Abstract

Mempelajari bahasa Inggris sangat penting diberikan kepada peserta didik di Indonesia agar sebagai penerus bangsa peserta didik dapat bersaing secara global, dengan begitu, peserta didik dapat mengantarkan Negara ini menjadi menjadi Negara yang bermutu di mata dunia. Dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, peserta didik berusaha untuk memiliki pengetahuan dan keterampilan dalam hal mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis. Membaca sangat penting dikuasai oleh peserta didik karena dalam membaca ada pesan yang terkandung dalam konten teks tersebut yang dapat dijadikan pengetahuan yang baru untuk peserta didik. Kendati demikian, berdasarkan hasil identifikasi ditemukan bahwa peserta didik di kelas VIII.11 SMP Negeri 9 Ambon masih kesulitan dalam memahami konten bacaan berbahasa Inggris, karena itu, penulis menerapkan strategi pull and retell dengan harapan peserta didik dapat menunjukan peningkatan dalam kemampuan membaca dan memahami teks bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan keberhasilan penerapan strategi tersebut dengan presentase 86.7%.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the difficulties in learning English Grammar and their strategies to overcome it. The researcher used mixed method with the explanatory sequential mixed methods design. This method involved a two-part project in which the researcher collects quantitative data in the first phase, analyzes the results, and then used the results to develop the qualitative part in the second phase. This research took in English education study program, Pattimura University during this year. Batch 2022 was the subject and 99 students were the population. For the sample, Class A which had 32 students and 6 students were selected as the interview participants. The result showed that material and structural difficulties, as well as psychological difficulties, contributed significantly to the overall difficulties experienced by the participants. Furthermore, students learning strategies to overcome their difficulties in learning English, the data suggests that participants in this study employ a diverse range of strategies to support their learning. While all strategies are utilized, metacognitive strategies and affective strategies seem to be particular prominent. Students also agree that psychological difficulties affect students' ability to learn grammar, particularly fear of mistakes and confidence issues. The last that each student has different learning strategies in overcoming the difficulties that exist. All six students have explained how they overcome their difficulties in learning grammar as well as the psychological difficulties that have affected their ability to learn English grammar. The investigation emphasizes the importance of metacognitive and affective strategies in overcoming psychological difficulties to learning grammar.

Abstract

This study employed a qualitative research design to investigate how teachers use the Quizizz platform as a formative assessment tool in English foreign language (EFL) teaching, and to explore teachers' perceptions of using Quizizz. The researchers conducted a preliminary study in Ambon, to identify teachers who were using Quizizz for formative assessment. Four teachers from SMA Negeri 2 Ambon were then selected as the sample for the present study. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that the teachers demonstrated a thoughtful and structured approach to integrating Quizizz into their lessons. They strategically designed Quizizz assessments to target key language skills like vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. The teachers perceived several benefits of using Quizizz, including enhanced student engagement and motivation, improved learning and comprehension, and more efficient assessment processes. However, challenges were also noted, such as the reliance on stable internet connectivity and issues of digital equity, where not all students had access to the necessary devices.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to identify the difficulties faced by EFL students in microteaching class, to find out the most significant difficulties and the strategies to overcome the difficulties faced by EFL students in microteaching class for sixth semester students in the English Education Study Program of Pattimura University. To obtain information from EFL students, this research used explanatory mixed method involving questionnaires and interviews to collected the data. The questionnaires are used to answer the identifying students and interviews are used to answer strategies used by students in microteaching classes. The participants of the research were from 37 students of class A in the sixth semester class students of 2020 in academic year 2023/2024, at English Education Study Program, Pattimura University. The results of questionnaires showed that difficulties face by EFL students as prospective teachers in the procedural category 45%, managerial category 65%, psychological category 55%, instructional category 41%, and professional category 29%. While, the result of the interview and questionnaire also showed that most of the EFL students’ difficulty in managerial category. Based on questionnaire result 65% EFL students as prospective teachers had difficulties in managerial category namely difficulty in planning advance the contents of the material, difficulty in explaining the material to the participants, difficulty in managing the classrom, difficulty in using series of teaching strategies according to strategy planning and material and difficulty in controlling the class activity. While, based on interview result students mentioned that they had difficulties also in managerial category namely difficulty in using series of teaching strategies and explaining the material. The strategies that EFL students used to overcome their difficulties based on interviews results are more practice, time management, discuss with the lecturer and friends, watching videos on the internet/YouTube, and learn more. Most of them always practice more to overcome their difficulties in microteaching classes.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition is a cornerstone in language learning, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, where proficient vocabulary knowledge underpins comprehension and communication skills. This study investigates the efficacy of multimedia glosses in enhancing vocabulary learning and retention among EFL learners of SMP Negeri 2 Tiakur, Southwest Maluku Regency, addressing the limitations of traditional methods in supporting vocabulary acquisition. Drawing from the literature on language acquisition and educational technology, the study employs an experimental design to compare the effectiveness of multimedia glosses against traditional approaches. Twelve male and fifteen female junior high school students of SMP Negeri 2 Tiakur participated and were divided into control and treatment groups. Results indicate a statistically significant advantage for the treatment group, demonstrating enhanced vocabulary learning outcomes. Moreover, the study explores the nuanced effects of multimedia glosses on vocabulary acquisition tasks, shedding light on the cognitive processes involved. Findings underscore the potential of multimedia glosses in facilitating vocabulary acquisition and comprehension among EFL learners, offering insights for educators and curriculum designers. This research contributes to the discourse on language learning methodologies and underscores the importance of leveraging technology to address pedagogical challenges in language education.

