Abstract

The decline in traditional game practices due to the dominance of technology has hindered the cultivation of socio-cultural values and reduced opportunities for developing learning motivation and motor skills among elementary school students. This study aims to explore the socio-cultural meanings of traditional games and their roles in enhancing students’ motivation and motor skills using a qualitative method with an intrinsic case study approach. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of the principal, Physical Education teachers, and 28 fourth-grade students relevant to the issue of low traditional game practice. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning, experiences, and student interactions during play activities. The results show that traditional games can enhance enthusiasm, motivation, motor skills, cooperation, honesty, social interaction, and students’ character, supported by the role of teachers and schools in providing facilities, supervision, and learning policies. This study emphasizes the importance of traditional games as a local-wisdom-based PE learning strategy to holistically develop students’ motor, social, and affective aspects.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the effects of rondo and wall pass training on improving futsal passing accuracy in elementary school students. The method used was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, with research subjects divided into two treatment groups: the rondo training group and the wall pass training group, and a control group given paired passing treatment. The research instrument was a passing accuracy test conducted before and after the treatment, while data analysis included normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis tests. The results showed that both training methods had a significant effect on improving passing accuracy, but wall pass training was more effective than rondo training because it emphasized more on technical repetition and consistency, while rondo focused more on game aspects and teamwork. Thus, it can be concluded that wall pass training is more effective in improving futsal passing accuracy in elementary school students, although both methods can be combined to optimize technical and tactical abilities. Abstract

This research aims to analyze the practice of academic supervision carried out by school principals with non-linear educational backgrounds (non-PE) in developing the competence of Physical Education (PE) teachers at junior high schools (SMP) in Sumedang Regency. Supervision is a key instrument for keeping the quality of learning at a high level, however, the application of supervision in PE is often limited by the technical limitations of supervisors in grasping the substance of movement and sports pedagogy in the field. Qualitative data were obtained through case study designs, through in-depth interviews, observations and documentation studies in schools that have the characteristics of urban and rural areas.  The results of the analysis processed by NVivo software indicate that principal supervision is organized in four main dimensions, namely, planning, implementation, interaction dynamics, and performance impact. The findings suggest that while supervision contributes positively to the development of teachers’ pedagogical and professional competencies, its effectiveness is still limited by the dominance of one-way communication, overly generalized assessment instruments and a lack of sustainable follow-up. This study points to the need for a more collaborative and adaptive approach to clinical supervision to close the technical competency gap between principals and teachers . The novelty of this study is to provide a substantive assessment model to enable non-linear supervisors to still be able to promote teacher professionalism without need of profound technical expertise in sports.

Abstract

This research examines the coaching expedition and results of Sumedang Regency's student basketball teams in the Regional Student Sports Week (POPWIL) competition, addressing the limited historical selection and the limited global mapping of student-level sports coaching systems. The research framework is based on the importance of POPWIL as a marker of the effectiveness of regional sports coaching and as a bridge to larger competitions. The research aims to reconstruct Sumedang's student basketball coaching model, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and analyze how the changes that have occurred in an integrated manner have resulted in improved results in POPWIL. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a problem-solving approach, information was obtained through in-depth simulation interviews, monitoring of coaching areas, and analysis of documents related to Sumedang's participation in POPWIL. The research results indicate that Sumedang's basketball coaching progresses through three main stages: incidental, structured change, and networked coaching, which gradually improve the physical readiness, technical-tactical abilities, and psychological resilience of athletes. Improved coaching management, improved facilities, and strengthened coordination between schools, clubs, Perbasi (Indonesian Association of Indonesian Basketball Associations), and the Youth and Sports Agency (Dispora) contributed significantly to this development. This research concludes that Sumedang's improved results in the 2024 POPWIL (Regional Sports Week) were the result of a comprehensive, analytical, and collaborative coaching approach, not simply the result of one-off interventions. These findings provide effective links for the development of sustainable student sports coaching in other regions with similar characteristics.

Abstract

The effectiveness of freestyle swimming learning for beginner athletes aged 9–12 years is often hampered, especially in hand movements or strokes, body alignment, motor coordination, and breathing control. This study used a convergent parallel mixed-methods design to test the effectiveness of land training based on modified PVC pipes (paralon) in improving freestyle swimming techniques in beginner athletes. A total of 10 participants were divided into experimental and control groups. Qualitative data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation analyzed using NVivo 12, while quantitative data were analyzed using independent samples t-test and Cohen's d effect size. The results of the qualitative analysis identified the main obstacles to learning including body position misalignment, poor hand-foot coordination, flutter kick errors, insufficient arm thrust, inappropriate breathing patterns, and low self-confidence. Quantitatively, the experimental group experienced a significant increase in freestyle swimming performance compared to the control group (t(8) = −4.824, p = 0.001), with a very large practical effect (Cohen's d = 3.051). This finding indicates that the intervention is not only statistically significant, but also has a strong practical impact. The results of the study concluded that land training using modified PVC pipe media is an affordable, easily accessible, and highly effective teaching method for improving body position, movement coordination, breathing technique, self-confidence, and overall freestyle swimming performance in novice athletes.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the significant gap between primary schools in producing athletes for the National Student Sports Olympics (O2SN), which indicates variations in the quality of physical education instruction. This study aims to comprehensively analyse the quality of physical education learning in influencing the success of schools in developing O2SN athletes from the teachers' perspective. Using a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach, this study involved 15 physical education teachers from public primary schools in Rancakalong Subdistrict, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected over two months through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and observations, with validity ensured through triangulation, and analysed using a thematic and descriptive approach. The results, visualised through a hierarchy chart, reveal that the most dominant factors in the success of producing athletes are contextual conditions (talent identification and differentiated learning) and teacher action strategies (varied methods, motivation, and individual guidance). Teachers play a crucial role as the primary filter in identifying student potential through regular learning integrated with additional training and extracurricular programmes. Although limited facilities are a major obstacle, teachers' creativity in modifying equipment maintains instructional effectiveness. This study concludes that O2SN achievements are a systemic accumulation of pedagogical quality, students' intrinsic interest, and school support that synergises intracurricular activities with athletic development.
