Abstract

Global contemporary crises, including moral degradation, spiritual disorientation, environmental crises, and humanitarian conflicts, indicate the disconnection of modern humanity from transcendental values. In this context, the thought of Badiuzzaman Said Nursi (1877–1960) is examined as an alternative Qur’anic-based solution. This study aims to thematically analyze the relevance of Nursi’s ideas in Risalah Nur to modern global problems. The research employs a library research method with a qualitative-descriptive approach, using thematic analysis of the main texts of Risalah Nur and relevant secondary sources. The findings reveal three main points. First, the concept of rational faith in Risale-i Nur is operationalized through logical-empirical arguments that function as a foundation for strengthening spiritual awareness in confronting secularism. Second, the integration of revelation and reason is demonstrated through an epistemological framework that positions science as a means of contemplation (tafakkur), rather than as an entity opposed to religion. Third, the concepts of ukhuwah insaniyah and the ethics of tawhid generate principles of social and ecological responsibility reflected in the call to maintain harmony between humanity and nature. The contribution of this study lies in formulating a conceptual framework connecting rational faith, the integration of religion and science, and socio-ecological ethics within a thematic perspective based on Risalah Nur. This study highlights its novelty by asserting that the internalization of Qur’anic values through the rational and spiritual approach formulated by Nursi remains highly relevant for building a just civilization oriented toward balance between material and spiritual dimensions.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores al-Farabi’s educational thought and its relevance to contemporary Islamic education. Al-Farabi views education as a means to achieve human perfection (al-sa’ādah al-quṣwā) through the balanced development of rational, moral, and spiritual faculties. Employing a library research method with content analysis, this study examines primary sources such as Ara’ Ahl al-Madinah al-Fadilah and Kitab al-Tanbih ‘ala Sabil al-Sa’adah, alongside secondary literature discussing al-Farabi’s philosophical and pedagogical ideas. The findings reveal that al-Farabi emphasizes the integration of reason and virtue as the foundation of education, positioning the teacher as both a moral and intellectual guide. His concept of the “Active Intellect” (al-‘aql al-fa’āl) offers an epistemological framework that connects knowledge acquisition with spiritual elevation. These ideas remain highly relevant for modern Islamic education in addressing moral, intellectual, and spiritual challenges in the era of globalization.

Abstract

The implementation of prayer, as one of the pillars of Islam, has specific rules in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh). However, the development of modern life has posed new challenges in practicing worship, particularly in performing prayers in public spaces. This study aims to analyze the adaptation of fiqh in the context of modernity, with a focus on the performance of prayer in public places. The research method used is literature study with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The results show that fiqh provides flexibility in performing prayer in public spaces, as long as the conditions and pillars of prayer are met. The discussion covers aspects of cleanliness, the direction of the Qibla, and the focus during prayer in public places. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the importance of a dynamic understanding of fiqh to maintain the continuity of worship amidst the demands of modern life. The implications of this study indicate that: (1) Fiqh education should emphasize the flexibility of worship in public spaces; (2) Public facility managers can provide suitable prayer spaces; and (3) Technological innovations, such as Qibla direction apps, can further facilitate the performance of prayer in public spaces.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) to enhance vocational high school (SMK) students’ creativity and academic achievement in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Indonesia, and maps the enabling and constraining factors affecting its enactment. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved PAI teachers and students from three schools: SMK Taruna Bhakti Indonesia, SMK Al-Ikhlas, and SMK An-Nur Kuala Selat. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, and were thematically analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings indicate that PjBL fosters students’ creativity and learning outcomes when teachers demonstrate strong commitment and pedagogical creativity in adapting projects to each school’s context. Support from school leaders and the local community strengthens a collaborative and religious learning climate. Key challenges include limited instructional time, inadequate facilities, and gaps in teachers’ competencies; however, these constraints can be mitigated by integrating projects into school programs and leveraging local resources. Overall, the study suggests that PjBL in PAI has the potential to improve creativity, academic achievement, and the development of students’ religious and social character.

Abstract

Character education is a fundamental component of Islamic education that plays a vital role in shaping students' personalities and moral character. One of the primary sources of character values that merits scholarly examination is Qur'an Surah Luqman verse 18, as interpreted by Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar. This study aims to analyze the character education values embedded in Hamka's interpretation of Qur'an Surah Luqman verse 18 and to examine their relevance to the implementation of Islamic education in Indonesia. This research employed a qualitative approach using library research as its methodological design. Primary data were obtained from Tafsir Al-Azhar, while secondary data were collected from books, scholarly journal articles, and other relevant literature. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing using the content analysis technique. The findings indicate that Hamka interprets Qur'an Surah Luqman verse 18 as encompassing essential character values, including humility, the avoidance of arrogance, politeness in social interactions, and the cultivation of harmonious social relationships. These values are highly relevant to the objectives of Islamic education in Indonesia, as they support the development of learners who possess noble character, strong moral integrity, and the ability to embody Islamic values in their social lives.
