Abstract

Emergency dental issues such as throbbing toothaches, dental trauma (fractures, dislodgment from the gums), teeth pierced by orthodontic wires, and wires from dental braces causing injuries by piercing the gums, are some of the health problems that can result in prolonged suffering for those experiencing them. Every case has a different level of emergency. Although for some people it is not considered a real emergency, it is still a condition that urgently requires proper action before going to the dentist. Therefore, there is a need for increased knowledge to provide first aid before visiting a dentist. Collaborative efforts between medical professionals, alumni, and professional students from the Faculty of Dentistry at Trisakti University conducted an activity involving education for the adolescent community at the Integrated Child-Friendly Public Space (RPTRA) in Kayu Mas, East Jakarta, on March 16, 2023. Before and after the distribution of education, pre and post-tests were conducted, showing significant improvements in knowledge regarding dental emergencies. The conclusion drawn from this activity underscores the importance of knowing the initial steps to handle dental emergencies in order to receive appropriate medical care.

Abstract

Dental and oral health for elderly is crucial and has impact on the individual’s general health. Physical decline in the elderly is characterized by skin starting to shrink, hair beginning to change colour, loss of bone density, ability to see up to loss of mucous teeth. Tooth loss can interfere with the function of chewing, speaking and aesthetics. This condition can be aggravated by poor dental and oral hygiene. Therefore, dental health education is important to provide elderly an information about how to maintain oral health and prevent dental problem. The method used in this research is by providing education through power point media, given to Anggrek Bulan Elderly Community in November 25th 2023. Evaluation of participants’ knowledge was carried out before and after education by giving assessment sheet in the form of multiple choices to determine the level of community knowledge. Based on evaluation results, it was found that there was an increase in knowledge among the participants. This can be seen in average value of post-test results which has increased.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Malocclusion is a common oral disorder that strongly correlates with orthodontic treatment needs (OTN), however the complete picture of OTN remains unclear. This bibliometric study was conducted to develop a complete picture of the OTN from 1974-2022. The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of scientific research pertaining to orthodontic treatment needs Methods: Type of study was bibliometric analysis. The term "orthodontic treatment need" was used to search for relevant articles in the Scopus database. VOSviewer, OpenRefine, and Tableau Public were used to illustrate the contributions of authors, journals, institutions, countries and the co-occurrence analysis and references analysis of the keywords. Result: There were 890 publications produced as a result of this study. Richmond emerged as the author with the most extensive publication record, having authored a remarkable 21 pieces that garnered a cumulative total of 524 citations.  The analysis reveals that the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States emerged as the primary contributors to literature pertaining to the assessment of orthodontic treatment necessity. The analysis of keywords revealed the occurrence of seven distinct clusters, which are: Index of Orthodontic Treatment (IOTN), orthodontic treatment, quality of life, orthodontic, malocclusion, and oral health-related quality of life. The largest cluster identified in the study was "malocclusion," encompassing factors such as prevalence, the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), treatment necessity, and the need for orthodontic intervention. Conclusion: In general, the number of articles addressing the need for orthodontic treatment has increased, particularly in the third and fourth decades. In the fourth decade, there were more articles about the IOTN that contained keywords directly related to the index, as well as self-esteem, quality of life, and its socio-demographic and socio-economic status correlation. KEYWORDSorthodontic treatment need; malocclusion; bibliometric; quality of life.

Abstract

Malocclusion’s negative impact is not only limited to dentofacial appearance but also related to quality of life. Nowadays, orthodontic treatment can be done using conventional fixed appliances, or removable appliances called clear aligners. The preference for orthodontic appliances can be affected by several factors, including patient characteristics, self-perception, psychosocial, and oral-disorder factors. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the preference for orthodontic appliances among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 244 undergraduate students were retrieved by purposive sampling from 7 universities located in West Jakarta. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data, and logistic regression analysis was carried out. Results: Fixed orthodontic appliances were commonly used (79.5%), and the majority of treatment providers were orthodontists (64.8%). Students’ belief that poor dental alignment is related to decreased social attractiveness was significantly associated with the preference for orthodontic appliances (p = 0.026; 95% CI = 1.170-11.317). Orthodontic treatment provider was significantly associated with a preference for orthodontic appliances (p = 0.000; 95% CI = 0.678-3.156). Conclusion: Fixed orthodontic appliances still become the main preference for malocclusion treatment among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Besides that, the qualification of orthodontic treatment providers affects the preference for orthodontic appliances among undergraduate students in West Jakarta.

