Abstract

Adolescent reproductive health knowledge remains suboptimal due to insufficient access to accurate, evidence-based educational resources. This challenge is further compounded by the dissemination of unreliable information, resulting in misconceptions and improper health practices. This study presents a community-based initiative aimed at enhancing reproductive health literacy among students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru, with a particular focus on integrating the use of natural resources as a preventive strategy. The program addresses gaps in structured reproductive health education and leverages locally available natural resources to foster sustainable health practices. The initiative encompasses structured activities, including socialization sessions for students and educators, comprehensive training on reproductive health and the utilization of natural resources, and the deployment of technology to facilitate information dissemination. Implemented by a multidisciplinary team from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Abdurrab, the program is supported by ongoing mentorship and systematic evaluations using surveys and interviews. This initiative underscores the potential for sustained impact through partnerships with schools, local health agencies, and community organizations. By enhancing awareness and encouraging the adoption of natural, sustainable practices, the program serves as a translational application of research findings, with the potential for scalability to other educational institutions and broader community settings.

Abstract

The Falls in the elderly are a major cause of illness and death worldwide. Falls are associated with risk factors. Worldwide, the proportion of people aged 60 years was 14% in 2013 and is expected to increase to 19% in 2050. This quantitative descriptive study aims to understand the risk factors associated with falls in the elderly at Integrated Healthcare Center (Posyandu) Kasih Ibu located on Jl. Singgalang Satu, RT 1, RW 07, East Tangkerang Village, Pekanbaru, Riau Province. This research used a cross-sectional survey method involving 100 elderly people at Integrated Healthcare Center (posyandu), a sample of 45 people with 15 men and 30 women, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire adopted from the Outcome Measure Toolkit for Geriatric Fall/Balance Assessment, administered before and after the fall risk and prevention webinar. The results showed that the average age of participants was 60.71 years with a standard deviation of 9.99. The majority were women, reflecting the higher prevalence of falls among women due to physiological differences. Health parameters such as maximum systolic 192 mmHg, and maximum diastolic blood pressure 130 mmHg and maximum blood glucose 371 mg/dL levels were analyzed showing a significant data influence on the risk of falls. The pre-webinar questionnaire indicated a general lack of knowledge about fall risks and prevention. Post-webinar analysis which was carried out twice and then processed using the Wilcoxon test showed a significant increase in understanding the risk of falls, with the average score increasing from 2.27 ± 0.97 to 4.27 ± 0.96 (P = 0.000). This shows that educational webinars can effectively increase older people's knowledge about the risk of falls and prevention strategies. These findings are in line with previous research highlighting the importance of continuing health education in reducing the incidence of falls and improving the quality of life of older adults.

Abstract

The application of Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (FE-SEM/EDX) for the characterization of biological samples can produce promising results for classification purpose. The limitations of the established sample preparation technique of cervical cells for FE-SEM/EDX study that differentiate between normal and abnormal cells prompted the development of a proposed protocol for the preparation of cervical cells. The proposed protocol was conducted by a McDowell-Trump fixative prepared in 0.1M phosphate buffer without osmium tetroxide at 4°C for 2 h in the fixation process. Morphologically, the cervical cells scanned under the FE-SEM/EDX did not present blackening effects, and the structure of the cells was not broken based on the FE-SEM images. Quantitatively, the possible elemental distributions in the cells, such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sodium, are detected in samples prepared by the proposed protocol. The analysed elements were validated using the Attenuated Total Reflection and Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR/FTIR) spectroscopy. Moreover, by avoiding osmium tetroxide fixation, the time required for sample preparation decreased significantly. This sample preparation protocol can be used for normal and abnormal cervical cells in achieving better results in terms of morphological, detected elemental distribution, and rapid in time.

Abstract

Introduction: Preeclampsia is hypertension after 20 weeks gestation, characterized by systolic >140 mmHg or diastolic >90 mmHg in 2 examinations with an interval at least 4 hours in women whose blood pressure was previously normal, accompanied by proteinuria. Preeclampsia is the highest cause of maternal mortality in Indonesia. Changes in the hematological profile in preeclampsia occur due to hemoconcentration, inflammatory processes, thrombocyte activation, and thrombocyte coagulation. Objective: This research aims to determine the difference in hematological profile between preeclampsia patients  and normotensive pregnancy at dr. Suhatman MARS Dumai Hospital. Method: This study was analytic observational research with a cross sectional approach, which conducted at dr. Suhatman MARS Dumai Hospital in January – June 2024. The sample of this study is all preeclampsia patients (mild and severe preeclampsia) and normotensive pregnancy recorded in medical records for the 2022-2023 period, who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Hematology profile data (hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocyte, leukocyte, and thrombocyte) were tested for normality and homogeneity. The difference in hematology profile between mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, and normotensive pregnancy were analyzed by the ANOVA one-way test. Results: Mild preeclampsia group had the lowest mean hemoglobin level, which was 11.43 gr/dl. Severe preeclampsia group had the lowest mean hematocrit levels and erythrocyte count with values of 32.30% and 3.91 million/mm3, respectively. The highest mean leukocyte count and the lowest mean thrombocyte count were found in normotensive group among which 12,778/mm3 and 232,565/mm3, respectively. Statistical test showed there was no significant difference between mild preeclampsia, severe preeclampsia, and normotensive group in hemoglobin levels (p=0.864), hematocrit levels (p=0.326), erythrocytes count (p=0.191), leukocytes count (p=0.422), and thrombocyte count (p=0.287). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in hematology profile (hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocyte) between preeclampsia patient and normotensive pregnancy at dr. Suhatman MARS Dumai Hospital.
