Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the marketing mix of native chicken (ayam kampung) eggs in Banyumas Regency, covering product, price, place, and promotion. The research was conducted in Banyumas Regency, Central Java Province, for three months in 2021. The location was purposively selected, given that Banyumas Regency is one of the centers of smallholder native-laying-chicken enterprises and that there is high demand for native chicken eggs in the former Banyumas Residency. The research method was a case study, with data collected through observation and questionnaire-guided interviews. Data sources comprised primary and secondary data. Respondents were selected through purposive sampling, totaling 32 people: 20 native chicken egg farmers and 12 egg traders. Data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the average flock size was 285 birds per farmer, with an average production of 138 eggs/day/farmer and a hen-day production (HDP) of 48.5%. Egg weight ranged from 38 to 45 g with white to brownish-cream shells. The price of native chicken eggs ranged from IDR 1,300 to IDR 1,500 per egg, depending on size and quality, which was relatively higher and more stable than that of commercial layer eggs. The distribution channels used were direct (farmer–consumer) and indirect (farmer–collector–retailer–consumer), with marketing reach extending to Banyumas Regency and surrounding areas, including Purbalingga, Cilacap, and Banjarnegara. Promotion was carried out through personal selling, word of mouth, and social media. Native chicken eggs have a special market segment, particularly health-conscious consumers and the herbal medicine (jamu) industry.

Abstract

Culled ducks, namely laying ducks whose productivity has declined around 2–2.5 years of age, are continuously available in the Purwokerto region and its surroundings, which is one of the duck farming centers in Central Java. So far, culled ducks have not been utilized optimally because their meat is tough, has a fishy off-flavor, and contains relatively high fat, resulting in low economic value. This review aims to examine the availability, quality characteristics, challenges, and strategies to increase the added value of culled duck meat in the Purwokerto region, based on a literature review of the 2010–2020 period. The review shows that the weaknesses of culled duck meat can be overcome through marination with plant proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain (pineapple), papain (papaya), and zingibain (ginger), which improve tenderness, and through the use of spices such as turmeric and ginger to reduce off-flavor. Product diversification, such as nuggets, meatballs, shredded meat (abon), and jerky (dendeng), has been shown to improve tenderness while increasing economic value. With the availability of inexpensive raw materials, the support of a duck-based culinary market in Purwokerto, and the application of simple processing technologies, culled ducks have the potential to become an alternative meat source that is nutritious, economical, and supportive of food security and the local livestock economy.

Abstract

Abstract. Supranoto, Tugiyanti E, Setianto NA. 2026. Observational characterization of Central Javanese local ducks across agroecological zones and rearing systems. Biodiversitas 27 (6): d270607. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270607. Local duck farming in Central Java spans heterogeneous agroecological zones and management systems, yet field data on phenotype, natural feed, and egg quality are limited. This observational study characterized qualitative and quantitative phenotypic traits, natural-feed (crop-content) composition, and selected egg-quality parameters of local ducks across four altitude-based zones (coastal, lowland, midland, highland) and three rearing systems (extensive grazing, intensive colony, intensive battery). Qualitative traits were scored in 300 ducks, morphometrics in 90 ducks, crop contents in 12 ducks (three per zone), and egg quality in two one-way ANOVA subsets. Brown and light-brown plumage predominated, whereas beak and shank pigmentation were consistent. Body length, neck length, and shank length were significantly larger under battery rearing (p<0.01), whereas body weight and five other traits did not differ. Because breed and farm were not modeled, these differences reflect combined genetic and management associations. On an as-fed basis, natural feed in all zones fell below commercial protein and energy specifications. Egg weight, yolk color, yolk pH, and albumen pH differed among zones, partly reflecting duck type; among systems, only albumen pH differed. These baseline findings require replicated genetic, nutritional, and production studies before management recommendations are generalized.

Abstract

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the efficacy of probiotic supplementation on growth, carcass traits, and gut health in meat-type ducks. Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a database search up to October 2023 identified 25 eligible studies. Data synthesis using random-effects models showed probiotics significantly improved productivity. Specifically, final body weight increased by a mean difference of 150 g (p < 0.001), average daily gain improved by 8% (SMD = 0.65), and feed conversion ratio decreased by 0.08 units. Carcass analysis indicated a 1.8% increase in dressing percentage and enhanced breast muscle yield. For gut health, probiotics increased villus height by 15%, reduced crypt depth, and modulated microbiota by boosting Lactobacillus spp. in contrast to suppressing E. coli and Salmonella. Subgroup analyses revealed that multi-strain formulations and dosages >10^8 CFU/g yielded superior outcomes. Despite moderate heterogeneity, sensitivity analyses confirmed these findings' robustness. In conclusion, integrating high-dose, multi-strain probiotics optimizes nutrient absorption, immune function, and growth, maximizing economic returns and physiological well-being in commercial duck farming.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the success rate of artificial insemination of Simmental and Ongole crossbreed cattle in Purwanegara and the factors that influence its success. The results of the study of the success rate of artificial insemination showed that the average value of Secvice Per Conception (S/C) Simmental was 1.394 ± 0.125 and Ongole crossbreed was 1.295 ± 0.117 both approaching 1.00 identifying that each Simmental and Ongole crossbreed cow requires 1 dose of artificial insemination before reaching pregnancy and reflects the productivity level of Simmental and Ongole crossbreed cattle. The results of the study showed that the Conception Rate (CR) value in Simmental cattle was 78% and Ongole crossbreed reached 82%, in the Ongole crossbreed cattle conception rate parameter it was slightly higher when compared to Simmental, this shows that the CR of Ongole crossbreed cattle is better than Simmental cattle. The high Non Return Rate (NRR) value is 78%, while the Ongole crossbreed cattle have a higher non return rate of 82% so that the Ongole crossbreed has a higher NRR than Simmental. The success factors of artificial insemination are the fertility rate at high fertility based on the age and BCS condition of the cattle, the efficiency of the inseminator's work, the duration of reporting until artificial insemination and the quality of nutrition, temperature, climate, weather and cattle maintenance management

Abstract

Abstract