Abstract

Introduction: Determining skeletal maturity is crucial in determining orthodontic treatment planning and treatment timing. The timing of orthodontic treatment is influenced by the patient's maturation stage, but each person develops at a different rate. Biological age, which considers body growth, is more accurate measure than chronological age. Radiograph of the cervical vertebrae and wrist bones can be used to assess maturity. Objective: This review aims to investigate the assessment of skeletal maturity using cervical vertebrae (CVMS) and hand-wrist (HWM) radiographs. Discussion: CVMS and HWM are two common methods for assessing skeletal maturity. CVMS utilizes lateral cephalometric radiographs, while HWM employs hand-wrist radiographs. Both methods offer advantages, such as simplicity and correlation with other maturity indicators. However, each method also has limitations, including subjectivity and radiation exposure. Conclusion: CVMS and HWM methods are valuable tools for assessing skeletal maturity in orthodontics. Dentists should carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of each method when required to do growth assessment.

Abstract

Crowded teeth are one of the dental and oral health issues that need attention in Indonesia. Crowded teeth can be caused by genetic factors, growth abnormalities, or bad habits formed from a young age. Knowledge about the causes, impacts, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth is important to enhance from an early age. The Community Service activity by the Faculty of Dentistry team from Trisakti University aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the GBI HMJ Jakarta congregation in recognizing, preventing, and treating dental crowding issues. This activity involved 34 members of GBI HMJ Jakarta, consisting of administrators and the community. The educational material provided consists of the causes, effects, prevention, and treatment of crowded teeth. The training materials include simulations on how to brush teeth and use dental floss. The evaluation of the activity implementation shows an increase in knowledge with a significant difference in the average pre-test and post-test scores (p=0.000). This increase in knowledge is expected to reduce the negative impact of dental and oral health issues, particularly crowded teeth, in the community.

Abstract

Malocclusion is a functional disorder that can negatively impact a person’s physical and emotional health, often requiring treatment. The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia is approximately 80% of the total population, making it a significant dental health issue. According to the Health Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Balitbangkes RI), the highest prevalence is found in the 12-15 age group, at 15.6%. Orthodontic treatment aims to correct improve function, facial aesthetics, and occlusal contact. The need for treatment can be assessed using the Orthodontic Treatment Needs Index (IKPO), which evaluates the severity of malocclusion based on three variables: knowledge, awareness, and willingness. Demographic factors such as gender, age, economic status, and administrative region can influence access to orthodontic services. Differences in demographic characteristics can lead to differences in knowledge, attitudes, and actions towards dental health, including malocclusion. It is important to improve education about oral health and ensure equal access to orthodontic treatment, especially in underserved areas.

Abstract

Introduction: Conditions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) are affected by changes in movement and load during the joint’s function, which can cause morphological changes in hard tissues, such as the condyle. Panoramic radiographs can provide an indication of changes in hard tissues in TMJ. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine whether there was any correlation between mandibular condyle shapes as seen on panoramic radiographs and TMJ conditions in adult female participants. Methods: The participants of this study were 75 adult female patients who underwent a panoramic radiograph examination conducted at the Maranatha Dental Hospital Radiology Unit. The patients were clinically examined based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Clinical Temporomandibular Disorder (RDC/TMD) questionnaire and also their panoramic radiographs. The data from the patients were categorized into four groups according to the RDC/TMD: normal, muscle disorders, disc displacement, and other joint diseases. Next, the radiographs were analyzed by two observers to determine the condyle shapes. Condyle shapes were classified into four groups: ovoid, flat, erosion, and osteophyte. Result: This study showed that of 75 patients, the right TMJ was normal in 34 patients, 2 patients had muscle disorders, 24 demonstrated disc displacement, and 15 had other joint diseases. For the left side of the TMJ, 22 radiographs were normal, 2 revealed muscle disorders, 35 identified disc displacement, and 16 showed other joint diseases. There was a strong agreement between the two observers in determining the right (κ=0.681) and left condyle shapes (κ=0.652). All participants’ findings indicated that condyle shapes and TMJ conditions are highly correlated for both the right (η2=0.889) and left condyle (η2=0.762). Conclusion: This study concluded that mandibular condyle shapes seen on panoramic radiographs and TMJ conditions in adult female participants were highly correlated.
