Abstract

Post-pandemic era is a situation after pendemic Covid-19 that hits almost every part of the world. The situation forces many people to create a new strategy in their life, including in learning-teaching process. In this era, the use of information technology through gadgets is considered the best way to conduct the learning process, provide teaching materials, and more. Moreover, the use of gadgets is seen as a tool that can connect both teachers and students to the global world, making information easily accessible to enrich the teaching materials used. This indicates that information technology through gadgets plays a crucial role in the learning process. However, the question arises whether the paradigm regarding the importance of gadgets in learning during the pandemic era also persists in the post-pandemic era. Therefore, this research aims to understand teachers' perceptions of the learning process in the post-pandemic era to explore learning processes in this period. Qualitative descriptive research, using interview and observation methods, was employed to gather data on post-pandemic era learning from two teachers in Jakarta Timur, Depok and Bogor. The results of this research show that teachers still believe that bringing gadgets into the learning process at school can have a negative impact on students. This is because gadgets may disrupt students' concentration by engaging in activities such as playing games or using social media. As a result, the teachers prohibit students from bringing gadgets into the classroom. These findings indicate that gadgets are still considered negative when brought into the learning process, proving that the learning paradigm during the pandemic era, which relied on information technology in the form of gadgets, is not applicable to some teachers, as evidenced by the prohibition of students bringing gadgets into the classroom.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the struggle of a secret service agent to clear his name of an alleged assassination he did not commit, as visualized in the movie Angel Has Fallen, using Vladimir Propp’s theory, particularly the seven spheres of action and thirty-one narrative functions. To conduct this research, the writer employed a qualitative method. During the analysis process, the writer classified the characters into the seven spheres of action and identified the sequence of events based on the thirty-one narrative functions. The results of this research revealed five spheres of action: villain, donor, helper, hero, and false hero. Additionally, ten narrative functions were identified in the movie Angel Has Fallen, including departure, pursuit, the first function of the donor, unfounded claims, beginning counteraction, villainy, guidance, struggle, victory, and exposure. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of how narrative structures and character roles are used to convey themes of redemption and justice in action movies. The application of Propp’s theory provides a framework for analyzing the narrative complexities of modern films. This research could serve as a reference for future studies exploring the narrative structures of action or thriller genres and could also be useful for filmmakers aiming to craft compelling and structured narratives

Abstract

Interpretation in communication plays an important role in understanding the message conveyed in every utterance. However, disagreements sometimes arise because the receiver of the message interprets the utterance differently. This study aims to delve deeper into the interpretation of speech acts in the use of language varieties, particularly the use of frozen language variety in online media reporting. A qualitative descriptive method is used in this research to discuss the interpretation of the use of frozen language variety. The results of this study indicate that the use of frozen language varieties such as the words "sultan," "baginda," and "paduka" can be interpreted not only to indicate a degree of honor but also as satire to mock someone. One piece of evidence is when a governor was addressed as "baginda," and he responded to the greeting with displeasure. Another example is when a ministry was dubbed the "sultan ministry," which indicates a satire or criticism of the institution. This shows that language varieties, especially frozen language, can have different interpretations depending on the social, cultural, and value context in society.

Abstract

Effective communication is essential in learning English, especially in the speaking aspect. This challenge was evident at SMPN 22 West Jakarta, where students struggled to communicate with their teachers due to language barriers. To address this, the researcher conducted a study in class 9F, involving 33 students, using Classroom Action Research (CAR) across three cycles. The class was chosen due to limited interaction and communication during English lessons. The goal was to improve students' speaking skills through a communicative approach, supplemented with the Simon Says game. The results showed significant improvement in speaking skills. In cycle I, only 11 out of 33 students (33%) could speak English. By cycle III, this number increased to 100%, demonstrating that the communicative approach combined with the Simon Says game was effective in enhancing speaking skills at the junior high school level.

Abstract

This study explores the language learning factors: challenges and opportunities in the acquisition of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) among junior high school learners in Lampung, Indonesia. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, it involved 120 eighth-grade students from three public schools and utilized proficiency assessments, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. Quantitative results indicated moderate proficiency, with significant weaknesses in speaking fluency and listening comprehension. Meanwhile, qualitative data revealed that grammar-focused instruction, limited English exposure, and learner anxiety were key obstacles to effective acquisition. Thematic analysis identified three major issues: the predominance of traditional teaching methods, low student confidence in communicative tasks, and limited engagement with English-language media. These findings underscore the need for more communicative and enriching classroom practices and learner-centered approaches. The study offers context-specific pedagogical recommendations and highlights directions for future research in similar EFL settings.

Abstract

Integrating critical thinking (CT) into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing instruction presents ongoing challenges, particularly in non-Western academic settings such as Indonesia. Therefore, this study investigates using CT-oriented learning logs to improve academic writing performance among EFL university students at STKIP PGRI Lampung. The research aimed to enhance students’ ability to develop coherent arguments and express reasoned perspectives in writing. Employing a mixed-methods design, the study involved 35 second-semester students who participated in a 14-week intervention that combined opinion writing, summary tasks, and reflective responses. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests assessed using holistic and analytical rubrics, while qualitative data were derived from thematic analysis of students’ reflective logs. Results indicated significant improvements in writing fluency, argumentative structure, and quality of reasoning. However, aspects such as the clarity of topic sentences and paragraph cohesion remained areas for development. The findings contribute to the growing literature on CT in EFL contexts and demonstrate that structured reflective practices can effectively support the development of academic writing. This study offers practical implications for EFL educators aiming to integrate critical thinking into writing pedagogy through accessible and contextualized strategies.

Abstract

Abstract This study investigates how deep learning engagement influences academic self-efficacy and language performance among English majors in Indonesia. Deep learning is an active and reflective process that involves critical thinking, conceptual integration, and self-regulated learning. Using a person-centred quantitative design, data were collected from 300 English majors across three universities and analysed through Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). This study applies LPA in English as Foreign Language (EFL) higher education and examines how learner diversity can be observed in a Muslim-majority population. The analysis identified three distinct learner profiles: reflective analysts, strategic learners, and passive processors. Reflective Analysts achieved the highest levels of academic self-efficacy and language performance, as measured by GPA in writing and speaking. In contrast, Passive Processors recorded the lowest scores. Profile membership was significantly influenced by academic year with clear developmental trend, whereas gender had no effect. Overall, the findings confirm that deep learning engagement is a strong predictor of EFL achievement. Theoretically, the study advances understanding of learner diversity of deep learning within Southeast Asian higher education. Practically, The study underscores the need for differentiated instruction (e.g., reflective writing and scaffolding) to help less engaged learners strengthen their critical reflection and self-regulation.
