Abstract

This research evaluates the efficacy of the discovery learning method in enhancing reading comprehension for tenth-grade students at SMK Mandiri Pontianak in the academic year 2023/2024. Employing a pre-experimental design, the sample for this study was chosen from the TKJ A class using cluster random sampling. The data collection process included both pre-tests and post-tests. Findings indicated a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension through the implementation of the discovery learning method, evident in the transition from a pre-test score of 61 (averaged) to a post-test score of 83 (excellent Statistical analysis through the t-test validated a noteworthy distinction (a < 0.05), affirming the dismissal of the null hypothesis (H0). This signifies a statistically significant enhancement in reading comprehension following the implementation of the discovery learning method.

Abstract

English lessons are not compulsory in public elementary schools. It makes English a challenge for students in Indonesia's foreign language communication from an early age. This study aimed to find student worksheets and fun learning strategies, including singing and mentoring activities, to be implemented in teaching English to students. This research includes case study research. This study used a sampling technique to select five fifth-grade students who participated in this program. Data collection was carried out using participant observation techniques, and the documents included were student worksheets, photos, and activity videos. Data analysis techniques using thematic analysis techniques. The study results show that student worksheets and fun learning strategies can help students in English Village learn English through all teaching stages. It was concluded that alternative learning in the form of English Village using student worksheets and fun learning strategies had been proven to help students learn English by providing brief material that is clear and easy to understand.

Abstract

Tujuan kegiatan bimbingan teknis ini adalah mengenalkan, membangun minat, memberikan pengetahuan, melatih keterampilan para guru mengajarkan teks prosedur bahasa Inggris kepada siswa menggunakan metode sulap, dan memberikan bukti kegiatan kepada para peserta. Bimbingan teknis ini dilaksanakan di Kampus IKIP PGRI Pontianak selama satu hari, diikuti sembilan belas guru, dan dilaksanakan dengan metode andragogy, yang menggabungkan lokakarya dengan demonstrasi, praktik, simulasi, dan refleksi. Semua kegiatan dilaksanakan di ruang kelas. Evaluasi proses dan hasil lokakarya dilakukan melalui observasi partisipan dan wawancara. Dari evaluasi tersebut diperoleh hasil bahwa selama kegiatan lokakarya, semua peserta antusias dalam mengikuti bimbingan teknis. Pada akhir kegiatan, para peserta memiliki minat yang tinggi dan pengetahuan dasar yang cukup mengenai metode sulap serta dapat mempraktikkan dan melaksanakan simulasi mengajar dengan prosedur teks dalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan metode sulap.

Abstract

True and false is the implementation of game that can be played in groups or individually which is students answer questions by answering True or False. This research aimed to determine the implementation of true and false game in English Village of Parit Baru and the effects of implementation true and false game in studi independen at English Village of Parit Baru. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach. The researcher used a interviews, questionnaire, observation and document as tools of data collection. The subject of this research was student at English Village of Parit Baru. The researcher used data reduction, data display and draw a conclusion to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that the implementation true and false game was successfully regarded. Although it has only been applied a few times and we don’t know the result of students learning outcomes accurately but we know that students are have fun, enjoy learning and increase students enthusiasm. This research has the potential to be further developed as a classroom action research.

Abstract

The Effectiveness of Storytelling Technique in Public Speaking Subject of Second Semester Students (A Pre-Experimental research at the English Education Study Program Students of IKIP PGRI Pontianak). Supervised by Dr. Diah Astriyanti, M.Pd  and Maliqul Hafis, M.Pd. Language and Art University of Teacher Training and Education Institute of the Republic of Indonesia Teachers Association Universitas PGRI Pontianak 2024. This study aims to determine how well students in the second semester of public speaking employ the storytelling strategy University PGRI Pontianak. This study used pre-experimental research, in collecting the data, the researcher used the pre-test and post-test for tools of data collection with the use of test instructions of speaking. Second semester students majoring in English were population of this research with a total of 93 consisting of A Morning 26 students, B Morning 36 students, and A Afternoon 31 students. This research use cluster random sampling. A regional sampling method called cluster random sampling is used to choose samples when the subject of the study or the data source is relatively large. The researcher inspect the homogeneity sample with the same criteria and conducts the same batch, and same study program. The results of this research indicate that the storytelling method is effective and important for public speaking students. Students obtained an average score of 48.97 before the test and increased to 85.32 after using the storytelling method. Based on the table, the sig value. two tails is 0.01 and the sig value. two tails less than 0.05, which indicates that there is a significant difference between learning outcomes before and after the test. Therefore, it can be concluded that learning using the storytelling method is effective in increasing students' speaking ability scores. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted: the grades of second semester students at IKIP PGRI Pontianak change after using the storytelling method.

