Abstract

Abstract

This case study aimed to find out the implementation of a genre pedagogy under systemic functional linguistics (SFL) framework or under Sydney School to teach the English language to young English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners of English Village of Parit Baru, Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan. Fifty-two young EFL learners were involved in this study. The data collection used two instruments, namely participant observations and documentation. The data analysis reveals that genre pedagogy elements could help the young EFL learners in constructing and communicating their texts independently. Also, the learners’ texts are following the schematic structures and linguistic features of the spoken genres the learners learned. To help the learners to cope with the teaching activities, songs and games activities were used to build their interest in the English language, new vocabulary, and practices to communicate their texts. This means that a genre pedagogy under the SFL framework could be integrated with joyful activities that not only provide guidance but also promote enjoyable learning in building the English language capacities of the young EFL learners in a non-formal educational context.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate classroom learning practices, identify the challenges faced by teachers, and gather information regarding their readiness during the teaching and learning process in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in junior high schools in West Kalimantan. This curriculum provides opportunities to enhance creativity and flexibility in learning. The study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive approach, in which participants were selected purposively, consisting of 20 English teachers—10 from urban schools and 10 from rural schools. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data were analysed using Miles and Huberman’s principles, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings show that most teachers have implemented the Merdeka Curriculum, with 80% implementation in urban schools and 40% in rural schools. Teachers encountered several challenges, including limited supporting facilities, inadequate access to technology, and uneven human resource capacity. The results also indicate that most teachers feel ready to implement the curriculum, although their levels of readiness are not uniform. Nevertheless, evaluations from various stakeholders play a significant role in enhancing the successful implementation of this curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of technology in English language learning based on the perspectives of teachers and students at SMA Negeri 2 Selakau. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative with data triangulation techniques through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The results showed that teachers used various technological tools such as PowerPoint, learning videos, interactive applications (Kahoot, Quizizz), and digital dictionaries to increase students' engagement and understanding. Students show higher interest and motivation when learning using technology, especially through audio-visual media and video-based assignments. However, some challenges were also found, such as limited infrastructure, low digital literacy, and technical glitches during learning. Teachers' and students' perspectives generally indicate that technology has great potential in improving the effectiveness of English language learning, but it needs to be supported by adequate training and facilities. This research makes a contextual contribution to the understanding of technology integration in language education in rural Indonesia. In conclusion, the integration of technology in English classrooms, while beneficial and motivating for both teachers and students, requires adequate support, training, and infrastructure to ensure its sustainable and effective implementation in rural educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the level of students' interest in learning English at a public primary school in Ngabang in the academic year 2025/2026. This research employed a quantitative descriptive survey design. The population of this study consisted of sixth-grade students. The sample was selected using a total sampling technique, involving all students as participants. The instrument used in this study was a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 14 items. After conducting a pilot test, two items were found to be invalid and excluded. This resulted in 12 valid items used in the main data collection. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean scores and percentages. The findings showed that the overall mean score of students' interest was 3.44, which was categorized as "Very High". Based on the two measured aspects, namely knowledge of English and need for English, the results indicated that students possessed adequate basic knowledge and strong curiosity toward learning English. However, their exposure to the language outside the classroom was relatively limited. Furthermore, students demonstrated a high perception of the importance of English for their future, including education, communication, and career opportunities. In conclusion, students at a public primary school in Ngabang exhibited a very high level of interest in learning English. This finding suggests that students are psychologically ready to learn English despite limited(Schiefele, 1991) external exposure. Therefore, English teachers and school administrators should provide more interactive learning activities and increase exposure to support the learning process.

Abstract

Children residing in the Juvenile Correctional Facility (LPKA) generally experience school dropout, low literacy levels, and limited access to educational opportunities that promote empowerment. These conditions negatively affect their academic abilities, learning motivation, and self-confidence. This community service program was implemented to enhance basic English proficiency while simultaneously fostering creative expression through an integrative learning model that combines experiential language activities with creativity-based tasks. The results of the pre-test and post-test indicate substantial improvement: vocabulary mastery increased by 63%, the ability to construct simple sentences improved by 61%, and the use of functional expressions rose by 65%. Observations and interviews further revealed positive changes in learning attitudes, motivation, and students’ willingness to participate actively. Creative skills also improved significantly, with 80% of participants able to produce English mini posters, 75% successfully developing story cards with clear narrative sequences, 60% capable of presenting their work orally, and 80% demonstrating positive expressions and enthusiasm throughout the activities. These findings suggest that creativity-based language learning not only enhances linguistic competence but also strengthens emotional resilience and self-expression. Overall, the program serves as an effective empowerment strategy for juvenile residents, supporting their academic, psychological, and social development.
