Abstract

The divorce rate on Java Island tends to increase every year. These indicate a breakdown in marriages. But Javanese people do not only live in Java Island but are spread across many islands in Indonesia, primarily due to the transmigration program. Riau Province, situated on the island of Sumatra, is one of the areas designated for transmigration, resulting in a large number of Javanese people settling in these villages. It turns out that divorce cases are also common in these locations. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the practice of divorce by petition among Javanese women in a transmigration village in Riau Province. The research approach employed in this study was qualitative, with an exploratory research style and a feminist methodology that prioritizes considering women's voices and experiences as worthy of being heard. The results of suggest that certain factors contribute to divorce, particularly in the context of marriage values within Javanese culture: legal system and women’s growing legal awareness, reinterpretations of Javanese familial and cultural values, economic independence and the gendered dimension of divorce, and the search for legal and social legitimacy. Even in transmigration areas far from Java Island, Javanese transmigrants and their descendants continue to uphold Javanese traditional values. These values persist and are internalized in their daily practices, including in the practice of divorce by petition in the transmigration area of Java.

Abstract

ABSTRACT ENGLISH: Film is a mass communication media that combines audio and visual elements to convey messages to a wide audience. As a cultural product, film uniquely represents social realities, shapes public opinion, and serves as a platform for reflecting on various human issues. In the modern era, film has evolved into an effective tool for voicing social criticism and highlighting marginalized issues in public discourse, including violence and gender discrimination. One such film is Women from Rote Island, which focuses on the experiences of women in Eastern Indonesia who face domestic violence and structural discrimination. The film portrays how women fight to uphold their rights and dignity amid strong patriarchal cultural pressures. Through emotional storytelling and symbolic visuals, the film delivers messages of resistance against the injustices experienced by women. This article aims to analyse the representation of women's struggles in Women from Rote Island using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This theory is applied to explore the denotative (literal) and connotative (symbolic or cultural) meanings of the signs presented in the film—ranging from imagery, character expressions, and dialogue to setting. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, allowing the researcher to interpret the hidden messages and meaning structures constructed by the film. The analysis reveals that this film not only represents the social realities faced by women but also serves as a symbolic resistance to an unjust social system. It succeeds in building audience empathy and encouraging critical awareness of issues related to gender-based violence and discrimination. Thus, film can be seen as an effective alternative medium in voicing women's struggles and advocating for gender equality.

Abstract

Community-based programs and activities aimed at watershed management have been widely promoted and implemented. Social control within the community plays a crucial role in regulating and transforming public behavior in managing rivers. This study aims to explore the strategies employed by community groups in managing the Pusur Sub-Watershed. This research uses a qualitative method with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the strategies used by the community in managing the Pusur Sub-Watershed include the establishment of conservation field schools through both vegetative methods and the formation of plant cultivation groups in the upstream areas; the Clean River Program (Program Kali Bersih or Prokasih) through optimized waste management via Waste Banks; the River Care Program through the development of river tubing tourism in the midstream area of the Pusur River; environmentally friendly agriculture through agricultural clinics; irrigation management in the downstream area through the formation of the Combined Association of Water-User Farmers (Gabungan Perkumpulan Petani Pemakai Air or GP3A); and the emergence of collective actions in managing the Pusur Sub-Watershed through the establishment of the Pusur Institute.

Abstract

This study examines the social, economic, and ecological transformations in the management of the Pusur Sub-Watershed (Sub DAS) in Klaten Regency, with a focus on the distribution of actor roles and the contribution of local institutional arrangements. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection methods such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation across the upstream, midstream, and downstream areas of the sub-watershed. The findings reveal that multi-stakeholder engagement including local communities, regional governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations has driven significant socio-ecological transformations. Social-institutional changes are evident in the increased collective awareness among residents to establish and participate in river conservation communities, such as the Pusur Institute, which functions as a collaborative platform across actors. Ecologically, improvements are observed through conservation practices in upstream recharge areas, waste reduction through waste banks, eco-friendly agriculture, and river tubing activities, which have transformed the river into both an ecological and recreational asset. Economically, the development of alternative livelihoods such as conservation farming, river tourism, and waste bank initiatives has provided supplementary income for local communities. These findings suggest that Sub-Watershed management based on community participation and strengthened local institutions can serve as an effective strategy for achieving sustainable development at the local level.

Abstract

The development of digital media has given rise to the phenomenon of sharenting, namely the practice of parents sharing their children’s lives on social media. This activity is not merely an expression of affection but also a social practice that involves identity construction, privacy negotiation, and the potential commodification of children. This study analyzes sharenting through Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective, viewing parents as actors who present an ideal family image on the frontstage while concealing realities in the backstage. The research employs a qualitative approach with a library research strategy, utilizing scholarly articles, academic books, and policy reports. The findings reveal that sharenting serves as a tool of impression management but also generates serious risks such as blurred private–public boundaries, the permanence of digital footprints, the potential for cyberbullying, and commercial exploitation of children. Therefore, sharenting must be understood as a complex phenomenon that demands ethical awareness, clear regulations, and critical reflection from both parents and policymakers.
