Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates how credit risk, profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) financing, and regional economic growth shape the profitability of Islamic rural banks in Indonesia and whether PLS portfolios and local conditions buffer the adverse effect of non-performing financing (NPF) on profitability through a moderating effect.Methodology – The analysis uses a balanced panel of 135 Islamic Rural Banks (IRBs) for 2019–2024, combining bank-level data with Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) per capita growth. Fixed-effects panel regressions with two- and three-way interactions between NPF, PLS measures (total PLS, mudharabah, musharakah), and regional growth were estimated, controlling for size, capital adequacy, efficiency, funding structure, and time effects.Findings – The results demonstrate a robust negative association between non-performing financing (NPF) and return on assets (ROA). Mudharabah-based profit-and-loss sharing (PLS), rather than aggregate PLS or Musharakah alone, attenuates the impact of NPF. Similarly, higher regional growth weakens the marginal effect of credit risk. A negative and significant triple interaction indicates that Mudharabah intensity and favorable regional growth act as substitutes rather than complements, with the strongest mitigation of the NPF effect observed at low to moderate levels of both variables.Implications – The evidence suggests that IRB managers and regulators should calibrate PLS portfolios for regional macroeconomic conditions. Understanding local growth environments can guide the PLS configurations that are most appropriate for promotion within supervisory areas.Originality – This study is among the first to jointly examine the roles of PLS contract composition and regional economic growth in the credit-risk–profitability nexus of IRBs, showing how risk-sharing finance and local business cycles interact in shaping Islamic bank performance.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the Ability–Motivation–Opportunity (AMO) model in improving employee performance through employee engagement in the banking sector in Jakarta. A quantitative approach with an explanatory research design was employed. Data were collected through a five-point Likert scale questionnaire administered to 160 banking employees selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS 4.0. The results indicate that ability, motivation, and opportunity have a positive and significant effect on employee engagement. Furthermore, employee engagement has a positive and significant effect on employee performance. The mediation analysis reveals that employee engagement significantly mediates the relationship between ability and motivation with employee performance. However, employee engagement does not mediate the relationship between opportunity and employee performance. The coefficient of determination shows that the model has moderate explanatory power, where AMO variables explain 48.7% of the variance in employee engagement, while the combination of AMO and employee engagement explains 60.7% of the variance in employee performance. These findings suggest that improving employee performance in the banking sector is not only influenced by competence and motivation but also by the level of employee engagement within the organization. This study provides practical implications for banking organizations to enhance employee performance through the strengthening of AMO-based human resource management practices and the continuous improvement of employee engagement.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital financial services has significantly influenced students’ financial behavior, particularly in managing personal finances amid limited allowances and the increasing use of paylater services. This study aims to analyze the effect of allowance constraints and paylater usage on students’ financial management, with financial literacy as a moderating variable. The population of this study consists of university students domiciled in the Greater Jakarta area (JABODETABEK). The sampling technique employed was non-probability sampling using the purposive sampling method. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with the assistance of SmartPLS 4 software. The results indicate that allowance constraints have a positive and significant effect on students’ financial management, while paylater usage does not have a significant effect. Furthermore, financial literacy has a positive and significant effect on students’ financial management. However, financial literacy does not moderate the relationship between allowance constraints and students’ financial management, nor does it moderate the relationship between paylater usage and students’ financial management. The R-square value of 0.896 indicates that the proposed model has strong explanatory power. These findings suggest that students’ financial management is more strongly influenced by allowance constraints and financial literacy than by the use of paylater services

Abstract

The study intends to evaluate the influence of peer-to-peer lending (P2P lending) on banks performance, focusing on differences in core capital classifications. Using data from the Financial Service Authority and Bank Indonesia websites, the analysis spans the fourth quarter of 2021 to the third quarter of 2023. The results reveal that P2P lending negatively affects bank performance, with more significant adverse impacts observed in banks with lower core capital, categorized under KBMI 1 and 2, compared to KBMI 3 and 4. These findings underscore the need for regulatory policies tailored to address the vulnerabilities of smaller banks, including measures to promote consolidation and capital augmentation. This study offers valuable insights into the interplay between financial technology and banking regulations, providing practical implications for policymakers and stakeholders.
