Abstract

Aquaculture plays a vital role in meeting the global demand for animal protein, yet the dependency on expensive imported feed ingredients remains a significant challenge. Optimizing the use of local feed ingredients is a strategic approach to enhance sustainability and cost-efficiency in fish farming. This research aims to optimize the composition of local feed ingredients to achieve 30% protein content in farmed fish feed. The formulation involves rice bran, corn bran, fish meal, and tofu dregs, selected based on local availability and protein content. The methodology includes analysis of the protein content of raw materials, formulation testing, and physical evaluation of feed. The results show that the pellets produced have nutritional quality that meets the target, good physical stability, and cost efficiency of up to 40% compared to commercial feed. This research makes a significant contribution in supporting the sustainability of the fish farming industry and reducing dependence on imported raw materials.

Abstract

A major problem in the fisheries sector in rural areas is the high cost of fish feed, which can reach 60-70% of total production costs. Training on making natural feed based on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot is an innovative solution in reducing dependence on commercial feed. This community service activity was carried out in Tugalagawu Village, Sirombu District, West Nias Regency using a participatory approach. Activities involved lectures, discussions, and hands-on practice regarding maggot cultivation and its utilization as an alternative fish feed. The results of the training showed an increase in community knowledge and skills in maggot farming, as well as increased enthusiasm in adopting the technology to improve the efficiency of farmed fish production. The training also had a positive impact on household organic waste management and encouraged the economic independence of local communities.

