Abstract

Indonesia Fisheries Management Area 718 (IFMA-718), located in the Arafura Sea, is known for its high marine biodiversity and serves as a strategic fishing ground. However, the lack of fishing gear selectivity in this area poses a significant threat to the sustainability of marine resources. This study aims to evaluate the selectivity of purse seine fishing gear through biodiversity analysis using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’), evenness index (E), and dominance index (C). Data collection was conducted from September 2023 to March 2024 in the Arafura Sea using a 149 GT purse seiner. Catch data were categorized into target species, bycatch, and discards. The results showed that the values of H’ ranged from 0.77 to 1.40, E values were mostly greater than 1, and C values were below 0.5. These findings indicate a high species diversity and evenness, alongside low dominance, suggesting a relatively balanced community structure. However, such diversity also reflects the low selectivity of the fishing gear, which captures both target and non-target species, including demersal and benthic organisms. In conclusion, the purse seine gear used in IFMA-718 is considered to have low selectivity and is potentially harmful to non-target marine ecosystems. This study provides essential insights for improving selective fishing practices and implementing sustainable fisheries management in the region.

Abstract

The escalating need for animal protein has stimulated the growth of the capture fisheries industry. However, undue carelessness concerning the maintenance and operation of fishing vessels often results in scenarios that pose serious risks, even leading to fatal accidents. In Karawang District, the high spirit of fishermen in setting sail plays a major role in boosting the productivity in the capture fisheries sector. Yet, the awareness of the importance of using personal safety equipment while at sea remains disappointingly low. The Fish Capture Study Program of the Politeknik Kelautan dan Perikanan Karawang set out to organize a training sessions aimed for enhancing the fishermen’s awareness of safety during their voyages. These sessions are a manifestation of the social responsibility in empowering the community and promoting sustainable development. Through presentations, and direct demonstrations, fishermen are instructed on various aspects of safety during their voyage. The training includes techniques for self-preservation at sea, use of the red hand flare, activation of parachute signals, and smoke signals during emergencies, as well as the use of life buoys and life jackets to enhance safety at sea. This community service activity was attended by 20 fishermen residing on the coast of Karawang District. The initiative attempts to strike a balance between the urgency to meet the growing demands for animal protein, and the obligation to promote safe and sustainable practices in the capture fisheries sector.

Abstract

Abstract

Pekalongan National Fishing Port (PPN Pekalongan), a type B fishing port, is recognized for its well-managed facilities and serves as an operational base for purse seine vessels. Purse seines are widely employed to harvest schooling pelagic fish, most of which are species of high economic value, thus requiring appropriate handling to maintain quality. This study aims to examine the handling practices of purse seine catches on board KM. Bintang Mas Maritim, focusing on storage temperature, handling equipment, and storage duration under freezer-based systems. Data collected included fish temperature at hauling, during freezing, and after storage, as well as the handling methods and equipment used by fishermen. The initial body temperature of the fish was 29.3°C at hauling. Fish were sorted by species, size, and quality, then washed and frozen at -18°C for 24 hours. Once frozen, they were packaged and transferred to the fish hold at -13.7°C for storage. The findings highlight the importance of systematic handling, washing, rapid freezing, and controlled storage—to maintain fish quality and extend shelf life.

Abstract

The blue swimming crab is a leading commodity in Karawang Regency in terms of economic value. It is marketed locally and internationally. Blue swimming crabs are sold to consumers both alive and processed, so a supply chain process is needed that can meet consumer demand quickly and maintain excellent quality. This study aims to analyze the management, structure, and costs of the blue swimming crab supply chain and evaluate its external performance using the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) method, which is considered a systematic approach for measuring supply chain performance. This study was conducted in Tirtajaya District, Cilamaya Wetan District, and at a blue swimming crab processing company in Cirebon. The results of this study include an explanation of the supply chain targets, supply chain structures, types of costs incurred by fishermen, traders, collectors, and suppliers, as well as the value of the external performance of the supply chain. The research subjects consisted of fishermen, traders, and collectors. The structure of the blue swimming crab supply chain in Karawang Regency had two different flows or chain networks from fishermen to suppliers. The costs generally incurred are operational costs, including diesel fuel, supplies, fishing gear, bait (if using traps), and transportation. External performance measurements of the blue swimming crab supply chain in Karawang Regency consistently yield superior results across all indicators. However, the order fulfillment indicator yielded parity due to the lean season.
