. One of the aquatic biota that can be affected by microplastics is Mutiara catfish. The study aimed to compare the gill morphology of Mutiara catfish after being exposed to microplastics.  This study was an experimental study consisting of four treatments, feed treatment with microplastic added with a weight of 0.00 mg/0.75 g feed (control); 0.01 mg/ 0.75 g feed (P1); 0.1 mg/0.75 g (P2); and 1 mg/0.75 g (P3). Each treatment was repeated seven times (seven buckets) and each bucket was filled with five fish so that a total of 140 fish were used. The treatment was carried out for 28 days. Observation of growth parameters was carried out on the entire population, 140 fish, while organ preparation was carried out on a sample of three fish from each treatment. Fish samples were taken using a stratified random sampling technique. Research parameters include gill weight, primary lamela length (LP) and secondary lamela lenght (LS). The results showed the highest gill weight at control 1.76 ± 0.47 g and the lowest at P1 1.20 ± 0.25 g, although it did not significantly different. The highest gill weight/ body weight at control 0.06 ± 0.02 g and the lowest P1 and P2 0.04 ± 0.00 g, although it did not significantly different. Primary lamela length (LP) was highest at P3 1250.34 ± 294.81 μm and lowest at Control 894.78 ± 399.10 μm, and it was significantly different. Secondary lamela lenght (LS) was highest at P3 33.69 ± 4.34 μm and lowest at P1 29.12 ± 5.29 μm. Among controls, P2 and P3; LS length did not significantly different. Microplastic PE up to 1.00 mg/ 0.75 g of feed does not result in a decrease of gill weight and elongation of secondary lamela, but results in significant lengthening of primary lamela.

Abstract

The growth of flies on the carcass could be an indicator in estimating Post Mortem Interval. The aim of this study was to determine the type of flies and their abundance on the carcass of white rats (Rattus norvegicus) given various doses of diazinon’s organophosphate poison. This research was an experimental study using 12 female wistar white rats, aged 2-3 months, weighing 150-200 g. This study consisted of four treatments with three repetitions of each treatment. Variations in the dose of organophosphate given were treatment A (1.5 mL), B (2.5 mL), and C (3.5 mL). The parameters observed included the types and abundance of flies on the carcasses of white rats that were treated with organophosphate poisoning at different doses. Data analysis was carried out including the normality test, then continued with the homogeneity test and finally the analysis of variance test was carried out and the test results were not significantly different. The types of flies found on the carcass were Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, Chrysomya albiceps, C. megacephala and C. bezziana. The highest average abundance was S. haemorrhoidalis (34.3 larvae) and the lowest average abundance of fly larvae was C. bezziana (16.3 larvae). The conclusion of this study was that the variation in the dose of organophosphate does not affect the type, abundance and time of appearance of fly larvae on the carcass.

Abstract

Houseflies (M. domestica) are vectors of disease in humans and animals, so vegetable insecticides are needed that can be used to control M. domestica populations, one of which is Arabica coffee fruit peel extract. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving various concentrations of 96% ethanol extract of Arabica coffee fruit peel on the mortality of M. domestica larvae, as well as calculating the LC50 and LT50 values of M. domestica larval mortality. The research design was a completely randomized design (CRD) using 20 third instar larvae of M. domestica. The concentration variations of Arabica coffee fruit peel extract tested were 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1% and 0% as control with 3 replicates using the feeding assay method. Larval mortality was observed for 48 hours (hour 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, and 48) post extract. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential analysis using Kruskal-Wallis test and probit analysis of LC50 and LT50. The results showed a significance value >0.05, meaning that there was no significant difference in the mortality of third instar larvae of M. domestica between treatments. The LC50 value obtained was 0.01%. LT50 values at concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% were 274.52 hours, 134.90 hours, 532.20 hours and 0 hours, respectively. The conclusion of this study is that 96% ethanol extract of Arabica coffee fruit peel has no effect on the mortality of M. domestica larvae, the concentration of Arabica coffee fruit peel extract that causes the fastest death of M. domestica larvae is 0.1%, and LT50 at extract concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5% is 274.52 hours, 134.90 hours, and 532.20 hours, at 0% and 1% concentrations have no LT50 value.