Abstract

Fitoplankton dan zooplankton memiliki peran yang sangat penting dalam menjaga fungsi ekosistem perairan melalui kontribusinya terhadap produktivitas primer dan transfer energi dalam jaring-jaring makanan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji variasi spasial, komposisi taksonomi, serta interaksi ekologis komunitas fitoplankton dan zooplankton di ekosistem estuari tropis Sungai Nou, Gunungsitoli, Sumatera Utara. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada empat stasiun yang mewakili gradien estuari hingga pesisir, disertai pengukuran parameter lingkungan utama seperti suhu, salinitas, oksigen terlarut, pH, nitrat, dan fosfat. Sebanyak 13 genus fitoplankton (didominasi Skeletonema, Thalassiosira, dan Ceratium) serta 5 genus zooplankton (didominasi copepoda) berhasil diidentifikasi. Kelimpahan fitoplankton berkisar antara 5.490 hingga 6.000 ind L⁻¹, sedangkan kelimpahan zooplankton berkisar antara 1.190 hingga 2.030 ind L⁻¹. Nilai indeks keanekaragaman Shannon–Wiener (H’ = 2,20–2,54) menunjukkan stabilitas komunitas sedang hingga tinggi dengan dominansi rendah (C < 0,3). Analisis korelasi Pearson memperlihatkan hubungan positif signifikan antara kelimpahan fitoplankton dan konsentrasi nutrien (NO₃⁻ dan PO₄³⁻), serta hubungan negatif dengan salinitas, yang mengindikasikan bahwa masukan nutrien dari sungai merupakan penggerak utama produktivitas primer. Analisis PCA memperkuat temuan bahwa gradien nutrien dan salinitas menjadi faktor penentu utama struktur komunitas plankton. Dominasi diatom dan copepoda menunjukkan transfer energi yang efisien dalam jaring makanan planktonik serta menegaskan pentingnya Perairan Nou sebagai daerah pembesaran alami yang mendukung perikanan lokal. Temuan ini memberikan dasar ilmiah untuk pengelolaan perikanan berbasis ekosistem serta strategi pemantauan nutrien guna menjaga keseimbangan ekologis dan produktivitas perairan estuari tropis. Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are essential components of coastal environments and play a strategic role in maintaining the stability and sustainability of marine ecosystems. This study aimed to analyze seagrass species diversity and the role of seagrass biodiversity in supporting marine ecosystem conservation in the Nias Islands, North Sumatra. The research was conducted at three locations: La’aya Village (North Nias Regency), Fodo Waters (Gunungsitoli City), and waters near Sirombu Port (West Nias Regency), using the quadrat transect method during the lowest low tide. Data analysis included density, frequency, cover, Important Value Index (IVI), and the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′). The results identified five seagrass species, namely Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, and Thalassia hemprichii. Syringodium isoetifolium was the dominant species with the highest IVI across all study sites. The seagrass diversity index values ranged from 1.55 to 1.57, indicating a moderate level of diversity and a relatively stable community structure. These findings suggest that seagrass ecosystems in the Nias Islands are still functioning effectively and play a crucial role in supporting coastal stability, marine biodiversity, and as a scientific basis for sustainable marine ecosystem management and conservation. Keywords: coastal ecosystem; marine conservation; Nias Islands; seagrass biodiversity Abstrak Ekosistem lamun merupakan salah satu komponen penting ekosistem pesisir yang memiliki peranan strategis dalam menunjang keberlanjutan dan konservasi ekosistem laut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat keanekaragaman jenis lamun serta peranan biodiversitas lamun dalam mendukung upaya konservasi ekosistem laut di Kepulauan Nias, Sumatera Utara. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada tiga lokasi, yaitu Perairan Desa La’aya (Kabupaten Nias Utara), Perairan Fodo (Kota Gunungsitoli), dan Perairan dekat Pelabuhan Sirombu (Kabupaten Nias Barat). Metode yang digunakan adalah metode transek kuadrat pada saat surut terendah, dengan analisis struktur komunitas meliputi kerapatan, frekuensi, penutupan, Indeks Nilai Penting (INP), serta indeks keanekaragaman Shannon–Wiener (H′). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima jenis lamun, yaitu Syringodium isoetifolium, Cymodocea serrulata, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule uninervis, dan Thalassia hemprichii. Syringodium isoetifolium merupakan spesies dominan di seluruh lokasi dengan nilai INP tertinggi. Nilai indeks keanekaragaman lamun pada ketiga lokasi berada pada kategori sedang, dengan nilai H′ berkisar antara 1,55–1,57. Kondisi ini menunjukkan bahwa struktur komunitas lamun relatif stabil dan masih mampu menjalankan fungsi ekologisnya secara optimal. Keanekaragaman lamun yang masih terjaga berperan penting dalam mendukung stabilitas ekosistem pesisir, penyediaan habitat biota laut, serta menjadi dasar ilmiah dalam perencanaan pengelolaan dan konservasi ekosistem laut di Kepulauan Nias secara berkelanjutan. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate student satisfaction with student services at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Nias University. Involving 282 respondents consisting of 152 males and 130 females, this study used a Likert scale-based questionnaire to collect data. Validity and reliability tests showed all indicators were valid and reliable with a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.916. Satisfaction analysis was conducted through the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) and Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) methods, which resulted in a CSI value of 53%, indicating a good level of satisfaction although there are some aspects that need improvement. This study also identifies factors that affect student satisfaction, such as adequacy, accessibility, and quality of facilities & infrastructure, with data analysis using multiple linear regression. The results of the study are expected to provide recommendations for improving student affairs services in the future, ensuring that services remain optimal for students.

Abstract

Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is a freshwater fish that can be found throughout Indonesian waters. Snakehead fish in today's society has been associated with medicine. Snakehead fish is processed into various types of dishes and then served to sick families, especially for those who are postoperative because its content has been clinically proven in several diseases. Snakehead fish has a high protein content, especially albumin and essential amino acids, fat, especially essential fatty acids, minerals, especially zinc (Zn), and several vitamins that are very good for health. Bioactive compounds that play a role in accelerating the wound healing process are albumin, glycine, and zinc (Zn). Wound healing is highly dependent on the biochemical processes that occur in the skin involving intrinsic and extrinsic factors. This healing process will be accelerated with the help of dried extracts of Snakehead fish designed in topical forms such as creams or gels

