Abstract

This study aims to examine the fermentation method on local feed in the form of mash and pellets on the performance, carcass and intestinal organs of broiler chickens. The livestock used were 144 CP 707 broiler chickens aged 21 days. The study used a completely randomized design with a 3x2 factorial pattern, namely 3 fermented feed treatments (F0 = non-fermented, F1 = fermented with Effective Microorganisms-4 (EM4), and F2 = Local Microorganism (MOL) fermented), and 2 forms of feed (B1 = mash, B2 = Pellet), so there were 6 treatment. Each treatment was repeated 6 times and each repetition consisted of 4 chickens. Parameters measured were the performance of broiler chickens, carcasses and intestinal organs. Data were analysed by ANOVA test and continued with Duncan's test. The results showed that feeding fermented Effective Microorganisms-4 (EM4) and Local Microorganism (MOL) had a significant effect on chicken performance and final weight (P<0.01), but no significant effect on carcass weight and percentage (P>0.05). As for the intestinal organs, feeding fermented Effective Microorganisms-4 (EM4) and Local Microorganism (MOL) had no significant effect on the percentage of liver, ventricle, proventriculus and small intestine (P>0.05) and had a significant effect on the length of the small intestine (P<0.01).

Abstract

Waste management in Kupang City is still very poor. The waste will eventually reach the sea and will be degraded into microplastics. Microplastics, which are less than 5 millimetres in size, are made from plastic waste in marine waters through physical, mechanical, chemical and biological processes. This research was conducted to determine the characteristics (shape and colour) and abundance of microplastics found in digestive tract samples, and meat/muscle samples of lisong tuna (Auxis rochei) and mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis) obtained from PPI Oeba, Kupang City. Each organ was extracted using 10% KOH for 48-72 hours and microplastic characteristics were observed visually using a stereo microscope. The research results found microplastics in the digestive tract and meat of A. rochei and E. affinis. The forms found in digestive tract A. rochei include films and fragments, with transparent colours. Meanwhile in meat, fragments, films and fibres were found in red, blue, black, transparent and purple. The forms found in digestive tract E. affinis include fragments, pellets, fibers and films with blue, black, transparent and yellow colours. Meanwhile in meat, fragments and pellets were found with black and yellow colors. The abundance of microplastics detected in digestive tract A. rochei included 1.2 MP/individual, while in meat it was 0.2 MP/gr. In E. affinis it includes 0.8 MP/individual in digestive tract and in meat 0.06 MP/gr.

Abstract

Abstract

Infectious animal diseases, particularly zoonoses, pose a significant problem to the inhabitants of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province because of the high animal population, especially livestock, and the close interaction between humans, animals, and the environment. The Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang, held the Animal Disease Investigation Training Program for Veterinary Professional Education Students (PPDH) to overcome this significant challenge. This one-day workshop had been attended by 80 participants, consisting of 26 men (32.5%) and 54 women (67.5%). This training aims to improve students' understanding and skills in zoonotic disease investigation through theoretical and practical approaches. Theoretical sessions were conducted by giving presentations to provide a foundation of knowledge. At the same time, interactive approaches in the form of group discussions and field practice were designed to improve the ability to analyze and handle cases in the field. The results of this training are expected to equip participants with the ability to investigate, identify risks, and implement disease prevention and control measures. The expected implication of this activity is to improve the ability of prospective veterinarians to face the challenges of animal diseases in NTT, especially in infectious disease detection. This training provides relevant theoretical and practical experience in protecting animal and public health in the region.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is an important health problem and a threat to public health. Dogs as pets can be both spreaders and reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Based on spatial analysis, this study aims to determine the distribution pattern of multi-drug resistance (MDR) Escherichia coli found in pet dogs in Kupang City. The spatial analysis method is based on the convex hull technique, elementary analysis of disease, and the Nearest Neighbour Index (NNI). Information on antibiotic-resistant E. coli has been obtained from the laboratory analysis results, and secondary data was obtained for spatial analysis. The results of this study have shown that the distribution pattern of the incidence of MDR E. coli in the City of Kupang in 2020 is a clustered pattern with the Nearest Neighbor Index (NNI) value of 0.783,  which is higher than the NNI AMR E. coli in the City of Kupang of 0.763. The incidence of MDR E. coli that has occurred in domesticated dogs takes place with a prevalence rate of 35% in an area of 5079 Ha. These results have shown that the incidence of MDR E. coli has spread to several areas in Kupang City and is a threat to public health. It requires appropriate prevention and control measures by implementing good hygiene and sanitation in the relationship between humans and their pets.
