Abstract

Background: Probiotics are living microorganisms which when given in sufficient quantities will provide health benefits to humans. The role of probiotic bacteria in the oral environment is to prevent attachment of pathogenic bacteria, produce antimicrobial substances, activate and regulate the immune response. Today probiotics are recommended for oral health maintenance and management of oral diseases, one of which is Oral Candidiasis. The purpose of this paper is to describe the potential of probiotics in the management of Oral Candidiasis.Method: Systematic literature review used literature search methods in electronic databases: Google Scholar, Science Direct, and PubMed. The keywords were "lactobacillus", "oral candidiasis", and "probiotic". The inclusion criteria for selection of scientific articles were years of publication from 2010 to 2018; in vitro and clinical trials; published in English and full paper available. Out of 86 articles that have been screened, eleven articles have been included in this review.Result: The articles showed the potential use of probiotics in non-clinical trials as well as clinical trial in management of oral candidiasis in various age groups, and supports the treatment with no side effects. Mechanisms of probiotic action are known to have the potential to inhibit and reduce candida spp. in the oral cavity. Conclusion: Probiotics have the potential as antifungal agent in the prevention and therapy of oral candidiasis

Abstract

Background: Oral mucosal lesions in children caused by nutritional problems, dental infection, poor oral hygiene and trauma. Oral health in children as the next generation of the nation should always be maintained. However there is still lack of data on the emergence of oral mucosal lesions in Indonesian children. Purpose. To describe an overview of the caries experience, Haemoglobin/Hematokrit (Hb Ht), weight (BB) and height (TB) in children aged 6-7 years in several elementary schools at Tanjungsari, Sumedang.Result: 44 of 137 students who had oral mucosal lesions, had completesupporting data. Total of 43 students had an average caries experience of 8.4 teeth/child (1-17 teeth/child), while 1 student was caries-free. The average of weight = 19.3 kg, height = 115.5 cm, and Hb/Ht = 12.5/36.5%. Oral lesions found were plaques on the tongue, ulcers, macules, nodules, pustules and desquamatives.Discussion: The condition of untreated dental caries can cause pain anddiscomfort, so the child will have difculty eating and interfere with the growth process. This can be seen through the child’s caries experience with data on weight and height. Tooth decay affects the nutrient intake and was estimated to lead to a decrease in Hb/Ht. Oral mucosal lesions due to trauma and poor oral hygiene were not expected to affect systemic conditions.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the caries experience was very high, the average value of weight and height were normal below the ideal, Hb/Ht levels within normal limits, while Coated tongue was the common diagnosis found from subjects

Abstract

Inflamasi dermal, misalnya jerawat (acne vulgaris), secara tradisional, sering diobati menggunakan tanaman, sehingga beberapa riset mengeksplorasi ekstrak tanaman secara in vitro. Namun demikian, penggunaan ekstrak tanaman sebagai obat topikal tetap harus mengikuti Peraturan Kepala Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan No. 32/2019 tentang PERSYARATAN KEAMANAN DAN MUTU OBAT TRADISIONAL, yang meliputi tiga aspek yaitu keamanan (safety), mutu (quality), dan efektif (efficacy). Lebih lanjut lagi, keamanan obat topikal dipastikan melalui Uji Toksisitas Akut Dermal, seperti tercantum di dalam Peraturan Kepala Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan No. 7/2014 tentang PEDOMAN UJI TOKSISITAS NONKLINIK SECARA IN VIVO.  Kajian pustaka ini merangkum uji toksisitas akut dermal ekstrak tanaman yang telah dilakukan di berbagai negara. Kajian dilakukan menggunakan kata kunci “Acute”, “Dermal”, “Toxicity”, “Extract” pada basis data PubMed, dan menghasilkan 15 artikel. Hasil kajian pustaka menunjukkan bahwa semua ekstrak tanaman yang diuji di dalam kelimabelas artikel tersebut dinyatakan aman karena tidak menimbulkan gejala toksisitas ataupun kematian pada dosis di atas 2000 mg/kg BB. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa uji toksisitas akut dermal ekstrak tanaman merupakan faktor penting dalam keamanan pengembangan suatu obat herbal terstandar topikal

