Abstract

The second Emergency Medical Team (EMT) mission of the Indonesian Red Crescent (BSMI) to Gaza aimed to deliver direct healthcare services and medical knowledge transfer during armed conflict. A multidisciplinary team (4 specialist physicians and 1 dentist) implemented an integrative service-learning approach over 16 days (17 April – 2 May 2025) at Al Nasser Hospital, Khan Younis, through three strategies: (1) emergency medical services, (2) resident/intern education mentoring, and (3) stem cell therapy for wound care. The team managed 287 emergency cases (42% fractures, 28% deliveries, 30% infections) and trained 23 local medical staff. Key challenges included medical equipment shortages (67% unmet needs) and security instability. The service-learning collaboration effectively enhanced crisis response capacity. Urgent recommendations include: opening humanitarian corridors, sustaining team rotations, and advancing medical diplomacy.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to identify the risk factors associated with osteoporosis among urban elderly women in Depok, Indonesia. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional design and involved 110 elderly women living in Cimanggis District, Depok. Participants were selected through consecutive sampling. Data were collected through interviews using the risk factor checklist from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, and bone density measurements were obtained using heel bone ultrasound. The relationship between variables was analyzed using the Chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: The results showed that most elderly suffer from osteoporosis (77.3%). BMI and parental history of hip fracture showed a significant relationship with bone density. History of fractures after 50 years of age, height loss greater than 4 cm, comorbidities, long-term medication use (over three months), smoking, and alcohol consumption showed no significant relationship with bone density. The most influential risk factor was a parental history of hip fracture. Conclusion: The majority of elderly women have osteoporosis (77.3%). Low body mass index and a family history of hip fractures are significantly associated with lower bone density. These results highlight the need for preventive strategies and lifestyle interventions to reduce osteoporosis risk among the elderly.

Abstract

One of the degenerative conditions frequently occurring in joints is Osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a common form of joint inflammation, the most prevalent one. Individual factors such as age, gender, body mass indices, occupation, family history, injury history, and body posture can increase the risk of knee OA. Knee OA is distinguished based on etiology, namely primary and secondary. Primary knee OA is often associated with genetic factors and natural aging, while secondary knee OA is caused by injuries, structural abnormalities, or other medical conditions. The purpose is to determine the relationship between risk factors in patients with knee OA. This research employed a cross-sectional design involving 56 patients selected through a total sampling technique at Al-Fauzan Hospital. The findings of the study reveal a significant association between the onset of OA and both age (p=0.000) and body posture (p=0.000). Nevertheless, factors such as gender (p=0.535), body mass indices (p=0.705), occupation (p=0.942), family history (p=0.321), and injury history (p=1.000) exhibit no correlation with knee OA. Age emerges as the most impactful factor linked to the occurrence of OA (OR=51.358). A notable correlation exists between age and body posture as risk factors for knee OA in patients. The probability of developing OA increases by a factor of 51.358 as individuals grow older compared to their younger counterparts.

Abstract

Introduction: The increasing frequency and impact of disasters requires nurses to be adequately prepared and willing to respond. Previous studies have suggested that knowledge and skills alone are insufficient predictors of willingness to respond. This study aimed to explore factors influencing nurses’ willingness to respond to disasters beyond knowledge and skills and to identify strategies to enhance this willingness through disaster training. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was used. Data were collected from May to July 2020 through semi-structured interviews (n = 9) and focus group discussions (n = 10) involving nurses with earthquake response experiences in Indonesia. The participants were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling. Data were analyzed manually following Doyle’s qualitative descriptive approach to generate codes, categories, and themes. Results: Two major themes were identified: (1) dilemma in family matters, consisting of professional commitment, family safety, and family support; and (2) readiness to respond, including unprepared feelings and the role of disaster training. Family well-being emerged as a prerequisite for deployment, while realistic and simulation-based disaster training was perceived as essential for strengthening psychological readiness. Conclusions: Nurses’ willingness to respond to disasters is influenced not only by their knowledge and skills, but also by family related considerations and psychological preparedness. Disaster training programs should integrate family preparedness components and realistic simulation-based learning to enhance nurses’ readiness and willingness to respond effectively.

Abstract

Background: Ankle sprain is a musculoskeletal injury with the highest incidence rate in the world. Risk factors for ankle sprain are age, gender, sport, anatomical abnormalities, and body mass index (BMI). There is still contradiction as to whether gender is a risk factor for ankle sprain. Furthermore, there has been no research on ankle sprain regarding members of the Police Force as a risk factor. Objective: This research aims to determine the relationship between patient profile and acute ankle sprain at Pusdokkes Polri Bhayangkara Tertiary Hospital. Methods: This study took 124 research subjects, with consecutive sampling analysis, was an observational analytic study with a cross sectional research design involving patients diagnosed with ankle sprain in 2022 – 2023 at Pusdokkes Polri Bhayangkara Tertiary Hospital who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result: As many as 79% of the subjects were aged 19 – 44 years (p=0.333). It was found that 52.4% of the subjects were male (p=0.944). As many as 46% of the subjects were members of the Police Force (p=0.181). Conclusion: Age, gender, and occupation had no significant association with the incidence of acute ankle sprain in this research. Male police officers aged 45 – 59 years have a higher risk of experiencing acute ankle sprain. The implication of this study is to prevent at-risk groups and/or ankle sprain patients.
