Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the English language learners’ attitude on the online learning of receptive skills, namely listening and reading skills, conducted in English Language Education Department of UIN Raden Intan Lampung. One hundred and twenty-four students of the first year of English Education Department participated in this descriptive quantitative research with online survey design. The data were collected by using a close-ended questionnaire of the ABC model of attitude proposed by Jain which revealed three elements; affective, behavior, and cognition. The questionnaire was administered online to the students who had experienced the process of teaching and learning online in listening and reading courses. The result showed that students’ attitude towards online learning of receptive skills indicated as positive attitude on affective aspect (x̄ = 3.04), behavioral aspect (x̄ = 3.01) and cognitive aspect (x̄ = 3.01) which concerned on the online learning platforms, task completion, lecturers’ strategies in delivering online materials, online group discussion, and receptive skills improvement. In spite of the positive results elicited from this research, there were some limitations encountered such as learning platforms provided by the lecturer, their strategies in teaching receptive skills, and task types which had not been revealed in this research. Thus, for the future research who are interested in doing research in education, it is expected to investigate those areas.

Abstract

Listening is an essential aspect of our daily lives, but remains one of the most challenging language skills to master. This study explores the use of metacognitive listening journals with environmental themes in a class teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). The research assesses the effectiveness of listening journals, their incorporation of environmental subjects, and their suitability for educational purposes. The study used quantitative and qualitative approaches, including questionnaires and group interviews. The data analysis involved the utilisation of Likert scale and thematic analysis techniques. While previous research has underscored the importance of extensive listening, there has been limited exploration of the integration of environmental issues in EFL classrooms. Our study addresses this gap by focusing on learners’ perceptions of the efficacy of listening journals and the impact of environmental topics on their environmental awareness. The result revealed that most students have a positive perception of the use of listening journals in extensive listening that integrates environmental issues. Moreover, a significant proportion of students demonstrate a desire to engage in proactive measures aimed at safeguarding the environment

Abstract

Listening is a difficult basic skill to learn a second language because things like bad classroom environment, student with different language abilities, and limited vocabulary can make it harder. This study examines the impact of the Auditory, Intellectual, and Repetition (AIR) learning model on the listening skills of eighth-grade students at a private junior high school in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Due to research ethics, we can refer to the school by its initials, SMP AH. This study employed a quasi-experimental design, comprising two classes: one experimental class: 8 Thariq, n=25; and one control class: 8 Usamah, n=25, both recruited using cluster random sampling techniques from the population of eighth-grade students at SMP AH. Data for the research were gathered by multiple-choice pre-test and post-test. The study’s finding demonstrated a significant improvement in listening skills within the experimental group, as indicated by a two-sided significance value of 0.018 (< α = 0.05). This result rejects the null hypothesis and confirms the effectiveness of the AIR model. The results of this study demonstrate that the AIR model can enhance listening abilities in EFL contexts, providing valuable insights for teachers and educators. Subsequent research ought to investigate the long-term impact of employing the AIR model and utilize larger samples. Keywords: Auditory, Intellectual, and Repetition (AIR) learning model; listening skill; quasi- experimental design; second language acquisition; EFL teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of how Indonesian English Education students describe their teaching experiences during the 2024 International Service Learning Program in Malaysia. Employing a qualitative narrative inquiry design, data were collected through in-depth interviews and reflective narratives, then analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns within the participants' stories. The findings reveal three central themes: (1) cultural adjustment, reflected in students' efforts to navigate different classroom norms and communication styles; (2) pedagogical shift, demonstrated through their Adaptation of teaching strategies to meet Malaysian learners' expectations; and (3) professional identity formation, emerging through ongoing reflection on their roles as novice teachers in a cross-cultural context. These results contribute to the theoretical understanding of intercultural teacher education by highlighting the value of narrative Inquiry in capturing identity development within transnational teaching spaces. Practically, this study underscores the importance of structured intercultural preparation for pre-service teachers. At the same time, at the policy level, it emphasizes the need to expand international exposure programs to strengthen global teaching competencies.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges teachers encounter when teaching reading to young learners at SD N 2 Way Dadi. The research was prompted by observed difficulties in delivering effective reading instruction to early-grade students, with the primary aim of identifying and analyzing specific pedagogical obstacles. Grounded in Aryana and Apsara's theoretical framework, the study examines critical aspects of reading instruction including instructional media utilization, teaching strategies, material selection appropriateness, teaching technique efficacy, classroom conditions, textbook quality, and technological resource availability. These interconnected factors collectively influence reading instruction quality and were systematically explored through a descriptive qualitative methodology. Data collection employed in-depth interviews with English teachers and structured classroom observations, while analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model's three-stage process: data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that teachers face multifaceted challenges predominantly stemming from five key areas: limited access to suitable learning media, ineffective instructional strategies, suboptimal classroom environments, inadequate teaching materials, and insufficient technological support. These constraints collectively hinder optimal reading instruction delivery and student literacy development. The study's significance lies in its contextual examination of reading instruction barriers within a specific educational setting, contributing empirical evidence to the discourse on early literacy education. The identified challenges suggest urgent needs for: targeted teacher training programs, improved resource allocation, and strategic interventions to enhance reading pedagogy. These findings offer valuable insights for educational policymakers and school administrators seeking to improve early reading instruction outcomes. Furthermore, the research highlights potential areas for future studies, particularly regarding innovative solutions to resource limitations in developing educational contexts.

Abstract

In March 2020 and the global outbreak of the coronavirus prompted the government to adjust its policies including the closure of educational institutions and swiftly shift to online learning. The aim of the research study was to describe the experiences of three English-language lecturers who taught listening during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It examines the challenges faced, including the shift to distance education, the preparation of teaching materials, and the navigation of unexpected obstacles. This research used collaborative auto-ethnography (CAE) as a qualitative study. This method involves the collaboration between the first, second, and third authors to gain understanding and insight into their shared experience. The data collection process was conducted in early 2021. After we taught extensive listening in the 3rd semester of the academic year 2020-2021. For collecting the data we used the story of our experience in a narrative inquiry, photo voice, and semi-structured interview that was analyzed using a thematic analysis. The fings of this study, from the experiences of the three authors as lecturers indicate that the epidemic situation is not a barrier to contributing positively to the world of education. One of the positive effects is that it can increase the creativity of teachers or lecturers in developing teaching materials and using TPACK and also help students evaluate concepts and theories more critically. This study also reveals that, despite experiencing problems such as unstable internet signals in their respective areas, teachers and lecturers are able to adapt to both academic and non-academic environments.