Abstract

This research aims to assess English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching practices in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum and identify challenges faced by teachers in applying it at the secondary school level. The research employed a case study approach with interviews as the data collection instrument, involving one curriculum teacher and one English teacher at SMPS PGRI 1 Sungai Raya Kepulauan. The findings show that teachers have developed a basic understanding of the curriculum that allows them to apply it, although not comprehensively. Teachers adopt student-centered approaches and integrate technology in the classroom, aligning with the core principles of the Merdeka Curriculum. The main challenges identified include the lack of specific training related to curriculum implementation, difficulties integrating existing pedagogical approaches with the demands of the new curriculum, and student adaptation to new learning methods. Despite facing challenges, teachers have demonstrated resilience and adaptability in implementing the curriculum relatively effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the gaps and needs in implementing the Kurikulum Merdeka in English language teaching at the senior high school level. A qualitative method was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal several key gaps, including limited learning facilities, insufficient teacher understanding of the curriculum and differentiated assessment, low student engagement and readiness, and challenges in aligning assessments with Learning Outcomes. Additionally, the use of technology and teacher training remain suboptimal. This study recommends targeted professional development, improved access to learning resources, and stronger institutional support to ensure the effective implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

 The purpose of this research was to determine whether the use of Powtoon media is effective or not in teaching vocabulary and to assessthe effect of the Powtoon media in teaching vocabulary to grade VIII A students of SMPN 1 Kendawangan. This study uses a quantitative method, specifically a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test. The subjects in this study were 24 eighth-grade A students at SMPN 1 Kendawangan. In this study. the measurement technique was used to collect data through tests. Pre-test and post-test assessments were given to collect data from students. The collected data analysis using descriptive statistics with SPSS for Windows version 24. The paired sample test analysis was used to test the hypothesis. In addition, Cohen's effect size was used to evaluate the impact of using the PowtoonMedia in teaching vocabulary.The research findings of the study showed the effectiviness of the Powtoonmedia in teaching vocabulary to eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kendawangan. This was evidenced by the differences observed in the mean scores between the pre-test (48.75) and post-test (72.70), indicating a positive change after the treatment. The standard deviation pre-test (8.75) and the post-test (7.79). Furthermore, the sample t-test of 17.380 and the degrees of freedom (df) 23. This result allows us to reject the null hypothesis (Ho) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha). In conclusion, PowToon media is effective in teaching vocabulary. The effect size. based on the Cohen effect, was determined to be 1.44, indicating a strong effect of the Powtoon media in teaching vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of technology in English language learning at SMP Negeri 13 Pontianak from the perspectives of teachers and students. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilizing observation, semistructured interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. The research instruments included an observation sheet to record the use of technology in the classroom, interview guidelines to explore the perceptions and experiences of teachers and students, and a documentation checklist to gather relevant teaching materials and media. The participants consisted of one English teacher and five eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The data collected were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, which involves six steps: familiarizing with data, generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the final report. The findings revealed that technology such as Kahoot, projectors, and mobile devices effectively enhanced students’ motivation, engagement, and understanding of the learning material. Both the teacher and students expressed positive attitudes toward technology integration in the classroom. However, several challenges were identified, including limited school infrastructure,  unstable internet connectivity, and varying levels of digital literacy among students. This study recommends continuous teacher training and improvements in school facilities to optimize technology-based learning. Abstract

This research aims to identify the challenges faced by teachers and schools while implementing Kurikulum Merdeka, as well as the strategy and support needed by teachers and schools in implementing Kurikulum Merdeka in the border area of Indonesia. This research used a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews and a questionnaire. Thematic analysis and statistical descriptive methods were employed to analyze the data. The research took place in Temajuk village, Paloh sub-district, Sambas regency, specifically at SMP N 4 Paloh and SMA N 2 Paloh. The subject included both school principals and five selected teachers from each school. This research was conducted on March 14, 2025. The principals were interviewed, followed by a questionnaire distribution to the selected teachers. The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis and statistic descriptive technique. The research results show that SMA N 2 Paloh still faces the limitation of supporting facilities and the teachers' understanding due to a lack of special training. The schools have shown efforts to achieve maximum implementation through the optimization platform PMM and the teachers' study group. While SMP N 4 Paloh is still faced with the limitation of teachers' understanding, an inadequacy of training, and the limitation of supporting infrastructure. The infrastructure improvement and an in-depth training will certainly help the effectiveness of the Implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka in the border area.
