Abstract

Mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining environmental balance, including wave attenuation, preventing erosion, providing habitat for various species, and storing carbon to mitigate climate change. However, mangrove ecosystems are currently facing serious degradation threats due to human activities and climate change, necessitating protective measures, rehabilitation, and active community participation to ensure their preservation. This community service initiative aims to conserve mangrove ecosystems through nursery activities (nursery) and mangrove planting (out-planting) in potential areas not yet populated by mangroves in Siung Village, Sekotong, West Lombok. The nursery activities include techniques for collecting seedlings from the wild, selecting and sorting healthy seedlings, placing them in planting media, and caring for the seedlings. Meanwhile, the out-planting activities involve planting the seedlings in the wild and monitoring the planted mangroves to ensure their survival. Over approximately two months, this project has produced 3,200 mangrove seedlings of Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Ceriops tagal species, with a survival rate of 87.5%. As for the out-planting activities, 2,700 mangrove seedlings have been successfully planted in areas near the nursery site. Challenges encountered during seedling collection and care include tidal fluctuations, the presence of pests and predators. In the out-planting activities, ongoing monitoring and maintenance are required to maintain a high survival rate for the seedlings planted in the wild.

Abstract

Cempi Bay is an important water area with a rich and diverse ecosystem. One crucial component of marine ecosystem that plays a major role in maintaining the balance of the marine environment is seagrass. The objective of this research is to provide critical insights into the dynamics of seagrass populations in Cempi Bay and offer an overview of the broader coastal ecosystem's condition. The research, conducted in June-July 2021 at 5 research stations, employed the transect method. At each data collection point, three transect lines were created perpendicular to the coastline. The distance between transect lines was 100 m, and each transect consisted of 10 quadrants measuring 1x1 m with a 5 m distance for each quadrant. Four seagrass species were identified: Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Halodule pinifolia, and Cymodocea serrulata. These species were found on sand substrates, with the highest total density and percentage cover observed at Station 5 (1135.22 ind/m2 and 40.74%). The results highlight the necessity for routine monitoring, mapping, and further research to comprehend seagrass population dynamics and support effective conservation policies. Implementation of recovery strategies, water quality management, and continued research support is imperative to ensure the sustainability of seagrass ecosystems and marine resources in Cempi Bay.

Abstract

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish species in the world that is not aggressive to humans, so it has become a popular tourist icon. The presence of whale sharks has become a tourist magnet and has transformed Botubarani Village from an ordinary fishing village into a bustling tourist village. However, the Covid19 pandemic has dealt a severe blow to whale shark tourism on the coast of Botubarani Village. The drastic reduction in tourists not only eliminates tourist income but also stops whale shark monitoring activities. The government's New Normal pilot is the hope for the return of whale shark tourism on the coast of Botubarani Village. Preparations for the opening of PPKM in the area of origin of tourists and the ease of domestic/foreign travel will be greeted with an increase in the quality and innovation of whale shark tourism at Botubarani Beach. In addition, the adaptation of tourism during the pandemic by utilizing the internet is quite promising so that tourism will stay alive. The Innovation Village of Botubarani develops a live broadcast of an underwater virtual cruise with whale shark objects periodically in the wild. This development is the first in Indonesia because it has never been done before. The use of underwater closed circuit television (CCTV) that can be accessed on land and integrated with the internet allows whale sharks on Botubarani Beach to be enjoyed by anyone and anywhere. Villages and communities on Botubarani Beach can receive input from ongoing tourism developments from tourists who come or virtually. Tourists may also be interested in coming after watching a live broadcast of whale sharks on the beach of Botubarani Village. In addition, live video recording of whale sharks can also be utilized by intellectuals, government and industry as part of the triple helix collaboration.
