Abstract

Abstract

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a condition that affects quality of life and is often associated with cardiovascular disease. By 2025, global ED cases are expected to reach 322 million, with strong links to depression and reduced well-being. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between age and body weight and ED among government and private-sector workers. This observational analytic study involved 64 participants selected via purposive random sampling in Makassar from June to July 2024. ). ED was measured using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5), a validated questionnaire for assessing erectile function. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods (Chi-Square test). Most respondents were aged 31–40 years (34.38%), overweight (37.5%), and had normal erectile function (56.25%). A significant association was found between BMI and erectile function (p = 0.024), where normal and overweight individuals reported better erectile function. No significant associations were found between erectile function and age (p = 0.922), medical history (p = 0.304), medication use (p = 0.508), or frequency of sexual intercourse (p = 0.318). In conclusion, BMI was significantly related to erectile function, while age, disease, medication use, and sexual frequency were not.

Abstract

Indoor air pollution, particularly from cigarette smoke, poses significant environmental health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular effects. Sansevieria trifasciata has been reported as a natural air purifier capable of reducing volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide (CO) in indoor environments. However, evidence regarding the effectiveness of plant-derived extracts combined with essential oils remains limited. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Sansevieria trifasciata leaf extract, alone or in combination with essential oil, in reducing CO concentrations in enclosed indoor spaces exposed to cigarette smoke. Methods A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design was employed using four experimental rooms. Interventions included 60 mL S. trifasciata extract (PBL-21), 60 mL extract + 5 drops essential oil (PBL-20), 5 drops essential oil only (PBL-19), and control with no intervention (PBL-18). CO concentrations were measured before and after a 60-minute diffusion period using a portable CO analyzer. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and ANOVA. Results: CO levels decreased by 37.5% in PBL-21, 68.8% in PBL-20, and 33.3% in PBL-19, while the control group showed minimal change. The combination of extract and essential oil demonstrated the greatest reduction, suggesting a synergistic effect. Conclusion: The combination of Sansevieria trifasciata extract and essential oil effectively reduced indoor CO levels from cigarette smoke in a quasi-experimental setting. These findings support the potential of plant- and essential oil-based interventions as eco-friendly, accessible strategies for improving indoor air quality. Further research with larger experimental designs and chemical profiling is recommended to validate and optimize these interventions.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral health is essential to the general health and well-being of all children and adults. The implementation of oral health behaviour is expected to start at an early age in the family environment, although the orphaned are often neglected. This study aimed to analyze differences of oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice differences of oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice among orphan residents. Methods: This analytical study used a cross-sectional method, comprising 346 orphaned residents from 27 orphanages in Makassar City. A total of 24 items; a closed-ended structured questionnaire was used to assess oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice among orphans. Furthermore, a stratified random sampling method was used for sample selection. Data analysis was conducted with the Mann-Whitney U statistical test. Results: The results showed that 65% of orphan residents had sufficient knowledge, 80% possessed a good attitude, and 53.8% had sufficient behaviours regarding oral health. Significant differences were observed in oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice based on age groups (p<0.05). Notably, there were also significant differences in knowledge and attitude (p<0.05) related to oral health among orphan residents. Conclusion: There were differences in knowledge and practices, and generally good attitudes towards oral health. Moreover, orphanage caretakers should be educated and trained in oral health practice.

Abstract

This community engagement program was conducted to address household organic waste issues in Bulu Cindea Village by introducing eco-enzyme production as a practical and environmentally friendly solution. The activity aimed to improve community awareness, strengthen household-level waste management practices, and create economic opportunities through the utilization of organic kitchen waste. The implementation method consisted of community education sessions, hands-on training, and guided mentoring. A total of 25 participants, all members of the local women’s group, were involved in the activity. They were first introduced to the environmental impacts of unmanaged organic waste, followed by direct practice in preparing mixed organic materials, measuring ingredients, and setting up fermentation containers under supervised instruction. The mentoring process supported participants during the initial fermentation phase and introduced potential household uses and income-generating opportunities from eco-enzyme products. The activity resulted in significant improvements in knowledge and skills, as demonstrated by pre- and post-activity assessments, and all participants successfully produced at least one fermentation unit to be continued at home. Participants also reported reduced household waste volume and a better understanding of how eco-enzyme production can support daily needs, such as plant care and cleaning, while offering potential for micro-business development. This activity highlights the community’s capacity to adopt simple environmentally friendly technologies and demonstrates that empowering women as key actors can strengthen sustainable household waste management. The findings show that eco-enzyme activities can serve as an entry point for promoting green economic practices in rural coastal communitie
