Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a key contributor to dental caries due to its ability to form resilient biofilms. Endophytic bacteria are a promising source of natural antibiofilm agents. This study aimed to isolate and characterize endophytic bacteria from red onion (Allium cepa L) waste with potential antibiofilm activity against S. mutans. This research employed an exploratory laboratory design with descriptive and quantitative approaches. Morphological and Gram-staining analyses were conducted alongside molecular identification through 16S rRNA sequencing. Antibacterial and antibiofilm assays were performed to evaluate the biological activity of isolate EA1. Absorbance values from biofilm inhibition and degradation tests were analyzed using descriptive statistics to calculate inhibition percentages. Isolate EA1 exhibited strong biofilm degradation (77% inhibition), moderate inhibition of biofilm formation (53%), and relatively lower antibacterial activity (30% growth inhibition). Molecular analysis confirmed its identity as a member of the Enterobacter genus, closely related to E. tabaci and E. asburiae. EA1 holds significant potential as a source of novel antibiofilm compounds for controlling S. mutans. Further investigation is needed to characterize its active metabolites and evaluate its clinical applicability.

Abstract

Corn continues to be a crucial food crop in Indonesia, often serving as a rice substitute. Additionally, it holds strategic importance due to its substantial impact on economic stability. Production in Enrekang Regency has experienced fluctuations. Several factors contribute to declining corn production, one of which is the invasion of new pests that cause severe crop damage, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), known as Fall Armyworm (FAW). The pest targets the plant's growing point, potentially causing shoot failure and stunted growth, leading to reduced corn productivity. Based on this background, research is needed on the pest attack rate. The FAW on corn as part of efforts to monitor its presence. This research was conducted in Enrekang Regency, which collected field data on infestation intensity, and then integrated them with pest damage intensity assessment criteria. The observation found that FAW infestation intensity in the Cendana, Maiwa, and Enrekang Districts of Enrekang Regency ranges from low to moderate. However, the resulting damage is significant, particularly during the vegetative phase of the plants.

Abstract

This community service program aims to strengthen feed supply chain management among laying hen farmers through the cultivation of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae using organic waste as an alternative protein source. The program was implemented in Batu Mila Village, Enrekang Regency, involving 25 members of the Harapan Jaya Farmers Group. A participatory approach was employed through four stages: socialization, training, technology implementation, and mentoring. Program outcomes were evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, and the data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed improved participants' knowledge and skills in BSF cultivation, organic waste management, feed formulation, and farm business management. The established BSF production unit produced an average of 7.5 kg of fresh larvae, equivalent to approximately 1.5 kg of maggot meal per day, by utilizing 35–40 kg of organic waste daily. The program also strengthened the institutional capacity of the farmers' group through the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), production recording systems, and simple bookkeeping practices. Overall, the program enhanced farmers' capacity to utilize local resources, reduced dependence on commercial feed, and promoted the adoption of a more sustainable, circular economy-based feed supply system.
