Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Efforts to manage appropriate waste need to be followed up by the community to overcome the increasingly worrying effects of waste. There are many ways to manage waste, but downstream community awareness to take concrete action still needs to be improved. One way to manage waste is to make eco-enzymes. Eco-enzyme is a fermentation process using organic household waste, such as leftover vegetables and fruit which is then mixed with water and sugar to produce a mixture that resembles compost. Education about these eco-enzymes is essential so that the general public can practice this activity in the hope that the problems arising from waste will decrease. Even so, the public still does not know about eco-enzymes despite their enormous benefits. One educational method that is quite effective for introducing eco-enzymes during a pandemic is by holding online seminars. In addition, the video challenge method via Instagram regarding waste management is also a way to increase public awareness more interestingly and can be shared with online media audiences.

Abstract

Efforts to manage waste properly require active participation from the community in maintaining the preservation and sustainability of the earth. Over the past decade, various countries, including Indonesia, have adapted their waste management system to the zero-waste principle. This system applies the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in handling waste. Household waste generated by the people of the coastal area of Jakarta, especially the Kalibaru Village, Cilincing, has created a pile of garbage that has polluted the area. Community service programs in the form of education on waste management activities with this principle need to be carried out to increase public awareness of sustainably protecting the environment. The implementation of counseling activities is carried out by presenting "Zero waste" material with a "3R" approach with the lecture method, followed by a question-and-answer session, a quiz competition, and a competition to make multi-purpose stationery containers from cardboard and paper. Educational activities and craft-making contests are expected to increase the knowledge, understanding, and creativity of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) regarding waste management and to become ambassadors for change for others in their area.

Abstract

Urbanization in Jakarta has led to the development of slum settlements characterized by poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. This environment significantly increases the risk of intestinal protozoan parasitic infections (IPPIs), which are known to cause diarrhea and adversely affect the growth and development of children—key factors in the success of Indonesia's Emas 2045 initiative. To address this, the community service team from FKIK UNIKA Atma Jaya conducted a free fecal examination program for students at a public school in the Penjaringan District, a slum area in North Jakarta. The program included several phases: preparation, education, microscopic examination, and evaluation, involving both the school and the students' parents or guardians. Diagnostic methods utilized were direct examination and a modified Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining technique. Out of 223 participants, 16.6% were found to be infected with IPPIs. The analysis revealed no significant correlation between infection rates and grade levels (p=0.106). This initiative is expected to enhance awareness among parents and students about IPPIs, leading to improved personal hygiene and sanitation practices. It also provides valuable data to authorities for assessing and formulating preventive policies against IPPIs

Abstract

Background: Scabies, also known as "kudis," is a skin disease commonly found in areas with high population density and poor sanitation, such as rural regions. This study aimed to increase the knowledge and awareness of residents regarding scabies through an educational talk show. The activity was conducted in Babakan Madang Village, Bogor, West Java, an area with a high incidence of scabies. Methods: This community engagement activity was conducted through a two-way interactive educational approach in the form of a talk show, commencing with a pre-test, followed by an expert-led interactive discussion on the identification, prevention, and treatment of scabies, a question-and-answer session, a post-test, and the provision of appropriate scabies medication to residents diagnosed with the condition. Results: The results showed a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores, indicating an improvement in residents' knowledge about Sarcoptes scabiei, the causative agent of scabies, including its symptoms and proper treatment. Conclusions: In conclusion, the talk show method proved effective in raising public awareness about scabies and equipping affected residents with appropriate treatment ointments, thereby supporting government efforts to reduce the prevalence of scabies in the region.
