Abstract

Indonesia, as a Muslim-majority nation founded on Pancasila, faces ongoing challenges in harmonizing Islamic values with national ideology. Tensions between religious identity and nationalism, exemplified by increasing intolerance and declining civic awareness, highlight the urgent need for integrative educational approaches. This study explores Azyumardi Azra’s perspective on the alignment between Islam wasathiyyah (moderate Islam) and Pancasila, emphasizing Islamic education as a strategic medium to cultivate both religious and national character. This research adopts a qualitative method based on library research. Primary data sources include the works of Azyumardi Azra, scholarly articles, and official documents related to Pancasila and Islamic education. Data were analyzed descriptively and thematically to construct a conceptual model for integration. The findings reveal three main insights: (1) a value integration model that aligns Islamic principles—such as justice (‘adalah), brotherhood (ukhuwah), and deliberation (shura)—with the five principles of Pancasila; (2) the use of inclusive and contextual teaching methods to foster tolerance and civic responsibility; and (3) the importance of local cultural contexts in developing educational models that are both relevant and effective. This study contributes to the discourse on Islamic education by offering a theoretical framework for integrating religious and national values. By operationalizing Azra’s ideas into curriculum development and pedagogical practices, the research proposes a transformative model applicable in both formal and non-formal education. It underscores the potential of Islamic education to promote a tolerant, pluralist, and nationalist generation in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

The implementation of performance assessment, particularly in speaking skills, presents significant challenges for teachers. Many still rely heavily on traditional paper-based tests, which may not effectively measure students' oral proficiency. This study aims to explore the types of speaking assessments used by junior high school teachers and to identify the challenges they face in applying performance-based assessments. This research employed a descriptive qualitative design, focusing on four junior high school English teachers as informants. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews, then analyzed thematically to uncover assessment practices and implementation barriers. Findings revealed that teachers primarily used three types of speaking assessments: intensive, responsive, and interactive. However, the implementation process presented several challenges. One major issue was related to the purpose of assessment, as teachers often struggled to clearly identify and align assessment tasks with specific learning objectives. Fairness also emerged as a concern, particularly in managing the wide range of student speaking abilities and ensuring that all students were evaluated equitably. Additionally, grading posed difficulties, with teachers expressing uncertainty in applying consistent and objective assessment criteria, which led to subjective and sometimes inconsistent scoring. These findings suggest a gap between the intended use of performance assessment and its practical execution. The lack of clear guidelines and assessment training contributes to inconsistencies and challenges in evaluating students’ speaking skills effectively. Performance assessment in speaking remains underutilized due to practical barriers. Professional development focusing on assessment literacy and standardized grading rubrics is recommended to support teachers in implementing fair and effective speaking assessments.

Abstract

Indonesia's national development depends on cultivating a "Golden Generation"—youth who combine intellectual prowess with strong moral character. Character education is viewed as essential to shaping ethical, responsible future leaders. This mixed-methods study investigated the role of character education in student development. Data were collected from 422 students across 30 Indonesian universities through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Findings reveal that 78% of students and 85% of educators observed notable improvements in student behavior, including enhanced discipline, empathy, and responsibility. Despite these benefits, challenges persist. Overloaded curricula, limited funding, and a shortage of trained educators were cited as key barriers to effective implementation. Furthermore, students expressed a need for character education programs that are more practical and aligned with real-world scenarios. While character education significantly contributes to personal growth and social behavior, structural issues hinder its full potential. Integrating character education into existing curricula and investing in teacher training are essential steps forward. Character education plays a vital role in shaping the Golden Generation and, by extension, Indonesia’s future leadership. To maximize its impact, educational policies must address systemic barriers and promote accessible, context-relevant character development programs

Abstract

The discourse on the concept of "Merdeka Belajar" in the education system in Indonesia is still an exciting topic for discussion. One of the topics that become a question is whether the concept of "Merdeka Belajar" is in line with the concept of education that humanizes humans from the perspective of the Qur'an. This literature study aims to reveal and describe the concept of education that humanizes humans and its relevance to the concept of 'Merdeka Belajar,' which is currently applied in the education system in Indonesia based on the perspective of the Qur'an. The data were obtained through a literature review where the procedures and steps referred to several verses in the Qur'an relevant to the topic of discussion. The verses that are the subject of study in this paper include Al-Isra: 70, al-Mujādilah: 11: Al-Nahl: 125, An-Nisa": 1, and al-Hujurat: 13. Furthermore, the verses of the Qur "an are analyzed using the thematic methods (maudhu "i) with content analysis techniques. The results conclude that education is essential for human life; it can shape people and determine their social status. Education humanizes humans by understanding each individual as a natural human being. Therefore, it was in line with the concept of "Merdeka Belajar" which gives freedom to each individual to choose education to actualize himself.

Abstract

The integration of digital modules in higher education has become increasingly vital in enhancing student engagement, collaboration, and critical thinking, especially in post-pandemic learning environments. Research Team-Based Learning (RTBL) is a collaborative pedagogy that emphasizes problem-solving, peer interaction, and research-based inquiry. This theoretical review explores the role of digital modules in supporting RTBL by synthesizing findings from 15 international open-access studies published between 2020 and 2025. Using a narrative review method guided by PRISMA procedures, studies were selected from reputable databases (e.g., DOAJ, PLOS ONE, Frontiers) based on criteria including relevance to RTBL and use of digital instructional materials. Thematic analysis identified four dominant themes: student engagement, digital literacy, instructional design, and post-pandemic implications. Findings indicate that digital modules enhance the effectiveness of RTBL by providing flexible access to learning materials, promoting active participation, and enabling peer-to-peer interaction. However, their impact is highly dependent on students’ digital literacy, the quality of instructional design, and institutional infrastructure. Poorly designed modules or limited digital skills can hinder collaborative learning outcomes. This review concludes that digital modules are not merely supplementary tools but essential enablers of RTBL success. Their implementation requires a balanced strategy that integrates pedagogical, technological, and institutional support. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts, AI-driven instructional feedback, and cross-cultural adaptations to optimize the use of digital modules in collaborative higher education settings.

Abstract

This study investigates the values of religious moderation embedded in Tunjuk Ajar Melayu by Tenas Effendy and examines their potential integration into the madrasah curriculum in Riau. Religious moderation is a central educational and sociopolitical concern in Indonesia, particularly in multicultural regions such as Riau, where local wisdom can support national values of tolerance and pluralism. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies Jorge J. E. Gracia’s hermeneutic framework to analyze cultural texts within Tunjuk Ajar Melayu. The study combines literature review and qualitative document analysis based on Altheide’s six-stage model. To enhance validity, data triangulation was conducted through in-depth interviews with cultural experts and individuals closely associated with Tenas Effendy. The findings reveal eleven core values of religious moderation reflected in Malay expressions, poetry (pantun), and moral teachings: Tawassuṭ (moderation), I’tidāl (justice), Tasāmuḥ (tolerance), Shūra (consultation), Iṣlāh (reform), Qudwah (exemplary conduct), Tawāzun (balance), Musāwah (equality), Aulawiyah (prioritization), Taṭawwur wa Ibtikār (innovation), and Taḥaḍur/Ta’addub (civility). These values align with Islamic principles and the goals of Indonesia’s Merdeka curriculum, particularly through the local content subject Budaya Melayu Riau (BMR). The study concludes that integrating Tunjuk Ajar Melayu into religious education can reinforce moderate Islamic character and support culturally grounded curriculum development in madrasahs across Riau.
