Abstract

Coliform bacteria are a group of bacteria that originate from human and animal feces in large numbers, so they are often used as indicators of food and water quality. This study aims to determine the condition of the aquatic environment based on biological indicators such as the abundance of coliform bacteria in river water and wells in Hu'u sub-district, Dompu district. Data on coliform bacteria and water quality were sourced from PT STM based on the survey results of PT Intertek and PT Sucofindo in several rivers and wells in 2021. The results of data analysis show that most rivers have coliform bacteria density values exceeding the quality standards set by the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health. This is probably because many residents and cattle still dispose of their feces in the river.

Abstract

Coral reefs are under pressure from climate change and various factors, putting them at risk of a decline in resilience. This heightened vulnerability increases the likelihood of reaching a tipping point with the next shock or stressor. Identifying early warning indicators for tipping points is crucial for proactive coral reef management. Therefore, this study aims to comprehend the coral reef health parameters considered important and feasible for collection by local stakeholders, as well as identify factors facilitating the implementation of a community-based monitoring and early warning system in a fishers-dominated community. The approach used was Participatory Action Research. The results reveal twelve priority parameters deemed necessary by the local community and feasible for collection by local stakeholders, including the local community, university, and non-governmental organization. The identified parameters are: coral bleaching, visibility, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, current, coral percent cover, fish community, macroalgal canopy cover and composition, benthic composition, and plankton. Interpretive structural model and MICMAC analysis show nine enabling factors supporting the development of a community-led coral reef health monitoring and early warning system. These factors include team motivation, training and team capacity, connection with government, connection with university, facilitation by NGOs, supporting regulations, operational funds, access to equipment, and operation and maintenance of equipment. Team motivation stands out as the most influential factor, with strong driving power and dependence, making it crucial to manage as actions on it will have ripple effects on other factors.

Abstract

Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance, including wave attenuation, preventing erosion, providing habitat for various species, and storing carbon to mitigate climate change. However, mangrove ecosystems are currently facing serious degradation threats due to human activities and climate change, necessitating protective measures, rehabilitation, and active community participation to ensure their preservation. This community service initiative aims to conserve mangrove ecosystems through nursery activities (nursery) and mangrove planting (out-planting) in potential areas not yet populated by mangroves in Siung Village, Sekotong, West Lombok. The nursery activities include techniques for collecting seedlings from the wild, selecting and sorting healthy seedlings, placing them in planting media, and caring for the seedlings. Meanwhile, the out-planting activities involve planting the seedlings in the wild and monitoring the planted mangroves to ensure their survival. Over approximately two months, this project has produced 3,200 mangrove seedlings of Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Ceriops tagal species, with a survival rate of 87.5%. As for the out-planting activities, 2,700 mangrove seedlings have been successfully planted in areas near the nursery site. Challenges encountered during seedling collection and care include tidal fluctuations, the presence of pests and predators. In the out-planting activities, ongoing monitoring and maintenance are required to maintain a high survival rate for the seedlings planted in the wild.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are a vital form of aquatic ecosystem that significantly contribute to maintaining carbon balance in the atmosphere and support climate change mitigation efforts. Their ability to absorb and store carbon in both biomass and soil makes them among the most effective carbon sinks. This study aims to estimate the carbon storage of mangrove stands in the Gita Nada Mangrove Area, Sekotong, West Lombok. The research was conducted at three stations: Station 1 (Berambang), Station 2 (Siung), and Station 3 (Bangko-Bangko). Data collection involved a 10 x 10 meter transect, where species and diameter at breast height (DBH) data were recorded. Allometric equations were then applied to calculate biomass and carbon reserve values. The results identified four mangrove species: Rhizophora mucronata, R. stylosa, R. apiculata, and Avicennia marina. The average mangrove density at each station fell within the moderate to dense category, with values ranging from 1000 to 4666.66 individuals per hectare. The estimated carbon stocks of the mangrove stands were as follows: Station 1 had 149.33 tons per hectare, Station 2 had 28.38 tons per hectare, and Station 3 had 476.36 tons per hectare. These findings indicate significant differences in estimated carbon stock values across the stations. Overall, the results of this study provide crucial information to support conservation and restoration efforts for mangrove ecosystems in West Lombok, enhancing understanding of the role of mangroves in mitigating climate change.

Abstract

Abstract

Plastic waste is a pollution problem in coastal areas, and this issue has become a global concern that requires serious attention, especially for archipelagic countries like Indonesia. This community service program aims to reduce plastic pollution at Elak-Elak Beach, West Lombok, and raise environmental awareness among the local community. Conducted in September 2023, the program involved the participation of nearly 200 students and 12 lecturers from the Marine Science Program at the University of Mataram, along with several local community members. Through scheduled beach clean-up activities, the program successfully collected approximately 10 bags, equivalent to 50-70 kg of waste, with plastic dominating the types of waste found. In addition to waste reduction efforts, the program also indirectly educated the local community about the impacts of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, successfully increasing participants' awareness after the activities. Although the program showed positive results, challenges remain in waste management and the lack of adequate facilities. Therefore, ongoing collaboration between the community, government, and relevant organizations is essential to preserve Elak-Elak Beach and educate the public on the importance of proper environmental management.

Abstract

Seagrass beds are crucial for marine ecosystems, providing habitats and food sources for diverse species while naturally protecting coastlines from erosion. These ecosystems play a pivotal role in stabilizing sediments, filtering pollutants, and acting as carbon sinks, which helps mitigate the effects of climate change. Their significance extends to supporting ecotourism and providing essential services to coastal communities, thereby promoting environmental conservation awareness. Saleh Bay, designated as a marine nature reserve, exhibits rich marine biodiversity across its five distinct zones: core, utilization, sustainable fisheries, non-conservation, and other zones. This study aimed a comprehensive understanding of the pivotal role played by seagrass beds in Saleh Bay's integrated ecosystem in West Nusa Tenggara. The density and percentage cover were count from three linear transects and placed perpendicularly to the coastline. Correspondence Analysis (CA) was applied to represents which species most strongly associated with specific zones. Meanwhile, Cluster Analysis was used to grouping specific zones based on the ecological characteristics. A total of eight seagrass species were identified, which dominated by Enhalus acoroides (42.15%) and closely related to Sustainable Fisheries and Utilization zones. Furthermore, the Cluster Analysis indicates that the Utilization and Sustainable Fisheries zones exhibit the highest degree of similarity (90%) based on their density characteristics. This research underscores the broader understanding of seagrass ecosystems. The high similarity between the Utilization and Sustainable Fisheries zones suggests that these areas play complementary roles in supporting the health of seagrass ecosystems. Management plans should integrate these findings to optimize resource use while ensuring ecological sustainability.
