Abstract

This research is motivated by the students' need for Social Studies (IPS) learning resources in the form of an e-book that is contextual, engaging, technology-based (utilizing Canva, Augmented Reality, and Heyzine), and integrates the local history of West Sumatra. The purpose of the research is to identify the stages of development, assess the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of the Social Studies Grade VIII e-book for the Independent Curriculum. This study employed a research and development method using the ADDIE model. The research subjects involved experts (lecturers), teachers, and students. The feasibility testing involved three experts: one in historical content, one in language, and one in media and learning resources. The subjects for testing practicality and effectiveness consisted of one Social Studies teacher and 31 Grade VIII-1 students of SMP Maria Padang, including 12 boys and 19 girls. Data collection instruments included feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative and quantitative approaches. The development of the Grade VIII Social Studies e-book followed five stages: (1) Analysis – identifying development needs through curriculum review and textbook evaluation, revealing the lack of local West Sumatran history content; (2) Design – structuring the e-book by combining national and Minangkabau history using Canva and Heyzine, and integrating HOTS and AKM-based questions via Wordwall, Quizizz, and Google Forms; (3) Development – validating the e-book with assessments from history, media, and language experts; (4) Implementation – integrating the e-book into learning activities and collecting practicality and effectiveness data from students; (5) Evaluation – gathering feedback through questionnaires to identify strengths and weaknesses. The e-book was rated as interesting, easy to use, and its interactive features (AR and Quizizz) were effective in enhancing students’ understanding of local history. Feasibility test results showed high ratings from the history expert (average score 3.44), media and learning expert (3.31), and language expert (3.78). Practicality and effectiveness tests also yielded very high scores: 3.73 from the teacher and 3.67 from students. The study concludes that the Grade VIII Social Studies e-book for the Independent Curriculum is highly feasible, practical, and effective as a supplementary learning resource that integrates local West Sumatran history and digital technology.

Abstract

The research objective is to identify primary history students' readiness to use QR code-based e-job sheets in terms of knowledge, experience, and supporting facilities. The research material consists of digital technology devices, smartphones, internet networks, electronic worksheets, QR Code applications, and an assessment of historical learning. This research applied a quantitative approach. Research respondents included significant history students at the Faculty of Social Sciences Universitas Negeri Padang from 2018 to 2022, including 140 students. Data were collected through a Google Form application questionnaire and shared with the students via WhatsApp. The data were analyzed quantitatively by using percentages and averages. General findings showed that many students were ready to use QR code-based e-job sheets, but others still needed them. The particular findings included: 1) more than half of respondents knew what the e-job sheet was, but two-thirds of them had no experience using the e-job sheet, 2) related to QR codes, it was found that half of the respondents knew what QR code was, but a part of them had no experience using QR codes, and 3) two-thirds of the respondents stated that supporting facilities such campus internet and their smartphone were unable to support the use of QR codes-based e-job sheets. QR code-based e-job sheets have become essential in optimizing digital technology in learning activities. Further research is needed to measure the effectiveness of using QR code-based e-job sheets as an alternative strategy and instrument for assessing learning outcomes in the digital era.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of students’ historical awareness regarding Minangkabau local history, particularly on the period from the Hindu-Buddhist era to the spread of Islam. Another problem identified is the limited availability of Minangkabau local history textbooks on these periods as learning resources. The purpose of this research is to analyze the need for developing a Minangkabau local history textbook covering the Hindu-Buddhist period and the spread of Islam to foster historical awareness among high school students. This study applied a mixed-methods approach involving 20 tenth-grade students and a history teacher at MAN 1 Bukittinggi. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and surveys using Google Forms, and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative results indicate a low level of historical awareness among students, with the average correct answers on knowledge tests ranging only from 5–15%. The survey also revealed that 59% of schools do not yet have Minangkabau local history textbooks on the Hindu-Buddhist period and 54% lack textbooks on the Islamic period. Furthermore, 71% of teachers and 77% of students expressed the need for local history textbooks as learning resources. Qualitative findings from observations and interviews revealed that history learning is still dominated by lecture methods and the use of general textbooks, while teachers have never used specific local history textbooks. The study concludes that the development of a Minangkabau local history textbook is highly needed as a learning resource capable of fostering historical awareness and strengthening students’ identity and appreciation of local culture.

Abstract

History learning needs to be supported by media that can visualize historical events. However, the visual media used in history learning are still lacking in variety. The purpose of this study is to analyze the need for developing history learning media in the form of digital comics to train students in understanding the causality of historical events. This study employed a mixed methods approach. The data were obtained from 36 tenth-grade students of MAN 1 Kota Bukittinggi and one history teacher. Data collection was carried out through three test items, classroom observations, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage formulas, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively. The findings of the study show that: first, students’ ability to analyze the causality (cause-and-effect) of historical events in the topic of Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms is low, as seen from the test results. A total of 69% of students answered the first question correctly, 52% the second, and 41% the third. Second, interview results indicate that technology-based visual media are still rarely used by history teachers. Third, history teachers face technical challenges in creating varied learning media, especially digital-based visual media in the form of digital comics. These findings highlight the need to develop digital comic media that can help students understand the cause-and-effect (causality) relationships of historical events related to the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that history instruction in secondary schools places a greater emphasis on national historical events, while local history is often neglected. As a result, students are less familiar with historical events in their own regions. This condition reflects students’ weak local history awareness. This study aims to analyze the need for local history teaching materials in West Sumatra, particularly regarding the Padang Area incident (1945–1946) and the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (1948–1949). The research method applied a mixed methods approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, document studies, and tests. The study subjects included one history teacher and 20 students. Data collection used question sets, observation guidelines, and interview checklists. The results showed that: 1) teachers had difficulty finding local history materials, 2) students predominantly studied national history materials, 3) supporting facilities for local history learning were still minimal, and 4) the results of the local history awareness test showed that only 34% of students were able to answer questions correctly. These findings emphasize the need to develop local history teaching materials to foster local history awareness in students.
