Abstract

Abstract

Diarrhea and acne, caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli and Propionibacterium acnes, are common illnesses in children and adults. Antibiotics can overcome bacterial infections, but cases of antibiotic resistance are increasing. This study aims to determine the effect of wrap leaf extract (Smilax rotundifolia) on the growth of P. acnes and E. coli. This research can support microbiology-based science learning that utilizes biodiversity for students. Phytochemical tests showed that the extract contained flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins. The results of antibacterial testing showed that wrap leaf extract was able to inhibit the growth of P. acnes bacteria from concentrations of 10% and 15% with an average inhibition of 5.31 mm and 6.42 mm, and the positive control (Amoxicillin) had an inhibition of 7.26 mm. However, E. coli did not show any inhibition zone. The Mann-Whitney test results showed that the wrapper leaf extract has antibacterial effectiveness by comparing the negative control with a concentration of 10% and 15% and the positive control with a concentration of 10%. There is a difference between the concentration comparison where the Sig.<0.05 value. Then, comparing the positive control with a concentration of 15% produces a Sig.>0.05 value, meaning there is no difference between the two.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the analgesic effectiveness of ethanol extract of Kitolod leaves (Isotoma longiflora L.) in male white mice (Mus musculus). Kitolod leaves are traditionally used as herbal remedies for pain, yet scientific evidence regarding their analgesic potential remains limited. This true experimental research employed a pre- and post-test with control group design, involving five groups: negative control (Na-CMC 1%), positive control (diclofenac sodium 50 mg), and three treatment groups administered Kitolod leaf extract at doses of 56 mg/kgBW, 112 mg/kgBW, and 224 mg/kgBW. Extract preparation was carried out using maceration with 96% ethanol, followed by phytochemical screening which confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and steroids. Analgesic activity was assessed using the tail flick method by measuring latency response to thermal stimuli at intervals of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes post-treatment. The results showed that Kitolod leaf extract increased pain response latency, with the 112 mg/kgBW and 224 mg/kgBW doses demonstrating the strongest analgesic effects comparable to diclofenac sodium. Statistical analysis using independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA indicated significant differences (p < 0.05) between treatment and control groups. These findings suggest that Kitolod leaf ethanol extract possesses promising analgesic properties and may serve as a potential natural alternative for pain management.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of three extraction methods (maceration, soxhletation, and reflux) in obtaining bioactive compounds from Red Fern (Stenochlaena palutris), which is known to have therapeutic potential. The methods used included cold extraction (maceration) and hot extraction (soxhletation, reflux) with ethanol solvent, which was chosen because of its ability to dissolve polar and nonpolar compounds. The maceration method produced the highest yield of 15.4002% with extraction for 72 hours without heating, which maintained the stability of the active compounds. In contrast, the soxhletation and reflux methods produced yields of 2% and 10%, respectively, possibly due to degradation of the active compounds due to heating. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and terpenoids in the resulting extracts. FTIR assay identified various important functional groups such as hydroxyl (-OH), alkanes, and C-O in all extraction methods. and the determination of the total alkaloid content obtained was 1.066335% while the total flavonoid content obtained was 4.652425%. So from the data it can be seen that the total Flavonoid compound is greater than the Alkaloid compound