Abstract

This community service activity aims to provide training to the community of Onozikho Village, West Gunungsitoli Subdistrict, Gunungsitoli City, regarding the cultivation of BSF (Black Soldier Fly) maggot as an alternative feed for catfish. This activity involved lecturers, staff, students of the Aquatic Resources Study Program, and the local community, held at the village hall. The training began with the provision of material on the potential of BSF maggot, followed by practical training on making maggot cultivation media. Lecture and discussion methods were applied to improve participants' understanding, which showed positive responses and active participation. The results of the activity showed that participants gained new knowledge and skills in maggot cultivation, which is expected to improve the family economy. BSF maggot cultivation is not only efficient in terms of animal feed costs, but also provides additional benefits in organic waste management. It is expected that this activity can continue with further mentoring to ensure the sustainability of maggot cultivation practices in the community.

Abstract

Silkworms (Tubifex sp.) are one of the leading natural feeds that are rich in protein, essential amino acids, and fats, and have a body size suitable for consumption by fish larvae. However, its limited availability and fluctuating quality are challenges in fish hatchery activities. This study aims to optimize the direct cultivation of silk worms in tarpaulin ponds with a field experiment approach, in order to increase the quantity as natural feed. The research was conducted at Ceria Group, Tugalagawu Village, Sirombu Sub-district, West Nias Regency, from May 27 to June 15, 2025. The methods used included the use of mud media enriched with organic materials such as bran and tofu pulp, and fermentation with EM4 to increase nutrient availability. Environmental parameters such as temperature (26-28°C) and pH (6.8-7.2) were controlled during the rearing period. The results showed that organic fermentation media was able to increase worm biomass to 80-120 g/m² with a harvest efficiency of 75%. The worms produced had visual quality and nutritional content suitable as larval feed, with potential protein content of 55-60% and fat content of 13-15%. This study concludes that local fermentation-based cultivation techniques can increase the efficiency of silk worm production while supporting natural food self-sufficiency at the coastal community level.

Abstract

Clean water quality is a fundamental component in sustaining aquatic ecosystems and supporting human life. Increasing pressures from pollution, climate change, and weak water resource management systems require integrated and sustainable environmental management strategies. This article aims to examine various aquatic environmental management strategies that support the sustainability of clean water quality through a literature review approach. The study applies a systematic literature review method by analyzing relevant national and international scientific journals focusing on ecosystem-based management, environmental technology innovations, climate change adaptation, as well as regulatory and community participation aspects. The findings indicate that ecosystem-based approaches, such as mangrove conservation and integrated coastal management, play a significant role in maintaining ecological functions and improving water quality. Furthermore, technological innovations including biofilters, membrane systems, and Internet of Things (IoT)-based real-time monitoring significantly enhance the effectiveness of water quality control and monitoring. However, challenges remain in the form of weak institutional coordination and limited community participation, which hinder effective policy implementation. Therefore, a holistic approach integrating ecological, technological, policy, and social dimensions is essential to achieve sustainable clean water management and long-term aquatic ecosystem resilience

Abstract

The highly profitable freshwater commodity in Indonesia is the dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus). In the cultivation process of catfish, feed plays a very significant role, contributing about 70% of all operational costs, with protein as the main component determining the appetite and growth of catfish. This study aims to describe the appetite response of dumbo catfish (Clarias gariepinus) to the provision of 30% protein pellet feed by observing feeding behavior and feed consumption patterns during the rearing period. The research was conducted in an observational manner at the community aquaculture pond in Hilina'a, Gunungsitoli. This study lasted for 2 months from April to May 2025. Fish were fed three times a day, and the feeding response was observed and analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the fish responded well to the feed provided, marked by a high level of enthusiasm during feeding and a stable eating pattern throughout the study period. The controlled environmental conditions also supported the fish's appetite to remain optimal. This research shows that 30% protein pellet feed can stimulate appetite and has the potential to improve the efficiency of catfish farming. Recommendations include the use of 30% protein feed along with good environmental management to achieve optimal and sustainable farming results.