Abstract

The research context in this study is to find a correlation between students' learning styles and their achievement in speaking courses. This study aims to determine whether or not there is a correlation between students' learning styles (as variable X) and their achievement in speaking class (as variable Y) in odd-semester students in 2023 at Pattimura University. There were 54 students taken as the sample of this study who were determined by using simple random sampling. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the instruments used were students’ speaking achievement and questionnaire. The results showed that the visual learning style had the highest mean value among the three types. Based on rxy: 0.624, the correlation between students’ learning styles and their speaking achievement is strong. Speaking fluency is a key indicator of language learning, and understanding one's learning style can help students learn more efficiently and successfully.

Abstract

Debat Bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu metode pembelajaran yang penting dan menjadi bagian dari kebutuhan sekolah dalam meningkatkan sumber daya manusia teristimewa ketrampilan komunikasi global. Untuk menjawab kebutuhan sekolah, pelatihan ini diinisiasi dan dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Pattimura. Peserta pelatihan yakni para guru Bahasa Inggris SMA/SMK se-kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat, Provinsi Maluku. Tujuan pelatihan ini untuk memberikan pemahaman yang komprehensif mengenai pentingnya kegiatan debat Bahasa Inggris melalui paparan sistem debat pada kompetisi debat Bahasa Inggris tingkat SMA/SMK secara lokal, regional, nasional maupun internasional. Pemahaman ini untuk ditandaklanjuti di sekolah dalam meningkatkan kemampuan keahlian berbicara dan berpikir kritis analitik bagi siswa dan guru sebagai pengajar sekaligus berpotensi membina dan melatih siswa untuk kemampuan dimaksud. Metode pelaksanaan dalam pelatihan ini meliputi tahapan persiapan, pembekalan dan keberlanjutan kegiatan. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan secara daring melalui aplikasi zoom dalam bentuk pemaparan pemahaman secara teoritis untuk selanjutnya tahapan keberlanjutan kegiatan dalam pendampingan dan pelatihan langsung secara luring kepada para guru. Hasil dari pelatihan ini yakni para guru memiliki pengetahuan yang mendalam mengenai debat Bahasa Inggris dan rekomendasi untuk pelatihan penguatan secra luring kepada para guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah tingkat SMA/SMK se-Kabupaten Seram Bagian Barat. Abstract

This study aims to improve the English learning achievement of students at SMP Negeri 9 Ambon through the use of Quizizz media. The method employed was Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles involving 20 students from class VIII-10. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and tests, then analyzed using a descriptive comparative approach. The findings revealed that the students’ average score in the pre-cycle was 69 with a mastery percentage of 50%. After implementing Quizizz, students’ achievement improved in Cycle I with an average score of 78.75 and a mastery rate of 70%, and further increased in Cycle II with an average of 88.1 and 100% mastery. These results indicate that the application of Quizizz can enhance students’ engagement in learning and positively impact their English learning achievement

Abstract

This study aims to enhance students' reading comprehension through the Reading, Encoding, Annotating, Pondering (REAP) strategy using a classroom action research (CAR) methodology. Conducted with grade X-TPM students from SMK N 1 Dobo during the 2020/2021 academic year, the research involved 11 students over three cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection included pre-tests, post-tests, observation checklists, and student questionnaires. The study addressed two research questions: 1) How does the REAP method improve reading comprehension for tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Dobo? 2) What are the pros and cons of using REAP for teaching reading? Improvements in test scores measured success. The findings showed a marked enhancement in reading comprehension, with progressive score improvements across the cycles. Initially, only 2 students had good scores, but by the third cycle, all students scored between 70 and 95, meeting the success criteria and demonstrating significant improvement with the REAP strategy.

Abstract

Anak-anak adalah generasi penerus keluarga, bangsa, dan negara. Perkembangan anak yang baik akan dimulai dari lingkungan keluarga. Jika keluarga memberikan lingkungan yang nyaman dan mendukung perkembangan anak, pertumbuhan dan perkembangan anak akan lebih optimal. Oleh karena itu, pola asuh yang baik diperlukan untuk mendukung perkembangan anak, baik secara fisik maupun mental. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran pola asuh dalam perkembangan bahasa anak. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik studi pustaka, yaitu dengan mengumpulkan berbagai penelitian atau literatur yang berkaitan dengan pola asuh dan perkembangan bahasa. Analisis data dilakukan dengan mendeskripsikan secara tertulis studi-studi yang telah diperoleh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peran pola asuh orang tua sangat penting bagi perkembangan bahasa anak. Orang tua yang memiliki pola asuh demokratis cenderung lebih stabil dan dapat menghindari gangguan mental.
