Abstract

This study investigates the English language needs of students enrolled in the Room Division program at the Tourism Polytechnic of Makassar, Indonesia. Recognizing English as a critical skill in the hospitality sector especially in guest-facing roles, this research aims to assess whether the current English course aligns with the communicative demands of the workplace. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered through a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 39 students, while qualitative insights were collected via semi-structured interviews with four purposively selected participants. Statistical analysis revealed that students perceived English as highly relevant to their future careers, particularly in speaking and customer service contexts. However, they also expressed a need for more interactive learning, including simulations, role-plays, and authentic materials. Thematic analysis of the interview data confirmed that students found the course lacking in real-world communication practice and contextualized vocabulary. Grounded in ESP theory, this study identifies gaps between the current curriculum and the specific language tasks expected in hotel operations. The findings underscore the importance of tailoring English instruction to meet learners’ professional goals and suggest the integration of task-based, industry-relevant activities. Recommendations are provided for curriculum developers, instructors, and policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of ESP instruction in vocational hospitality education.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze: (1) the effectiveness of using the brain writing model in improving students' narrative writing skills. (2) EFL students’ perceptions on the use of brain writing model in improving their narrative writing skill. The method employed was quantitative, using a pre-experimental design consisting of a one-group pretest and posttest design. This research was conducted at SMPIT Al-Fatih Makassar academic year 2022/2023. The sampling technique used was random sampling with 18 students. Writing tests and questionnaires were utilized as research instruments. The data were analyzed using SPSS v.26. The findings revealed that brain writing model was effective in improving students' skill to write narrative texts. It was shown by the score of pre-test and post-test increased by 49%. The mean of pre-test score was 53.67, whereas the mean post-test score was 80.06. Next, N-Gain score from pre-test and post-test was 0.5632 and it was categorized as medium effective. Furthermore, the T value was 0.000 < 0.05 which mean significant. On the other side, post-test scores of students' narrative writing outcomes concluded that around 72% of students passed the minimum completeness criteria and 28% did not pass it. Besides, the other findings indicated that students showed positive perceptions related to benefits, interests, activities, and implementation on the use of brain writing model in improving narrative writing skill.

Abstract

This research, which is a quasi-experiment, sought to ascertain whether using the Roundtable technique actually helped students improve their ability to write descriptive texts as well as to ascertain the students' perceptions of the technique's effectiveness. Implementing the Roundtable technique is the independent variable in this study, and students' perspectives and their abilities to write descriptive texts are the dependent variables. The population of this study consists of all six classes of SMK Tiwikrama Mamuju, and the sample consisted of class X1 as the experiment class and class X2 as the control class, both of which included 28 students each. The research data were obtained by giving a learning achievement test on the description text material in the form of pre-test and post-test. The data analysis technique is by using the SPSS program, data percentages and tables. Based on the results of statistical analysis, P = 0.00 less than a = 0.05. It is means that the implementation of the Roundtable Technique has a significant effect on the writing skills of X1 students of SMK Tiwikrama Mamuju on the subject matter of descriptive text.

Abstract

This research aims to provide tangible evidence concerning the effectiveness of utilizing group work based on interest to augment English speaking skill among students at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. Employing a quasi-experimental framework, data were gathered through pretest and posttest. The study encompassed tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 3 Makassar, and sample selection employed random sampling, enlisting X-6 as the experimental group and X-8 as the control group. The experimental group underwent interest-based group work, while the control group received conventional instruction. Pretest findings unveiled a mean score of 64.55 for the experimental group and 64 for the control group. Following the treatment for both groups, a post-test was administered, yielding a mean score of 76.55 for the experimental group and 70.51 for the control group. Notably, data showed an atypical distribution yet were homogenized, which led to the hypothesis test was assessed through Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests, facilitated by SPSS 22.0. Based form the test, The 2-tailed Sig. value of the test is .000 which is lower than alpha value of 0.05, indicating that there is significant improvement in speaking skill for high school students after using group work based on interest compared to the conventional method.Key words-- Group Work, Interest, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the enrichment of students' vocabulary proficiency through using the Spelling Bee game. The researcher employed a pre-experimental approach with a one-group pre-test and post-test design, collecting data through the administration of a test. The sample population for this research comprised 20 eighth-grade students, selected using the cluster random sampling technique. The finding of this research showed that the eighth grade students of SMP DDI Mattoanging have poor enough score in pre-test. After conducting the treatment of Spelling Bee Game, the students’ vocabulary mastery increase significantly. The result of the research showed that the mean score obtained the students through post-test (79.80) was higher than the pre-test (50.10). Vocabulary mastery improved 59.28% by using Spelling Bee game. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the enrichment of the students’ vocabulary mastery using Spelling Bee game was significantly enrich. Keywords— Vocabulary, Spelling Bee Game.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out EFL Islamic School teachers' perceptions toward the implemention of Merdeka Curriculum in their schools. This reasearch applied case study research design. Two Islamic Schools in Makassar South Sulawesi were selected as subject of the study. Five EFL teachers of those schools were selested as participants of the study using purposive sampling technique. Those teachers were asked about their perceptions related to their readiness in implementing Merdeka Curriculum, their challenges in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum, and their suggestions on the challenges in implementing Merdeka Curriculum in their schools. The data then analysed using Miles and Huberman qualitative data analysis. The research results showed: 1) Most of the teachers were ready to implement the Merdeka Curriculum in their schools, which can be seen from the readiness of creating lesson planning, learning processes, and assessment; 2) The challenges faced by EFL teachers in Islamic schools include: disparate grasp of the Merdeka Curriculum implementation among school supervisors, teachers have difficulties in implementing differentiated learning, lack of ability in using technology-based learning media, and lack of facilities and infrastructure; 3) Teacher suggestions on the challenges in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum include: unifying the understanding of school supervisors regarding the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum, providing training for teachers to work on learning tools, and providing special training according to subject matter, and providing adequate facilities and infrastructure, such as library to support the implementation of Merdeka Curriculum

