Abstract

This research aims to explore the ideal concept of social integration patterns based on the Quran through a thematic study of verses related to social integration. In the modern context, social integration often faces challenges such as social inequality, intergroup conflicts, and lack of tolerance. The structural functionalism theory pioneered by Talcott Parsons provides a theoretical basis regarding the importance of balance in society to achieve social order. However, the concept of social integration in Islam emphasizes principles of justice, unity, and tolerance as outlined in the Quranic verses. Verses such as those in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) and Surah Al-Maidah (5:2) teach the importance of mutual recognition among nations and tribes, as well as cooperation in righteousness and piety. The Quran also emphasizes the importance of justice (Surah An-Nisa 4:58) and the unity of the ummah (Surah Ali Imran 3:103) as the main foundations for achieving harmonious social integration. This study finds that the ideal pattern of social integration according to the Quran is based on principles of justice, unity, mutual assistance, and recognition of differences, which, if consistently applied, can address various social challenges faced today.

Abstract

Long Distance Marriage (LDM) is an increasingly common phenomenon in this era of globalization, where married couples are separated by long physical distances due to work, education, or other obligations. One of the biggest challenges that LDM couples face is maintaining emotional closeness and effective communication. This research aims to explore digital communication strategies that can be used to build and sustain emotional intimacy between husband and wife in LDM. Through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with 5 LDM couples, several key strategies were identified, such as the use of voice and video calls, text and voice messages, media sharing, and regular communication scheduling. The findings suggest that the quality of communication, including emotional depth, openness, and honesty, is critical in strengthening emotional bonds. Additionally, the consistency and frequency of communication are essential to keeping the relationship alive and dynamic. The Quran emphasizes the importance of communication based on truthfulness and sincerity, as seen in the verse: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice” (QS. Al-Ahzab: 70). This reinforces the idea that openness and honesty are fundamental to maintaining trust and emotional closeness, especially in LDM. The implications of this research highlight that by utilizing appropriate digital communication strategies and upholding the principles of openness and honesty, LDM couples can foster strong and enduring relationships, even when separated by physical distance.

Abstract

The slogan apartheid by the National Party that governs black life in South Africa caused turmoil and harsh criticism both inside and outside Africa. The establishment of The Call of Islam organization in 1984, initiated by Esack with the idea of liberation derived from his hermeneutic concept, was one of the forms of resistance. This study discusses the idea of Esack's hermeneutics in-depth and presents a form of Qur'an reading with Esack's hermeneutics in strengthening social movements. This paper uses a qualitative approach with a library research model. Primary data are taken from books by Esack related to hermeneutics and social movements. At the same time, secondary data is in the form of articles and writings related to his thoughts and social movements. The results showed that Esack's hermeneutics combined Arkoun's regression-progressive model and Fazlurrahman's double movement. Esack's hermeneutics has six interrelated interpretation keys and aims to liberate the oppressed from the ruler's tyranny. The six keys in question are Taqwa, Tawhid, Al-Nas, Al-Mustadh'afun fi Al-Ardh, Al-Adl, Al-Qisth, and Jihad. Social movements inspired by Esack's hermeneutics include the Muslim Student Association (MSA), Muslim Youth Movement (MYM), Qiblah, and The Call of Islam. The forms of resistance are anti-apartheid (jihad and shahada), racism jihad (against racism), socio-economic jihad (for development, reconstruction, and against poverty), and gender jihad.

Abstract

This study examines Guru Muhammad Bakhiet’s interpretation of women’s issues in the Qur’an, particularly related to verses that place women in a subordinate position, such as Surah an-Nisa’ verse 1 and Surah al-Baqarah verse 228. Using field research methods through participant observation and documentation of study recordings on YouTube, this study critically analyses how Guru Bakhiet conveys his interpretation in the context of digitalising local interpretation studies. The findings show that although Guru Bakhiet places women in a textually lower position than men, he also emphasises the importance of fair respect for women, especially in terms of girls’ education. His interpretation reflects a combination of classical patriarchal interpretation and progressive attitudes towards the treatment of women. In conclusion, Guru Bakhiet’s interpretation is ambivalent, combining women’s subordinate position with a call for fair treatment, reflecting the dynamics of local interpretation in the digital era. This study contributes to understanding gender interpretation in the digital realm and highlights the need for more comprehensive and contextual local interpretation studies.