Abstract

Introduction: Pathognomonic symptoms often allow for the extablishment of a clinical diagnosis without laboratory-supporting examinations. This article discusses two cases of oral mucosal disease presenting with typical symptoms and pathognomonic clinical features. Through anamnesis, history taking, and physical examination led to the clinical diagnosis of primary herpetic gingivostomatitis and pseudomembranous oral candidiasis. Case report: The first case involved a 30-year-old woman with primary herpetic gingivostomatitis, characterized by multiple ulcers in the oral cavity and lips. The second case was that of a 4-year-old girl with pseudomembranous oral candidiasis, characterized by wipeable whitish plaques on the oral mucosa, which left an erythematous area. Antiviral therapy was given to the herpetic gingivostomatitis patient, while the patient wih pseudomembranous candidiasis received antifungal treatment. Significant clinical improvement was observed within 1-2 weeks following adequate treatment. Supporting examinations were not performed due to the pathognomonic clinical features. Conclusion: Primary herpetic gingivostomatitis and acute pseudomembranous candidiasis exhibit pathognomonic clinical features that are typical and generally sufficient for clinical diagnosis without laboratory-supporting confirmation.  If clinical diagnosis-based treatment results in improvement, supporting examination may not be necessary. Therefore, strict supervision from a doctor is mandatory in this situation.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The Covid-19 pandemic situation has affected community activities, work, income whichdecreased, psychological disorders such as stress, and limited accessibility to dental practice service,which is now for emergency cases only. This condition can affect oral health in the community. Thisstudy aimed to assess the oral health condition in the community during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thisstudy was implementing a cross-sectional research design. Data were obtained from onlinequestionnaires with the respondent's consent. The sample selection with inclusion criteria comprised 1960yearsoldwholivedinBandungWestJava.Theself-reportquestionnairefororalhealthassessmentwasfollowed,thepreviousresearch,byLevinetal.,2013.Ithasbeentrans-adaptedtoBahasaIndonesiaandvalidated.Respondentsofthestudywere380participants.Poororalhygienemaintenancewasthewrongfrequencyofbrushingteeth(12.1%),onlyvisitingthedentistwhenhavingatoothache(72.9%),andsmoking(7.9%).Oralhealthproblemsincludegingivalbleedingonbrushing(15.3%),toothmobility(13.2%),tooth cavities (62.9%), toothache (27.1%), and bad breath (22.6%). Most of the oral healthproblems were tooth cavities followed by toothache. The contributing factors include poor oral hygienemaintenance, improper brushing, smoking habits, and infrequent dental care. Furthermore, theaccessibility and availability of services in dental practice in the pandemic situation are limited.Therefore, it is reasonable to say that oral self-examination probably could minimize the distancingrelatedprobleminthisCovid-19pandemicsituationandbehelpfulintheearlydetectionoforalhealthproblems.KEYWORDS: assessment, Covid-19 pandemic, oral health

Abstract

Introduction: Red lesions on the oral mucosa occur due to various reasons related to the patient's condition, such as allergic reactions, autoimmune disorders, or systemic diseases. Red lesions cause pain, paresthesia, or are accompanied by erosion, thus disrupting the function and comfort of the mouth. Management of red lesions varies depending on the pathogenesis of the diagnosis and systemic conditions. This case report aims to describe the management of red lesions of the oral mucosa by considering the pathogenesis of both cases.Case: The first case is a 31 years old woman with a history of hyperthyroidism and is being treated thyrozole with a dose of 1x5 mg/day, while the second case is a 23 years old woman with a history of atopy. Both complained that the oral mucosa felt numb ,thick, and stiff, accompanied by red spots. Extraoral examination revealed dry lips in both cases and the second case was accompanied by erosion. Intraoral examination showed erythematous erosions on the upper and lower labial mucosa in both cases.Case management: the first case was given 0.025% hyaluronic acid mouthwash (3x10 ml/day), while the second case was given compound topical medication containing: lanolin, petroleum jelly, and dexamethasone (3-5x/day), as well as cetirizine tablet (1x10 mg/ day).Result: After treatment for 1 week, both patients experienced significant improvement, and after 3 weeks the lesions in both patients had healed.Conclusion Management of oral mucosal red lesions that takes into considered pathogenesis factors and systemic conditions in both cases shows satisfactory results.

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth eruption is influenced by various factors, one of them is nutritional factors. This study was aimed to obtain information regarding the relationship between the number of permanent teeth erupted with nutritional status in 6-7-years-old children. Methods: This research was cross-sectional and correlational data analysis. The study was conducted towards as much as 57 children aged 6-7 years old. The sampling method was the purposive sampling technique conducted in Tanjungsari 2 State Elementary School, Sumedang Regency. The nutritional status was calculated based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) according to age from the anthropometric measurements of body weight and height. Assessment of nutritional status was performed using the WHO Anthroplus® v1.0.4 application. Statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman correlation test and Mann-Whitney difference test. Results: The correlation test has obtained the value of ρ = 0.037, which showed a significant relationship between the number of permanent teeth erupted with nutritional status of 6-7-years-old children. The Spearman correlation coefficient has obtained the value of r = 0.277, thus showed the weak strength and positive direction of the correlation. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the nutritional status and the number of permanent teeth erupted in children aged 6-7 years old in the Tanjungsari Sub-district of Sumedang Regency. The higher the nutritional status of a child, the more number of permanent teeth erupted.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral mucosal health is part of general health that also requires attention. Research on oral mucosal in children has not widely conducted, especially in the Jatinangor sub-district as one of the educational centres in West Java.  This study was aimed to determine the most common and predicted the diagnosis or conditions of oral mucosal lesions among elementary school children. Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study. The purposive sampling method was used, in which only the fifth-grade students from the elementary school cluster near the centre of the Jatinangor sub-district were involved. The inclusion criteria were healthy condition, cooperative, able to communicate with the examiner, and obtained permission from the parent/guardian. The oral mucosal lesions were examined using disposable dental tools and a white light headlamp. Oral mucosal lesions found on examination defined as oral diseases and normal variation of oral mucosal. Results: A total of 226 students, consisting of 115 males and 111 females, were included in this study. The oral mucosal lesions found were described as follows: 100 cases of pseudomembranous plaque, 106 cases of macula, 56 cases of ulceration, 45 cases of cheek biting, and another fewer lesions. The lesions' diagnosis was coated tongue for the pseudomembranous plaque, physiologic pigmentation for the macula, aphthous stomatitis/traumatic ulcer/angular cheilitis for ulcers, linea alba for cheek biting, and others. Conclusion: The most commonly found oral mucosal lesions were macula which is diagnosed as macular hyperpigmentation, followed by pseudomembranous plaque which is diagnosed as coated tongue.
