Abstract

Dyes are the most common compound used in the textile industry. Dyes consisted of azo compound that is difficult to be degraded. Undegradated azo compound, such as congo red, danger for the environment. An alternative effort to handle congo red waste must be conducted. Natural zeolite/ZnO is a material that can be used to degrade congo red to be simpler compound. Based on the analysis, the characters of natural zeolite/ZnO are hexagonal wurtzite structure, particle size 24.264 nm, band gap energy 2.96 eV. The highest degradation percentage in photodegradation activity of natural zeolite/ZnO on congo red is 99.41%.

Abstract

Curcumin is an organic ligand that can be electrocatalytic. Curcumin can be coated on graphite electrodes to produce electrodes modified with curcumin (GPC). Curcumin acts as a ligand and forms complex compounds with metals. The modification process was carried out by electropolymerization. The electrochemical method characterized the electroactive area, electron transfer, and interaction between the electrode and Pb2+ metal ions. Functional groups and surface morphology were characterized using FTIR and SEM. Validation of analytical methods including linear range, sensitivity, limit of detection, limit of quantitation, precision, and accuracy. The interaction of the GPC electrode with Pb2+ follows the electrochemical adsorption process. The GPC electrode can identify the presence of Pb2+ metal ions with a range of 3.01-70.03 µM and 181-919.2 µM. The results of the analytical method validation include linear ranges of 3.125-67.400 µM and 179.334-919.5 µM; sensitivity of 3.3605 µA/µM; limit of detection of 6.07 µM; limit of quantitation of 18.39 µM; precision of 0.93%; and accuracy of 99%.

Abstract

Decision-making skills is needed in dealing with socio-scientific issues (SSI) that is developing in society. Students need to learn to make appropriate judgments, so that they were not easily manipulated or biased towards science-related issue. This paper aims to analyze the validity and reliability of the decision-making skills instrument. The research respondents were 75 high school students (female = 52, male = 23) at Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The decision-making skills instrument consists of 5 items open-ended questionnaire. Respondents were determined using the random sampling method. The validity test results showed that all of 5 items developed were valid, with Pearson product moment values between 0.572 and 0.801. The reliability test results were valid for all 5 items, with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.744. Therefore, it could be concluded that the instrument was valid and highly reliable to measure students' decision-making skills.

Abstract

Lack of understanding of students' concepts of science material. This study aims to improve students' conceptual understanding using multimedia based on local wisdom of the keris. This type of research is a quasi-experimental design using a nonequivalent control group design technique. The population in this study were class VII students, which were divided into experimental class and control class. The data collection instrument was in the form of a concept understanding test. The data analysis technique used independent sample t-test analysis. The results showed that there were differences in the effectiveness between M-Keris and conventional Multimedia on understanding the concepts of class VII students. Based on the results of the analysis which shows the value of Sig. (2-tailed) in the independent sample t test was 0.018 < 0.05. The role of multimedia elements contained in M-Keris is an important factor to build interest in learning and students' understanding of the concepts presented. Therefore, learning with M-Keris is more effective and makes it easier for students to understand the concepts given compared to other conventional multimedia. In addition, with M-Keris, the teacher's function will be fully as a facilitator who directs and helps students explain things that have not been understood. The implication of this research is that teachers are expected to be able to use M-keris in the learning process. So as to improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Based on the needs analysis, it is indicated that students’ chemical literacy and scientific attitudes at SMA Negeri 1 Bayung Lencir remain low. The cause was the limited availability of chemistry learning resources that are contextualized to real life. Therefore, this study aimed to know the characteristics, feasibility, and practicality of developing student worksheet products based on Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) on the chemical bond topic and its influence on students’ chemical literacy and scientific attitudes. The type of this study is Research and Development (R&D) with the 4D development model by Thiagarajan. In the Define stage, a needs analysis was conducted; in the Design stage, the initial design of the worksheets was created; in the Develop stage, SSI-based student worksheets were produced after undergoing validation; and in the Disseminate stage, the SSI-based student worksheets were distributed to a class of X students at SMA Negeri 1 Bayung Lencir. The results showed that the student worksheet was produced in printed form, was feasible for use, practical, and there was a significant difference in students’ chemical literacy. However, no significant difference was observed in students’ scientific attitudes. Further research is recommended to develop SSI-based worksheets for other abstract chemistry topics and to explore their influence on students' scientific attitude.

Abstract

This study investigates the interest in science and scientific habits of mind among high school students in West Kalimantan Province. It examines the relationship between these two factors and explores differences based on gender and school status. The study used a survey method, involving 38 schools from six districts selected through a two-stage cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected via questionnaires with 22 statements on interest in science and 32 on scientific habits of mind. Results indicated that both male and female students showed good levels of interest in science, with private school students displaying higher interest than public school students. Similarly, scientific habits of mind were higher among private school students. A moderate relationship between interest in science and scientific habits of mind was found. Male students showed a significantly higher interest in science, but no significant gender difference in scientific habits of mind, though males scored slightly higher on average. Significant differences were also found when comparing interest in science and scientific habits of mind simultaneously between genders and school statuses, with males and private school students outperforming their counterparts.       Keywords: gender, interest in science, school status, scientific habits of mind. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i2.pp765-783
