Abstract

The use of kenaf fiber as an eco-friendly textile material faces challenges in the dye printing process, particularly due to its limited dye absorption. This study aims to investigate and optimize various pre-treatment methods on handloom kenaf fabrics for reactive dye printing. A laboratory-based factorial design was employed, testing four pre-treatment variations: untreated, scouring, bleaching, and a combination of scouring and bleaching. Evaluations focused on color fastness to washing, rubbing, and perspiration, following national and international testing standards. Results indicated that single bleaching treatment yielded the most optimal print outcomes, characterized by bright, uniform colors and superior fastness properties, especially under dry rubbing and washing. The combined scouring-bleaching method produced inconsistent results, likely due to fiber degradation caused by over-treatment. It is concluded that single-step bleaching is the most effective pre-treatment for reactive dye printing on handloom kenaf fabrics. This research contributes to the advancement of sustainable textile processing based on natural fibers.

Abstract

The AquaCrop model is widely used under various agro-ecological conditions to reduce farm water consumption. The study aimed to simulate, validate, and measure the performance of AquaCrop models for canopy cover, biomass and soybean crop yields cultivated within a lysimeter. This research was conducted in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, the University of Jember, Indonesia (8°09'45.1" S, 113°42'58.2" E, 101 m a.s.l). There are four treatments in 4 lysimeters, namely P1 (irrigation based on recommendation), P2 (irrigation 95-105% FC), P3 (irrigation 75-85% FC) and P4 (irrigation 55-65% FC). The AquaCrop model is calibrated using canopy cover (CC) and then validated to predict the biomass and soybean yield. The experiment revealed that the model simulates better CC, biomass, and soybean yields with full irrigation than deficit irrigation. The performance of the AquaCrop model for soybeans of the Deja 2 variety in predicting CC, biomass, and soybean yield is impressive and reasonable. For the CC we found R2 ranges from 0.956 to 0.995, RMSE 10.389% to 3,293%, NRMSE 0.154% to 0.051%, NSE 0.918 to 0.992, and d 0.980 to 0.998. For biomass the R2 is 0.842, RMSE 0.111 t ha-1, NRMSE 0.017%, NSE 0.712, and d 0.937. For soybeans production the R2 is 0.999, RMSE 0.045  t.ha-1, NRMSE 0.018%,, NSE 0.908 and d 0.970. This study demonstrated that based on WUE, 55-65% FC irrigation is the most efficient application.

Abstract

Durian (Durio zibethinus), particularly the cultivars Monthong and Bawor, is a leading horticultural commodity with high economic value. Accurate leaf area estimation is essential for supporting physiological studies and plant growth modeling. However, conventional measurement methods are often characterized by their slow and destructive nature. This study aimed to analyze and identify the constant (k) values of the leaves of durian cultivars Monthong and Bawor using a digital image processing approach. A total of 40 leaf samples from each cultivar were analyzed. Image acquisition was performed using a smartphone camera, while image processing and leaf area measurement were conducted with the ImageJ software. The leaf constant was calculated as the ratio of the digitally measured leaf area to the product of manually measured leaf length and width. The results showed that the mean leaf constant for Monthong durian was 0.702, while for Bawor durian, it was 0.691. These results exhibited narrow value distributions, devoid of any outliers. The correlation between the measured and predicted leaf area yielded very high coefficients of determination (R² of 0.997 for cultivar Monthong and R² of 0.999 for cultivar Bawor). Further statistical evaluation confirmed that the predictive model had very high accuracy, evidenced by its low RMSE values (≤ 1.059), an NRMSE of 0.01, an NSE of at least 0.997, and a Willmott’s index of agreement (d) of at least 0.999. These results indicate that leaf constant values derived from digital image processing can generate precise leaf area estimates and offer a fast, efficient, and non-destructive alternative to conventional measurement methods. In practical terms, this approach enhances precision agriculture by enabling more accurate monitoring of leaf growth dynamics, which is essential for crop management and yield optimization. This finding presents opportunities for further application across other durian cultivars and the broader adoption of similar methods in other plant commodities within the context of precision agriculture and plant growth modeling.

Abstract

Silvofishery is an aquaculture concept that is integrated with the mangrove ecosystem. The concept of silvofishery cultivation is an environmental conservation model combined with the use of an integrated fish cultivation model. This silvofishery concept is very good to be developed in coastal waters. The hope is that in the future there will be activities to develop field class programs for silvofishery cultivation with various empowerment topics. The aim of this service is to make efforts to increase understanding and insight for fish farmers in Degayu Village regarding the silvofishery cultivation system which is carried out using the field class concept.  The method used is community empowerment through practical education about silvofishery cultivation. Furthermore, in this practice, an impact analysis was also carried out by distributing participant response questionnaires. Next, the data from the questionnaire was analyzed descriptively. The results of the service showed that there was an increase in the ability and insight of fish farmers regarding silvofishery cultivation techniques by 40%, knowledge about feeding management by 80%, knowledge about water quality management by 40% and ability regarding feeding practices by 30%. This means that this silvofishery cultivation field class activity is very progressive in improving the quality of human resources for fish farmers. This silvofishery cultivation field class activity is also interesting enough to increase interest in aquaculture literacy for fish farmers. This cultivation field class model is highly recommended to always be carried out consistently as a form of knowledge transfer effort between practitioners (academics) and the program beneficiary audience. From this service activity it can be concluded that the service activity has had an impact on increasing understanding and insight for cultivators in the technical fields of silvofishery cultivation, feeding management, water quality management, and comprehensive technical feeding practices.

Abstract

The utilization of marine animal waste as a base material for adsorbents has become an increasingly popular research topic across various scientific fields, including chemistry, environmental science, and materials science. Waste from marine animals, such as crab shells, oyster shell, seashell, and shrimp shell, possesses high potential to be processed into adsorbents due to their abundant calcium carbonate, chitosan, and protein content. The use of this waste as adsorbents not only provides a solution to environmental issues related to the accumulation of organic waste but also offers cheaper and eco-friendly alternative for water treatment, air purification, and contaminated soil remediation. Research has shown that marine animal waste-based adsorbents are effective in removing various pollutants, including heavy metals, textile dyes, and hazardous organic compounds. With specific modification techniques, the performance of these adsorbents can be enhanced, making them competitive with commercial adsorbents. Overall, the use of marine animal waste as adsorbents represents an innovative approach that contributes to waste reduction and the enhancement of environmental sustainability.
