Abstract

This study explores the integration of ethnoscience into chemistry education by using the traditional shrimp paste production process in Meranti Islands Regency, Riau, Indonesia as a contextual learning resource. The research method used a qualitative descriptive case study approach, with data collection involving field observations, in-depth interviews with five shrimp paste producers (ethnographic data), and a review of scientific literature (scientific data). The findings indicate that the shrimp paste production process still heavily relies on inherited local knowledge and involves several stages: sorting and washing, crushing, molding, fermentation, drying, and heating over a fire. Each of these stages contains chemical aspects that can be analyzed through various approaches: a macroscopic approach (examining physical and chemical changes such as color, aroma, and texture), a submicroscopic approach (focusing on molecular and enzymatic interactions), and a symbolic approach (exploring chemical reactions such as hydrolysis, fermentation, and Maillard reactions). Furthermore, the study reveals that the community’s knowledge of the shrimp paste production process is supported by scientific principles, as documented in the literature. The results suggest that shrimp paste production not only contributes to the local economy and cultural preservation but also holds significant potential for enhancing students’ scientific literacy through an integrated chemical representation approach. The integration of these three levels of chemical representation is expected to provide students with a holistic and applied understanding of chemical concepts.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an assessment instrument grounded in Wiggins and McTighe’s Six Facets of Understanding and to examine its feasibility through expert validation and classical item analysis. The study employed a research and development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The development process in this study was conducted up to the Development stage. Expert validation (three validators) indicated that the instrument was highly valid in terms of construction (94%) and achieved perfect validity for content/material and language aspects (100%). A small-group trial also showed positive user responses, with high readability (91%) and adequate time allocation (74%). Teachers’ responses indicated very high ratings for relevance/fit (100%), language clarity (87.5%), and usefulness (95.83%). Item analysis showed that all 10 items were valid, and the instrument demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.846). The difficulty indices were moderate, and most items showed acceptable-to-good discrimination. Overall, the developed instrument is feasible to proceed to the Implementation stage in future research. Keywords:       alternative assessment; learning outcomes; Merdeka Curriculum (Independent Curriculum); chemical equilibrium.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how an ethnoscience-based durian acid product-development project functions as a PCK-driven creative learning environment for prospective chemistry teachers and to analyze creativity across elaboration, originality, problem solving, and synthesis. A Classroom Action Research (CAR) design with an embedded mixed-methods approach was employed involving 68 fifth-semester pre-service chemistry teachers at the University of Riau. The intervention integrated Project-Based Learning (PjBL) stages—orientation, planning, implementation, and evaluation—within Plan–Act–Observe–Reflect cycles. Data were collected using creativity questionnaires, classroom observations, and interviews, and triangulated to validate findings. Results showed high agreement (74–93%) across creativity dimensions during orientation–implementation, supported by observed evidence of detailed planning, novel product ideas, and iterative troubleshooting. However, more neutral responses emerged during evaluation, indicating difficulties in evidence-based reflection and conceptual integration. The core chemistry concepts addressed included fermentation chemistry, pH interpretation, solution dilution, and acid strength comparisons. Triangulation was generally convergent, with partial divergence in originality during evaluation due to discrepancies between self-perceived novelty and observed pedagogical innovation. These findings suggest that ethnoscience-enriched PjBL effectively promotes creative PCK development, but requires structured scaffolding to strengthen data-driven justification and synthesis during reflective evaluation.
