Abstract

The present study focuses on the mapping of emotion in "Tanpa Kemenudian" translated into "No Resolution." The research is grounded in the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM), a concept that has been supported by Wierzbicka (1999) and Goddard (1997). The natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) is defined as a minilanguage believed to correspond to the common core of all languages. This hypothesis has emerged through comprehensive cross-linguistic inquiries that have spanned over three decades. The NSM system was developed primarily as a linguistic theory aimed at identifying the "language of thought" and the shared core of the lexicon and grammar of all natural languages. The present study explores the notion of emotion, delineating its association with positive and negative phenomena. The objective of the present study is to demonstrate that emotion mapping is imperative for effective translation. This ability will assist the translator in accurately conveying the intended message from the source language to the target language. The findings reveal that the data is distributed as follows: four data points are associated with favorable outcomes, while three data points are associated with unfavorable outcomes. Each lexicon is representative of its semantic features, as determined by the NSM approach.

Abstract

Abstract

This research focus on the translation of action verbs applying the Natural Semantic Metalanguge (NSM) approach proposed by Wierzbicka (1996), in case where the source language is Indonesia and the target language is English. Meanwhile, descriptive qualitative approach was applied in which the data were analyzed by explaining descriptively in paraphrases. Initially, the action verbs were identified in both source language (SL) text and target language (TL) text. Then, the meanings of the action verbs were mapped comprehensively into English by adopting exponential mapping technique and explication. The action verbs are derived from the small collection of semantic primitive 'DO' which is categorized as the prototypical concept of ACTION; DO, HAPPEN, MOVE, PUT, and GO.

Abstract

Figurative meaning often presents challenges in translation, especially in song lyrics where meaning, emotion, and artistic expression must be conveyed simultaneously. This study examines the translation methodology for the figurative meanings in the bilingual song lyrics “Just Give Me a Reason” by Pink featuring Nate Ruess and its Indonesian version, “Berilah Aku Satu Alasan.” The objective of this research is to identify the types of figurative expressions used in the original lyrics and to analyze the translation methods applied in rendering them into Indonesian. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of figurative expressions found in the English lyrics and their corresponding translations in Indonesian. The analysis focuses on how the figurative meanings are transferred and whether the original sense is maintained. The findings reveal that several translation methods are used, including literal translation, adaptation, and paraphrasing. While some figurative expressions are preserved, others are modified to achieve naturalness and clarity in the target language. In conclusion, the translator employs flexible methods to balance meaning accuracy and lyrical acceptability.
