Abstract

Dental issues in children, impacting proper tooth growth, highlight parental responsibility for a child's oral health. Children depend on their parents for dental care, and unaddressed dental caries can lead to growth disturbances and increased stunting rates. The 2021 SSGI study shows a 37.8% stunting prevalence in East Nusa Tenggara, surpassing the national rate of 24.4%, with 15 districts in NTT exceeding 30%. In 2022, the national stunting rate decreased to 21.6%, but East Nusa Tenggara maintained a dominant 35.3% rate, with Kupang City and Kupang Regency exceeding the national average at 25.1% and 24.1%, respectively. This study aims to explore the relationship between maternal knowledge and attitudes concerning oral health and the occurrence of dental caries in children at risk of stunting at SDN Baumata Timur. Utilizing a cross-sectional approach, 62 students were examined, and their Body Mass Index (BMI-for-age) identified those experiencing malnutrition. Subsequently, students with malnutrition underwent dental examinations, and their mothers completed a questionnaire. Among the 62 students, 25 were identified as malnourished. Data analysis, employing correlation and multiple regression tests with a significance level of p < 0.05, indicates that maternal knowledge is not significantly related to dental caries in children, both in permanent (DMF-T) and deciduous teeth (def-t). Conversely, maternal attitudes significantly correlate with dental caries in children in both types of teeth. Multiple regression analysis reveals no significant relationship between maternal knowledge and attitudes regarding dental health and DMF-T in elementary school children (p > 0.05). However, a more significant relationship exists between maternal attitudes toward dental health and def-t in elementary school children (p=0.010<0.05). This highlights that maternal attitudes toward children's dental health influence their behavior, particularly regarding deciduous teeth. In conclusion, while no significant relationship exists between maternal knowledge and dental caries in children, a significant association is evident between maternal attitudes and dental caries in children with malnutrition at SDN Baumata Timur.

Abstract

In Indonesia, according to the Riskesdas data, only 0.1% of 15-year-old children received fissure sealant treatment. Glass ionomer sealants can prevent caries on newly erupted permanent molars and are a good alternative because they are cheaper, painless, and easy to apply. The study aimed to evaluate the retention of glass ionomer sealants in preventing occlusal caries on permanent molars in children. The research method used an experimental design. The independent variable was the filling of deep fissures with Fuji VII glass ionomer, and the dependent variable was the occlusal status of the left and right lower first permanent molars, which included teeth that had been sealed with glass ionomer (intact sealant, partially lost, completely lost, either caries-free or carious). The population consisted of primary school children in Manefu, East Baumata Village. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling, targeting primary school children aged 7-10 years at SD Manefu who had deep fissures and were willing to participate. Data collection involved clinical trials, including sealing the left and right lower first permanent molars with Fuji VII glass ionomer and evaluating the sealant retention after six months. Data were processed and analyzed using descriptive statistical tests. The results showed that nine molars had good retention (23.68%), five molars had partially lost their sealant (13.15%), 31.57% of molars were caries-free despite losing their entire sealant, and 31.57% of molars developed caries after losing their entire sealant. Overall, 26 molars (68.42%) treated with fissure sealing were protected from caries. Initial enamel caries lesions occurred in 31.58% of sealed molars whose sealants had dislodged. In conclusion, the use of glass ionomer sealants demonstrated a retention effect and prevented occlusal caries on permanent molars in children by up to 68.42%.

Abstract

Standard precautions play a crucial role in preventing infections among patients, healthcare workers, and practicing students. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, masks, protective glasses, and protective clothing, helps prevent risks associated with needle-stick injuries, aerosol splashes, and water sprays. A preliminary study revealed that 70% of students do not comply with PPE usage, and 50% have inadequate knowledge regarding PPE. This study aims to analyze the relationship between students' knowledge levels and their compliance with PPE usage. Using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, the study involved 97 fifth-semester students undergoing practical training in the dental and oral healthcare laboratory from February to June 2024. The sample was selected using a total sampling technique, while data were collected through questionnaires, checklists, and interviews. Data analysis was performed using the Kendall Tau-b correlation test.  The results showed that 52.6% of students had good knowledge of PPE, while 70.1% were categorized as compliant in its use. The Kendall Tau-b correlation test indicated a significant relationship between knowledge level and compliance with PPE usage (p = 0.027 < 0.05).  In conclusion, higher knowledge levels about PPE are associated with greater compliance among students. Therefore, more intensive training and socialization efforts are needed to enhance students' adherence to PPE implementation.

Abstract

Promotive and preventive actions in maintaining dental and oral health start from an early age. The indicator for maintaining dental and oral health is the time to brush your teeth because brushing your teeth is the main primary preventive measure. The effectiveness of brushing your teeth not only depends on the shape and method of brushing your teeth, but also depends on the frequency and duration of brushing your teeth. The aim of this community service is to provide information in the form of counseling on how to brush teeth properly and correctly to each individual so that they can maintain the health of their teeth and mouth and provide early preventive measures against caries in PPA IO-641 Agape Sikumana children through toothbrushing. The method used is in the form of counseling using a dental panthom model and practicing how to brush teeth properly and correctly, as well as supervision so that children can understand and get used to brushing their teeth correctly. The success of implementing this activity is marked by the child's ability to brush their teeth independently in the correct way so that tooth decay can be prevented. Result: counseling on how to brush teeth properly and correctly using a direct demonstration method using a dental panthom model to teach PPA children how to brush teeth correctly. This shows that it is important to provide dental health information in PPA so that children can understand the technique and how to brush their teeth properly and correctly. Conclusion: children aged 6-8 years have received promotive efforts in the form of education on how to brush their teeth properly and correctly as well as received preventive efforts in the form of brushing their teeth. Suggestion: It is hoped that PPA IO-641 Agape Sikumana can collaborate in dental health care services with the Dental Health Department to obtain routine promotive and preventive efforts so that newly erupted young permanent teeth are protected from caries

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health is still a problem in society that needs attention. This is indicated by the prevalence of the population with dental and oral problems in Indonesia according to Riskesdas 2018, which has increased sharply from 23.2% in 2007 to 57.6% in 2018. Dental and oral health problems are still a major concern among elementary school children, especially due to the lack of knowledge and proper tooth brushing practices. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of picture book media in improving knowledge and proper tooth brushing practices in grades IV and V at SDN 2 Baumata Timur. Method: the method used is a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design. The sample in this study was 40 students selected by total sampling. Results: Data were collected through a knowledge questionnaire and observation sheets for tooth brushing practices before and after intervention in the form of providing picture books. The results of the study showed an increase in the knowledge score and practice of brushing students' teeth after using picture book media. The average knowledge score increased from 50 to 77.5, and the practice of brushing teeth showed a more appropriate behavioral change according to the recommended brushing standards. The conclusion of this study is that picture book media is effective as an educational tool to improve students' understanding and skills in maintaining dental and oral health. It is recommended that similar media be used continuously in health learning in elementary schools.