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the English students’ ability in paraphrasing academic writing texts and the students’ perceptions of paraphrasing academic writing texts. The researcher applied a case study research design. The data collection used mixed-methods (quantitative and qualitative data). The data for this research were collected through test and an interview. The researcher employed the test as an instrument to discover the students' ability to paraphrase academic writing texts. Meanwhile, interviews were conducted to reveal students' perceptions of paraphrasing in academic writing texts. The sample for the test were 31 students. All participants for the test must meet the following criteria: Participants must be currently enrolled as students in the English Study Program and must be registered in an academic writing class. The test given to students focuses on four aspects by Jordan (1999), namely paraphrasing by changing synonyms, verb forms, word classes, and synthesis. In the interview session, seven students were selected for the interview. They were selected based on their respective abilities. This was done to make the students' perceptions more varied. The results of the study showed that students' paraphrasing ability by replacing vocabulary with synonyms were in the excellent category with the percentages of 67.74% and paraphrasing ability by replacing verb forms (active and passive) were also in the excellent category with the percentages 48.38%. However, students' ability to paraphrase by replacing word classes were in the unsatisfactory category, with student percentages of 70.96% and students' ability to paraphrase by synthesizing sentences were also in the unsatisfactory category, with student percentages of 48.38%. In the terms of students’ perceptions of paraphrasing academic writing text, the study found that despite many challenges students face in paraphrasing academic writing texts such as students lack of vocabulary, grammatical problems, and difficulty understanding the text, students believe that by doing strategies such as reading widely, practicing regularly, and improving skills, as well as support from lecturers, students can improve their paraphrasing skills for the better

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the implementation of web-blog in teaching and learning Reading Comprehension at Indonesian higher education institution. The study specifically would like to discover: (1) The application of web-log in teaching Reading Comprehension in the classroom; and (2) the impact of web-blog application on the students’ Reading Comprehension skill. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method using observation checklist and interview to collect the data. Five (5) fourth semester students at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar were selected as participants of the study using Purposive Random Sampling technique. The study found: (1) the lecturer perceived that the implementation of web-blog in teaching and learning reading comprehension skills has the potential to improve student learning outcomes, but technical problems and distractions are challenges that need to be overcome; and (2) the use of web- blog in teaching and learning Reading has a significant impact on increasing students' reading interest, motivation, and comprehension skills, making it an effective approach that offers a variety of benefits to students

Abstract

The objective of the study was to discover teachers’ scaffolding talk in EFL classroom interaction. The study employed case study design. The study was conducted at SMA 17 Makassar South Sulawesi. The data were obtained from classroom observation, semi-structured interview and questionnaire. In determining the participants, the researcher used purposive sampling approach taking one experienced teacher in that school. The data from observation and interview were analyzed by using data analysis procedure consisting of data collection, data condensation and conclusion drawing or verifying. The result of this study showed that: (1) there were five types of teacher’s scaffolding talk. They are modelling, explaining, inviting students’ participation, instructing, and questioning. From those types, it was found that all type of teachers’ scaffolding talk based on Wood (1995) occurred; (2) Scaffolding talks can facilitate the behavioral engagement of the students in EFL Classroom Interaction, such as paying more attention, attempting to ask question to the teacher, attempting to answer the question from the teacher and actively seeking for the information

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of implementing the Guided Reading method in increasing the reading literacy of students at SMPN 40 Makassar. The research method used was a quasi-experiment with a single group control pre-test and post-test design. The research sample consisted of two classes, where one class was used as an experimental group that received the Guided Reading method treatment, while the other class acted as a control group that received conventional learning. Data was collected through reading literacy tests before and after treatment, as well as through observation of the learning process. The results of the data analysis show a significant increase in the reading literacy scores of students who took part in learning using the Guided Reading method compared to the control group. In addition, observations revealed a higher level of involvement and interest from students in learning using the Guided Reading method. These findings confirm that the effective application of the Guided Reading method can improve the reading ability of SMPN 40 Makassar students and stimulate their interest in the learning process. The practical implication of this research is the importance of considering the use of appropriate learning methods in increasing reading literacy at the secondary school level. It is hoped that the results of this research can contribute to the development of more effective learning strategies to improve students’ reading skills in secondary schools.