Abstract

This study explores Cyberfaith, examining the intricate relationship between information technology and the religious perspectives of Muslim youth. With an emphasis on how the digital age has altered religious activities, the study offers complex insights into how information technology affects the spiritual perspectives of the next generation. The study adds to our understanding of the benefits and difficulties of incorporating technology into religious expressions by exploring the Cyberfaith phenomena. The findings emphasize the complexity of this influence and the part that religious beliefs play in influencing attitudes and actions. The development of Islamic religious narratives is greatly influenced by information technology, which questions established conventions and reframes concepts of authority and religion. The study's global reach demonstrates how Islamic expressions and societal elements are impacted in different parts of the world. Worship has changed as a result of the use of technology into religious rituals; this presents both opportunities and difficulties that need more investigation. The study highlights the significant change in Muslim youth's religious engagement in the digital age and stresses the significance of comprehending the effects on society and academia. Future studies should look at the implications for policy and education in helping Muslim teenagers utilize technology responsibly in religious contexts.

Abstract

Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani is a great Ulama (Muslim scholar) from the archipelago who managed to go worldwide because of his knowledge. As an Ulama, he dedicated his life to the odyssey of learning and taught it to others. Almost all fields of religious knowledge were mastered by him, including the science of ḥādīth. Although he is well-known as a mufassir, his expertise in the field of ḥādīth is very visible when viewed in detail in his works, especially in the books of Tanqih al-Qawl and Nashaih al-'Ibad. In this study, the writer tries to describe and analyse his credibility in the field of ḥādīth through those two books and his other works. Through qualitative steps accompanied by a historical approach involving documents written by Sheikh Nawawi and other archives, this research has managed to see the special attention given by the Ulama who took part in the Middle East in the field of ḥādīth. The first evidence is the number of ḥādīth narrations that he included in the books he wrote. Second, he studied a lot of dirāyah ḥādīth books, as can be seen in the book al-'Iqd al-Farīd min Jawāhir al-Asānīd by Sheikh Yāsīn al-Fādānī. Third, he had books containing the narration of ḥādīth, namely Tanqih al-Qawl and Nashaih al-'Ibad.

Abstract

Hermeneutics as a new methodology plays a vital role in complementing and providing methodological solutions to the legacy of conventional Islamic science, which is considered unable to solve contemporary problems. This paper aims to explain the use of Muhammad Arkoun’s hermeneutics in Hadith studies, especially regarding the issue of the punishment of hand cutting and marriage guardianship in the contemporary context. In reading the two Hadiths, Arkoun’s ideas effectively present a new perspective more relevant to the times. In this way, religion will always be appropriate to human needs throughout time and space. However, the presence of Arkoun’s hermeneutics also leads to the emergence of diverse new interpretations, so that the potential for flooding religious information will be increasingly open. This condition certainly impacts the community; they will have difficulty finding the spiritual information they expect. Secondly, hermeneutics as an effect of Western humanist thought has the potential to change the order of life from God-centred (theocentrism) to human-centred (anthropocentrism) with its intellect. This universe is God’s creation. All of his creations should be subject to the provisions given by God, not the other way round. This triggers a long debate that never ends.

Abstract

The use of cadar for women in Indonesia has always been a polemic lately, often causing negative stigma. This study describes the critical analysis of hadith on the legal status of cadar for women through the approach of the concept of religious moderation in Indonesia. The research used is library research using a qualitative approach, collecting data from research sources in the form of books (hadith books), journals and other relevant readings, then analyzed using descriptive methods. The result of this study is that the cadar is a continuation of the jilbab as a covering for the awrah of believers in the Quran al-Ahzab verse 59. According to the hadith of the Prophet narrated by Abu Daud that the aurah of a believer woman is other than the face and palm and the ability to see this part of the woman before proposing. According to the principles and indicators of religious moderation, the wearing of the cadar for women believers in Indonesia does not reflect the concept of balance in religious practices and attitudes because it does not include fashion or culture of the archipelago. The conclusion of this study is that women believers do not wear a cadar in Indonesia does not mean that they do not cover their aurat, because the cadar is also related to the local culture.
