Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Malocclusion is a common oral disorder that strongly correlates with orthodontic treatment needs (OTN), however the complete picture of OTN remains unclear. This bibliometric study was conducted to develop a complete picture of the OTN from 1974-2022. The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of scientific research pertaining to orthodontic treatment needs Methods: Type of study was bibliometric analysis. The term "orthodontic treatment need" was used to search for relevant articles in the Scopus database. VOSviewer, OpenRefine, and Tableau Public were used to illustrate the contributions of authors, journals, institutions, countries and the co-occurrence analysis and references analysis of the keywords. Result: There were 890 publications produced as a result of this study. Richmond emerged as the author with the most extensive publication record, having authored a remarkable 21 pieces that garnered a cumulative total of 524 citations.  The analysis reveals that the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States emerged as the primary contributors to literature pertaining to the assessment of orthodontic treatment necessity. The analysis of keywords revealed the occurrence of seven distinct clusters, which are: Index of Orthodontic Treatment (IOTN), orthodontic treatment, quality of life, orthodontic, malocclusion, and oral health-related quality of life. The largest cluster identified in the study was "malocclusion," encompassing factors such as prevalence, the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), treatment necessity, and the need for orthodontic intervention. Conclusion: In general, the number of articles addressing the need for orthodontic treatment has increased, particularly in the third and fourth decades. In the fourth decade, there were more articles about the IOTN that contained keywords directly related to the index, as well as self-esteem, quality of life, and its socio-demographic and socio-economic status correlation. KEYWORDSorthodontic treatment need; malocclusion; bibliometric; quality of life.

Abstract

SD Negeri 01 Ciambar, Sukabumi, West Java, is one of the schools that has quite a large number of students with diverse social and economic backgrounds. Based on initial observations, many students lack awareness of the importance of maintaining dental and oral health. In addition, teachers also need to improve their understanding in guiding students to be able to apply good habits in maintaining dental and oral hygiene. The method used in this activity consists of several stages as follows: observation and identification of problems with initial observations carried out to determine the condition of students' dental and oral health and their level of understanding of dental care and interviews with teachers were conducted to determine the extent of their role in educating students about dental and oral health. Overall, this program succeeded in increasing the awareness and behavior of students and teachers of SDN 01 Ciambar in maintaining dental and oral health. It is hoped that with ongoing education, these good habits can become part of a healthy lifestyle culture in the SDN 01 Ciambar school environment. This program proves that participatory-based education and training supported by interesting methods can increase the awareness and habits of students and teachers in maintaining dental and oral health. The sustainability of the program can be improved with the support of school facilities, routine check-ups by medical personnel, and parental involvement in building a healthy lifestyle culture from an early age.

Abstract

Oral cancer is one of the malignancies whose numbers continue to increase every year throughout the world including Indonesia.  Oral cancer can be caused by multiple factors that are still unknown to many Indonesians. The WKRI Bekasi organization in collaboration with Pos Binaan Terpadu (PosBindu) Harapan Jaya has monitoring activities and early detection of risk factors for non-communicable diseases (including cancer) is a potential partner to become a cadre of education on how early detection, factors that trigger oral cancer and the role of oral hygiene in its prevention in the local community. The method chosen was counseling about oral cancer and training on how to carry out early detection in Posbindu elderly cadres. The aim is to increase the knowledge and ability of cadres to recognize abnormalities that have the potential to become oral cancer and be able to maintain oral health to prevent oral disease. The results of community service activities on cadres showed an increase in knowledge by 25 points (65%) and there was a significant difference between the level of knowledge of participants before and after training (p=0.000). In addition, cadres can demonstrate mouth-self-assessment very well and correctly under the direction of the educator team.  By training on oral cancer and how to perform oral self-examination on elderly cadres Posbindu Harapan Bekasi provides an opportunity for the community to be more aware of the development of oral cancer.
