Abstract

In the rapidly evolving 21st century, fostering analytical thinking skills has become a critical objective in science education, enabling students to solve complex problems and adapt to knowledge-driven economies. This systematic literature review, covering research from 2013 to 2024 and focusing on Scopus-indexed journals (Q1–Q3), aims to identify trends in analytical thinking research, explore effective pedagogical approaches, and analyze methodological diversity in the field. Using the PRISMA framework, 60 peer-reviewed studies were systematically selected and analyzed through both quantitative and qualitative methods, with thematic coding and tools like Vosviewer employed to uncover patterns and themes. The findings highlight a surge in research during 2020–2021, driven by the global shift to remote learning, and emphasize the effectiveness of innovative teaching strategies such as Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning (PjBL), and Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in fostering analytical skills. The review also underscores the role of technological interventions, such as virtual labs and simulations, in enhancing student engagement and cognitive development. However, gaps were identified, including the need for longitudinal studies and standardized evaluation metrics to assess long-term impacts. The study concludes that integrating evidence-based, scalable strategies across diverse educational contexts is essential for promoting analytical thinking as a core competency. Future research should prioritize interdisciplinary approaches and leverage emerging technologies to address these gaps. These findings provide actionable insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers aiming to advance science education and prepare students for the challenges of a dynamic world.

Abstract

The increasing global prevalence of oxidative stress-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders underscores the importance of developing effective antioxidant strategies. In this study, samples of ethanol extract from Bridelia micrantha (Melandean) leaves were used which were then evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) test, a method that is widely known for assessing free radical scavenging activity. The ethanol extract sample was obtained through maceration with a yield of 15.84%. Based on the DPPH test, it shows that the extract has dose-dependent inhibition of DPPH radicals, with a maximum inhibition of 66.13% at a concentration of 25 ppm. The IC50 value, calculated from regression analysis, confirmed the antioxidant potential of the extract, although it was less effective than that of vitamin C, which was used as a positive control. These findings suggest that Bridelia micrantha leaves, rich in phytochemicals such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, have the potential as a source of natural antioxidants for managing oxidative stress-related health conditions.

Abstract

The repeated use of cooking oil more than twice is still common in Indonesian society. However, used cooking oil can negatively affect health, being even more detrimental than saturated fatty acids. Additionally, it contributes to pollution in soil and water. One effective method for repurposing used cooking oil is by converting it into soap. This community service initiative aims to promote the utilization of used cooking oil in economically valuable products while reducing the amount of waste oil that is discarded into the environment. The training was conducted for PKK cadres in Bengkaung Village and facilitated by pharmacists, dermatologists, and students from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Mataram. The soap-making process begins by adding charcoal to the used cooking oil for 72 hours. This step helps remove hazardous substances and unpleasant odors. Afterward, the oil is filtered and combined with essential soap-making ingredients, including sunflower oil, virgin coconut oil (VCO), olive oil, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and water. NaOH is critical for the saponification process, which transforms the oil into soap. To enhance the aesthetic value and benefits of the soap, ingredients like honey, yogurt, or natural dyes such as butterfly pea flowers can be incorporated. The mixture is then poured into molds and allowed to harden. Given the simple process and the ease of obtaining the necessary tools and materials, the PKK cadres in Bengkaung Village have shown enthusiasm for making soap from used cooking oil. This activity is expected to broaden their knowledge and provide business opportunities to help increase family income in the village.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of a contextual Project-Based Learning model (Ethnomed-PjBL) that connects pharmacy students with traditional healers (Belian) in Lombok, Indonesia, to explore and scientifically validate ethnomedicinal formulations. Conducted in three phases field immersion, in-situ qualitative testing, and laboratory-based phytochemical analysis the model facilitated reciprocal learning and empirical inquiry grounded in Indigenous healing knowledge. Laboratory screening confirmed the presence of key secondary metabolites across all formulations, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, phenolics, and terpenoids. Among the seven formulations tested, those based on Ziziphus mauritiana (bidara) and Annona muricata (soursop) showed the highest chemical diversity and antioxidant activity, with IC₅₀ values of 61.2 µg/mL and 74.5 µg/mL, respectively. These results support the pharmacological potential of traditional remedies and align with healer-reported uses related to immune function and disease prevention. Students reported significant educational gains, including improved understanding of phytochemistry, enhanced laboratory competence, critical thinking, and greater intercultural and ethical awareness. The Ethnomed-PjBL model demonstrated the capacity to embed scientific inquiry within culturally responsive frameworks, reinforcing the relevance of Indigenous knowledge in contemporary pharmaceutical education. By promoting equitable academic–community partnerships, this model contributes to broader efforts to decolonize health education and advance pharmaceutical sovereignty. It offers a replicable framework for integrating traditional knowledge into vocational health curricula, balancing scientific rigor with cultural respect. The study underscores the importance of ethical collaboration in preserving traditional knowledge systems while cultivating future health professionals who are both scientifically competent and culturally attuned.
